We give this morning specimens of the wmst things siid against him ami also his last card, tin- third one he has written on the snh iect. Below are the letter extracts: office of Lyon & Lyon, Le.it Tol.aeco Dialers. OxKoitn, N. C, Aug. 17th. 18113. I send you a8 requested, the circular sent me when 1 applied to join the parly. I read it ami about the hrst ot June sent my ten dollars. Ahout the 12tli ot July. I received Circular No. 3, but the time according to contract, had elupsed for nic to withdraw my $10. and iu fact, he states in this circular that it hid been ij plitd to hotel accommodations in Chica go: so I had to stick or lose my 10. Now the funny part is, when we reached Chicago we were informed, upon inquiry that the $10 had not been paid :is pub lished in Circular No. 3. After some slmrn lft tcrs from me- Mr. Hnrrell 1ms sent me a check for 9 to pav all neces- i sary expenses (except ticket; as promised. ! Mr. Devin, of thia place received only ! $7 to pay same. Mr. T. L. Cannady, of. this conuty received only $7 to pay same. Uue lady on trie train tola me sue re ceived $7.20, another $9, another $10 and another $8.49. Prof. . of told me Harrell promised to send him $13. Prof. is at the head of a high told me she re-, school and is a man of some prominence, i So you see, on the basis of $39 paid to I Mr. Harrell, the ticket costing $21. 90"! tl.o Rnlpi.rh OAClfl ti.. lia.l in lite nurl-pl I i V , r r I $ ll.tu oi eacu one s money, ne returns in one case $13, leaving $4 10; in the other cases he retains 8. 10, 9.10 and $10.10, mostly the latter. Average something over $8 on each- He had in his party of the duped ones about ?50 people, so you see he pocketed something over $2,000, and yet in yesteiday's News and Obser ver he tries to make the public believe that he ?ot only $1.10. Shall such a man go on duping and defrauding the poor teachers of N. C, and nobody raise a warning voice? 'y. V. Lyon. Upon the party's arrival at our regis tering book, they one and all, notified us not to hold them responsible for their board. Naturally we wanted some ar rangements made by some one and were addressed by a spokesman of this party to send lor their conductor, which we did. Mr. Harrell came from the Alhani bra and said he would be responsible. On the next day, hearing from th" party that Mr. Harrell had already been paid by them in advance; we wanted r. Har rell to make us a payment, so sent again for him He made offer of a check that would necessitate onr giving in exchange nearly $300.00 in cash, thus wanting to collect his check in the face of the panic about banks. We waived the matter fur that day. He took the check back to the Alhambra Hotel, where, upon our next venture to get settlement, we found check had been put up in security for settle ment there instead of beiag at once sent on through the banks for collection. Alter this ending of check we informed our cuests we should prefer and be obliged to look to them to pay their bills, which they promptly settled with many regrets that we had been to so much trouble in the matter. Mr. Harrell settled for the last three days. The proposition that Mr. Harrell states he made, to trust us for balance in check, is an unmitigated falsehood which we stand ready to prove with all others he has made to cover his position and lessen the dissatisfaction of his excursion people towards him. His endeavar to throw the blame upoD the Hotel is very dishonorable. Yours Respectfully, Chopper, Tcckeb & Yocuo, Proprietors Southern Hotel. The editorial of the Goldsboro Head light on the affair on which it is stated Mr. Harrell intends to institute suit for libel reads as follows: That genteel fraud Eugene G. Harrell, the tin-soldier major, is now refunding his ill-gottea gain, made to do so by severe newspaper denunciation. The fact is that Harrell sees prison bars star ing him in the face, like any other criminal, is now returning the stolen goods. In the face of the evidence i'ainst linn can the North Carolina Teachers' Assembly allow such a fraud to act as its secretary? He should be bounced at once. Mr. Hurrells card will be found ou the the fourth page. George Smithson. Dr. Talmage says: ''When Christ looks down from heaven on a burial where there are six in attendence, he remembers there are two more than were present at his obsequies " True, but one of them was an honorable counsellor, and secretly a dis ciple, and another a member of the high civil and ecclesiastical court no doubt converted through the influences set in operation when he "came to Jesus by night." And the other two were the gentle and loving Marys, whose tender and deep devotion caused them to linger latest at the cross, and hasten earliest to the sepulcher. So he was among kindred spirits, and "with the rich in his death." But ii was a lonely and sad burial, of him whose name is at the head oi this article, at the Cedar Grove Cemetery Wednesday morning- Ho was far awiy from his home at Elizabeth City when death came. The physicians certificate stated that "George Smithson died ot malarial fever at Jacksonville. N. C, Aug. 28th, 1893," only that and nothing more. The body was on the way to his home for interment, when, on account of failure to make connection, aud unavoida ble delay, it was rendered r.ecessary to make the hurial here. Only strangers were at the obsequies. No one who knew him by face or had ever taken him by the hanil was present to give him back to earth. But kindly hands hal lowed his narrow bed and smoothed down his lonely pillow and the last offices of respect to dead humanity, were hal lowed bv the sacred rites of a ho'v re ligion. The rector of the Episcopal j church read over him its burial service, and in a suitable place in this quiet city of the dead he will await the further re- quisition of friends, or the trump of the resurrection.
