It is evident that the Republicans
of North Carolina have no confi
dence in their ability to defeat
the Democracy in a fair and open
encounter. For a time tbe delu
sive phantoms of II ope charmed
them with visions of a Third Party
careering wildly in the old North
State, but the delusion is past, and
they now cast a last lingering look
at the Alliance, in the dreamy an
ticipation that something may turn
up to their advantage. To them
the prospect Is a dismal one, for
whether the Alliance captures the
Democratic party, or the party con
trols the Alliance, the llepuhlicans
are not in it.
The miserable attempt to get up
'a rumpus'' between the Democrats
and Alliance men has proven a

man will be discounted because he
is a member of the order or given
special consideration on account of
such membership. The watchword
will be, "Are you a Democrat!, "
and the reply must be, "I am." In
this inalienable and indissoluble
union is our strength.
There can be no objection to the
nomination of Democrats who are
members of the Alliance. Just
here our minds naturally turn to
George W. Sanderlin. He is a
member of the Alliancs, and every
where he is the acknowledged
champion of Democracy.
We are all Democrats. Some
are Alliance men, others are not,

the Democratic flag for the rescue
of our people from oppressive bur
dens to grevious to be borne.

FXTKA YAGANCE, ECONOMY AM)
PARSIMONY.
The efforts of the Democrats in
Congress to escape the dangerous
shoals of Extravagance seems
about to strand them on the cheer
less shores of Parsimony.
True wisdom lies, between the
two, in the recognition and em
ployment of genuine Economy.
Snch a storm of opprobrium fol
io wed the Billion Congress as to
render its successor, the
present
Congress, not only cautiotrs but
absolutely timed. This is unfortu
nate. Caution ia a virtue: timidity
a weakness.
We are led to these remarks by
the announcement that Mr. Holman
and his friends have intimated that
nnless a 20 uer cent, redaction is
made all along the line all bills'
will be opposed on the Moor."
Mr. Holman is chairman of the
Appropriations Committee, a posi

There is no Statesmanship in
demanding a uniform cut of -'0 per
cent, on appropriations. xVll bills ;
are not alike meritorious. Some j
deserve no consideration, while
others are entitled to all the assist
ance that the Congress can give.
There is no truer Democrat in Con

Alabama. He is at once a states

the military. He asserts that the

There are many cu :h c ises, but
that which most seriously affects
us in this section is the threatened
reduction of appropriations for riv

for public buildings. i
The work that was done ou onr
waterways under the direction ol 1
the lamented liansom has been of i
great benefit, and it should be con-;
tinued by his- successor. For a
time the South had no part in
Congressional appropriations, but
