Letters are now being received from owners of racing horses at vanous points in reference to entering them for onr fair Several are expected shortly to go through a training course for the contests. One is already here and been practicing for a couple of weeks. This is Alamance Chief, belonging to Mr. Curry Walker, of Hickory. He is a fine animal. His sire is the famed Melvin Chief. The $2000 that will be given in pre miums this year is enough to spur the sporting men up to extraordinary efforts. If you want to see the best races you have ev-;r seen, come to the New Berne, Fair and watch the races that will take place. The Fair will be held the entire week beginning February 20tb. The table of distances between Norfolk and Catharine Lake, Onslow county, by projected locations of the Norfolk, Wil mington "& Charleston railrotd as given in Chief Engineer Runk's report is: From Norfolk by Suffolk, Winton, Windsor, Speller's Ferry, Pactolus, Dover and Com fort to Catharine Lake, 168.7 miles; by Wallace town, Lillys, Coleraine, Windsor, Cedar Landing, Washington and New Berne to Catharine Lake, 172.72 miles; by Suffolk, Winton, Windsor, Cedar Landing, AVashington, Chocowinity and New Berne, 179.85 miles. ESTIMATED COST OP COMPLETED RAILROAD The country between Norfolk and Charleston is remarkably level, and of such a character that a good and practi cable railroad can be built and operated at a cost much below the average. The bridge and trestling will not ex ceed forty thousand (40,000) feet. Estimated cost of construc tion between Norfolk and Charleston Harbor by the survey now made, Cost of construction per mile, $11,101. Cost of the following re quired equipment, $3,041,109 712,600 Cost of construction and equipment, To which should be added expenses of organization, surveys, and obtaining right of way, estimated, $4,653,709 114,000 Total cost of completed and equipped railroad. The Railroad Company have had in ducements extended them by way of county and town subscriptions which have received consideration to deflect from the general surveyed route and locate tbe railroad through the cities of W: shington and New Berne, N.
