He is . the youngest college President in America Mr. Thie. Burma, son in-law of our townsman Mr. W. P. Burrus, is moving np from bis old home in Hvde County - " ami is now at Mr. Burrus". Those wr-.o have neut o:i.e time in , Wilmington lately say they hear plenty of talk there about coming to the East Carolina Fair. Wilmington visitors will no doobt be here every day of the Fair, aad when the Naval Reserves come over "they will do doubt bring a big crowd with them. We see at Mr. J. J."Tolsons a supply of North Carolina pecans for sale. They came from Jones county. There is no reason why every Jfarm should not have a supply of those trees. They are very profitable, and are also beautiful and use. ful as shade trees when wanted for that ' pnpose. Embark in pecan culture. Now - is the planting time. '- Hon. Kope Elias, olordiiiatin'' his interest to those of the paity has with drawn t-i tho contest for the office of Collector of Internal Reverrne 1or the Western District. The nomination of his successor Mr. Mellviile E. Carter will be sent in with the earliest batch of nom inations says the Charlotte Observer special. - That Broad St should he shelled or . gnarled and put in ss gixxl condition as '- the bosiness portion of Middle. Broad and Pollock, meets with much favor among a number ot our citizens. It would be a big earing on ttam3 and much quicker time could be made than the present . plodding through heavy sand. Sosue of the Naval officials are getting into hot water. They are cbarged with Baring been in collusion with war-ship builders, where high speed boats have been contracted for. The immense tonu ses recently obtained led to the unearth aof the fraudulent scheme. On cruiser .JKMympia? there was a premium of near ly half a million dollars. As indicated heretofore Mr 5. IT. Carroll of Raleigh lor marshal of the eastern district and Elijah W. Ra wis for postmaster at Tarbom A special to the Charlotte Observer gives the above facts. , Mr. D. T. Costen, with a little assist ance from his father, Mr. J. D Costen is putting up a good residence to cost 'about $1500, a short distance from the .site of his old home near White Oak 'station. Mr. R. H. Mills has recently completed one at Wbiteoak crossing and nie uncle Mr. J. T. Henderson is now building one for himself at the same crossing. Such evalenee of thrift in the community is pleasing. Afte r consult ing Secretary Carlisle Representative Urady concurred. Capt. Matt Manly is here. He will be nominated for pstmster a'. New Heine i.-oiit the 8th inst, when Clark's ter n expire-. The u' ve items are taken l mm a special in Saturday's Charlotte Observer, a paper very accurnte in the news from the capitol. Mr. Lane had previously received a telegram gVvmg hiai the as surance ot his appointment. The Obs. rve gives in addition the appointment of Mr Man! v. Both tho gentlemen are well ipialiticd to fill the position to which they have Ix-en chosen. Mr Manly has had tour years of previous experience in the p -t-mastership, gave perfect satisfaction while there and this is guarantee enough that it will be so again. Mr. Lane has held the position of City Cierk and tax collector and fulfilled the duties expeditiously and well. He is a man that puts his w hole soul into what he undertakes and he ren fered good ce-r- . vice in the last campaign. The aflairs ot both offices are in good hands. To Improve Her Streets. ; Our neighbor city, Beaufort, is doing j the right thing in its move to have the j principal street there leading out to the . . l.i e.-uin'rv - he cel. A r.eirer mme cou.u -car. . I be i-ride. N-t "ely -lieiiid a!! the business streets any to.vn or city in substantial and easy of traffic, but it is of the gieateat importance to have the main thoroughfare leading out into the country made first-class. To have better streets New Berne knows what that is. ' i'y go Lack eight or ten years ago and reflect. Then al'er anv hart rain or continued sluwers. the streets would In; so badlv ctit u that vehicles would almost mire to the ax'e and not more than a h alt or third 1 a 1 couhl be hauled by drays. Now tiner streeis cm be toun i. 1 uey are harel. S'nonth. and well drained, and , are a pleasure to drive upon. As to their I substautiability two winters have been amply sufficient to test them. The next move in this I'.ne would give still greater benefits if Broad St., coul.l be shelled or marled to the corporate limits and from there Craven county should c on - tinue it at least a few miles till the heavy sand is gotten through. Only al out two miles would be required to construct till good hard roads would be reached. What says ew Bernef nat says Craven county? The Xew Methodist I'astor. Rev. J. T. Lvon, thj new pastor of Centenary M. E. Church, is no w comfort ably installed in the parsonage. After conference he went wi th his fam ily to visit relatives in Wilmington, and they cane over to New Berne Thursday night. Mr. T. A. Green who had leen attending the Grand Masonic Lodge, ac companied "them Irorn Wilmington to New Berne. At the depot u committee met and escorted them to their home, wher msny ot the congregation were waiting to welcome them. Everything had been made cheerful A good supper was all in reaeliness for them. Mr. Lyon's family consists of his wife nm I six children, a 1 1 hovs except the youngest one. The thre'C older ones ate away at school the others are with him. Looting to Starting the Cannery. Mr. Chas. VaDLear. a memtwr of the firm of Greenabautn Bros . cannt rs, is in the ciy considering the advisability of starting their cannery in this city for the season. We hope he will finel i to their interest to do so. Oysters are very tine thi3 year and cheap anel would nt' doubt be supplieel m abundance. The operating of the canning factories makes money easier for several classes of our people. It gives those who catch the oysters a ready sale for them and gives plenty to do to some oyster beats that run backward and forward buying Irom the catche r's and selling to the factory, besides the employcmeut it furnishes to the operatives in the factoiv. All this keps money in circulation, enlivens trade aud lends to make Ixrtter times generally. To Become a Xew York Commission Merchant. Mr. C. L. Dickinson of Beaufort passed thrOGgh en route to New- York Tuesday. Mr. Dickinson goes to engage in the com mission business. He aims primarily fjr fish, oyster auel clam shipments, but will pay due attention to truck in its season. Mr. Dickinson "has had tn years ex perience as a buyer and shipper ot fish and shell-fish anel the experience gained will no doubt stand him in good -tead. His son, Mr. C. C. Dickinson will buy for him at Wrightf viile and he. has a good prospect of patronage trom ship pers at and near his home. 119 barrels of clams were shipped to him yestcrelay as a starter. We hope he will me'et with bountiful success. A Sadden Death. Mrs. Mary L. Mabbitt died sucldenly Sunday nigh; at the residence of her son in-law. Mr. E W. Sms'dwood. aged 70 Vi afs.
