Meanwhile, thia leader sat upon tbe hotel ver aadafc, across the way, hobnobbing with his officers over wine captured from the late editor's cellar. Gen eral Sherman's order, its execution . thus supervised, was 4 earned out by - Corps commander General How grand it is" to have joar fellow-man approaoh you, not only with civility, out that true cour tesy and gentility also that is char acteristic of a cheerful and amia ble dirpoeition. Civility is a fortune in itself, for courteous man often succeeds in life, -ad "; that ,en when peraong of ability faiL In being introduced to stranger, his affability; or the rever, creates instantaneonsly, a proposition .in his favor, or awakens unconscious Iy a prejudice against him. To men, civility is, in fact, what a pleasing appearance is to womeo it is a general passport to Urar2-t- letter of recommendation written in a language that every person under stands the best of men have often injured themselves by irritably and abasement rudeness; whereas, men cl inferior .abilities have frequently sac -ceded by their : agreeable - and pleasing manners.' -T Of wo , men eqaal in all other respects, the cour teous one has tice tbe advantage, and by far the, better opportunity for making his way in the world. Chemically, itae apple is com posed of vegetable fiber, albumen, o gar, gum. chlorophyl, malic aeid Z"lo acid, lime, and much water. I'arthermora, sajs the bouthern C.inlie, the German ' analysts says the apple contaias a. larger .per- ceatag&'of phosphorus than any phorus is admirably adapted for re newing the essential nervosa mat tar, lecithin, of tbe brain and -: spi sal cord. It is, perhaps,' for the earns reason, rudely, understood that old Scandinavian V traditions represent the apple tbe food . of the eodiy who, when they felt' themsel ves to be growing feeble and infirm resorted to this frnit for renewing tbe r powers of mind aad boly A I -to, the acids of the apple are of :aal use for men of sedentary habits, whose livers are sluggish in actionthose acids serving to elim inate from the body noxious 'mat ter, which if retained, would make the brain heavy and doll, or bring about jaundice or. skin eruptions and other allied troubles. Somestfch aa experience must have led to our castora of taking apple sauoe with roast pork, rich " goose,.' and like nes. The malic acid of ripe ap- l '.as, either raw or cooked, will neu tralie any excess of chalky matter t: gendered by eating too much ce.it. It Is also the fact that socb - fresh fruits as the apple, the pear, and the plumi J when taken ripe and without sugsr, diminish acidity iu tbe stomach, rather than provoke it. Their vegetable sauces and jui ces are converted inW alkaline car bonates, which tend to counteract acidity. STA5D CP FOR TOTJS TO TJX We commend the following from a sensible exchange to our people; "This paper believes that every sil ver dollar that iakept circulating borne is -werth " several times its ballion value,' and that a strong borne pride le one of tho greatest levers to be . fonnd anywhere for keeping a. community out of tbe ditch -of financial despair and fallnre.; , . ,-r---v; - Say a home. Col. J.. Hampton FIogH renounces the Democratic party and joins tbe Republicans. la bii tirade agaiast tho Democ racy he says ''Thera is bat one par ty and half tn existence in the United States tbe Republican party and the ragged ede of mng wumpery, composed of Mr. (Jleve- LUnd in front, Walter Q. Gresham in the middle and VVayue Mc. Veigh holding .the tail. The man that can swallow that kind of a po litical conglomeration, that is with out a principle, without a policy, they polling in one direction, tbe so called Democratic Congress pull ing in the opposite direction, while every financial, pecuniary and in dustrial interest of the country is being pulled to pieces, tbe country upon the verge of bankruptcy and the people destitute and on tbe point of starvation, can remain in the Demecratio party' Col. J. Hampton Hoge may be an honest man, but it will be very difficult for him to make the conn- try beleve that he has given the true' reasons that induced him to leave the Democratic party and become a Republican. 4. few months ago he was (indor sed by Virginians as a "true bine Democrat,'' and at their solicita tion he was appointed consul to Amoy China. He received his ap pointment from the Bame apostles of. mugwumpery, Clevelaod and Gresham. whom he now denoun ces; but before getting off from this land of the free and home of the brave for the Celestial Empire, certain irregularities of life and blemishes of character became known to the President and the appointment was withdrawn. Every man who baa seeu his bud of oramise suddenly wither, as if smitten by an untimely frost, will sympathize with OoL Hoge, while at the same time tho country will sustain the President and bis Secretary in re calling tbe appointment of the high mettled Virginian. It is fortunate that the Democratic party can sur vive the withdrawal from its ranks of men who ore for the loaves of office to sound political princi pies. The assertion that tbe Demo cratic party is the "rugged edge of mugwumperr composed of Mr Cleveland iu front, Walter Q. Gresham in the middle and Wayne McVeigh holding the tail," is not true. Without admitting the charge of "mogwmnpery," we take occasion to observe that however great these distinguished men may be, or how ever honorable the noeitions thv hold. ' thev are no more the Democratic party pie who regard the Constitution as tbe corner stone of their politi cal edifice, and the Chicago plat form aa their party creed. - The Democratic party of today is not recreant to it sacred trusts, The evil that afflict the country are not of Democratic origin. They are tbe direct result of Republican rule, aad whatever hinderance there is to their removal oomes from the Republican party. Without stopping to consider how far present officials have wan dered from Democratic stanuirds, we content ourselves' with the broad declaration that tbe Demo- cratio party does not owe alle glance to leaders, but, on the con trary, leaders owe allegiance 'o the party. Leaders may be changed, but principles are en tern al. DISRUPTED, BUT SOT DESTROYED. Those who fancy that the Dem ocratic party has been or can be destroyedhave read history to lit tle purpose. It is eaid that "matter cannot be destroyed," how then can it be supposed that principles essential to the life of b a tions and intimately associated with human happiaess can .be eradicated and pass into tho limbo of forgetfulnessf Not a grain of sand baa been lost, not a thought has perished since the morning stars , first sang together in harmonious numbers. What if recent State and muni cipal elections have been averse to the Democratic party! There are but incidents ot republican govern ment and free elections. The multi tude, like the sea, is always rest less, bat both are obedient to law. Calm succeeds storm, and the world moves on directed by omnip otent power. Let those who are predicting that the Democratic party will never re gain its ascendency remember the many overwhelming defeats it has sustained in tbe past, and how soon tberealter it was triumphantly vic torious. Who can ever forget tbe war be tween the States and the recon struction period that followed it, the time of darkness and dismay, when it was accounted treason to be a DamocratT Yet the spirit of liberty survived, and, when the storm of passion bad passed, tbe people arose in tbe majesty of fi'ee men and shook Republican bondage from them like dew drops from a lions mane. This .reaction, this marvelous evolution, was not be cause of renewed hostility to the Union, bet it was tho spontaneous outburst of popular sentiment re sponsive o the spirit of American Democracy and expressive of ven eration for the Government as es tablished by the fathers of the Re public The Democratic party had the mislor uue to come Hit imriT, :i year a-i, whe -i there grr- it dprt--ion iu nvr brm c i bu- ofxH, but Democratic r i '. The K--;iiblican8 came into power aud nq'i.uidered the njouey handed over to them by the Dtmocratic Admioistration. In their extremity, and with a reckless dirsegard of the snffer- ingsofthe masses, they phased the McKinley bill. That oppress lve measure, the orolifio source of evil, is still in full forcft and effect; but, thanks to the Democratic party, its days are numbered, and in a little while the people will be in the possession of the blessings that are sure to follow the adaption of tbe bill new before the senate. The Wilson bill is not all that we would have it, but it is a ctep forward, and its acciptance evinces a conviction that this country oaunot be prop erly governed without the appli cation of the long tried, safe, brad measured principles held by the Democrntic party, Without them the Union could never had been established never have ben established. The coun try o ves everything to the princi ples held and maintained by tbe Democracy They are immntabfe, indestractible and eternal. ON TO WASHINGTON Those of our readers who were actors in the stirring days of 61" remember bow often the words "on to Washin.tou," were heard in oamp. on tbe march and around bivouac fires. Well, that on to Washington did not torn out to b a success. There ere impediments in tbe way, and the "On to Richmoud,' that came from a different quarter, was the herald of victory. There was another on to Wash ington, when Mr. Cleveland be came President, and it was taken for granted that tbe "rascals" would be turned out and all the high places in tbe Democratic syn agogue be given to the political de scendants of Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson. This On to Washington" was about as suc cessful as the other, True a few brave fellows made the trip, bnt the question may be raised as to whether they are victors or pris oners of war. Bat ic was not of these that we werethiuking when we wrote, as the caption of this article, On to Washington. The Federal Capital is about to be invaded from the West. A mighty host is to go up, and, in sion, demand the recognition of their rights and the restoration of peace, plenty .and happiness. To be more precise; many thous ands of people from California to Ohio, are thinking of maching on Washington with tbe view of pre senting to Congress and tbe Presi dent certain alleged popular griev ances. There is no mistaking the fact that the persons concerned in this crusade are very much in ear nest, but, like everything that has a Populistio origin, is impracticable and utterly senseless. The crusaders have nothing new to say to Congress. They do not know how they are to get to tbe national city. The leader, Coxley by name, is an Ohio man, and he began with the notion of marching through Pennsylvania, subsis ting on the farmers. "His idea is to ride a fat horse up to the steps of the Capitol and demand the is sue of $500,000,000 of non-interest- bearing bonds. Tbe plan is to raise by speading abroad expectancy that there will be a distribation of bonds," and with bands and ban ners, but without arms, march on feasting on the fat of the laud and fearing no eril. Of course this is a huge craze Coxley may start with a few hun dred deluded followers, bat he will never get through Pennsyl vania, if he attempts to forage on the farmers as he goes. They could drive him back with their hoes and pitchforks, bo' it wonld be an in vasion which tbe Governor wonld be compelled to resist with the mil itary power of the State. Of all tbe Ons to Washington this is the most sense Jess and hope less. Who Emptied the Treasury! Figures that Tell lht Story. A correspondent Bends a catting from a contemporary, in which the 'cash in the Treasury" at tbe be ginning of the Harrison adminis tration is compared with tbe "cash in the Treasury at the end of that administration" no mention be ing made of liabilities with i eMilt, according to the editor, that was "nearly $10,000,000 more cab iu the Treasury when President Har rison left office tloin when he ent.-i- ed."
