Next V ,",'- The First Ovation to the President. Twenty-five hundred people grv. it .1 Hon. Adlai E. Stevenson at Ashcviiie Thursday. He was escorted fro:!, his hotel by distinguished citien- the State in fifty carriages and a long line of three hundred mounted m n from the country adjacent to Ashcviiie. IT -; 1 T. Kawl -. President of tic Club, into ducedhim as "a grandson of North Cnr linn." Gen. Stevenson began by paying a tribute to North Carolina, saying that her history antl traditions were as dear to him as to any one present. He contrasted Cleveland's administration with the pres ent, spoke of the tariff and force bill, and reviewed the era of reconstruction in the Southern States. He urged the people to decide the issues made by the two parties ..ml not to waste their energies on any Third Party. He -was cheered to the echo. After (Jen. Stevenson finished, his friend (leu. Ewing, of Illinois, madi a capital speech that was a line of cloipient lan guage and fine thought, and full of admi rable points. Mr. Stevenson shook hand- with Un people after the speech. Mr- ,-t, Vinson accompanied the party. Yesterday Gen. Stevenson .-poke in Raleigh to a large and enthusiastic crowd. Next Thursday In will I in Goldsboro. Ut liirning Home. As the tlay of election approaches, and the campaign work progresses, the num ber of those who were for a time misled by the representations of the Third party, but who now see their mistake increases with rapidity. At the rate the good old honest voters of the Democratic party have been rushing back to the fold lately the 'Third party will soon be a thing of the past in North Carolina. Major W. II. Melone, of Ashcviiie leader of the Third party in the West, has declined the nomination for Judge and will vote the Democratic ticket. I To says the Republicans deceived the Third party and the division-of the wdiitcs wall result in Republican ascendancy. Jno. A Bennett, nominee for Coroner of -Martin county, withdraws from the Third Party, saying: ''While I am heartily in favor of reform, I have become thoroughly convinced it can come only through the success ot the Democratic party. Mr. C. W. Bell, secretary of the county convention at Beaufort also withdraws. Ife became disgusted even before the convention was over. All jt needs is to let the patriotic voters have a clear conception of the situation, of the danger that menaces through elivision, and the glorious victory' with the beneficent results that assured by presenting a united front aud all will be well on the 8th of Noxember. A Cyclone at Durham. The Durham Sun tells of a terrific cyclone that visited Durham county Tues day night. It was preceded by a very black cloud. It started four miles west of Chapel Hill and passed Durham two and a half miles west of the town. It lasted about five minutes, with a terrible roaring sound which frightened some nearly out of their wits. The cyclone cut a track through the county from 150 to 400 yards wide, in some places wider than others. It tore up fruit trees by the roots anil twisted oil trees in the woods as large as a man's body, leaving only the shattered trunks or stumps to show where they once stootl, and cotton and corn were lust wiped oil' the face of the earth. It blew down outhouses antl residences in its path and there were several very narrow escapes. One man was caught under the falling timbers ot his house and injured. Nothing like it has ever occurred before in that part of the country. Drinking Water. Ou the question of good, wholesome water, a prominent engineer- has the following to say in the Richmond Dispatch: 'This summer has been one in which an unusual number of complaints have been made in various towns and cities about their water supply. People are beginning to recognize the fact that sur face water, no matter how pure it may look, is not healthy, and in consequence many Artesian wells are being sunk. Water from long distances under ground has everything in its favor so far as purity ami healthiness are concerned, and should be the only kind used for drinking purposes." The artesian well seems to be the only means of solving "the drinking water problem for cities. Lost on Frying-Pan Shoals. The Signal Service observer at South port, ('apt. Dosher, telegraphed last evening to the station ia Wilmington as li 1 lows: "The British barque Casket, 330 tons, ('apt. Tozer, from Huelva, Spain, bound to Wilmington, N.
