Beats have been catching hogs badly ' near Pollokaville lately and young men of that neighborhood plan to have a big bear hunt at an early day with a view both to lessening the annoyance and having some exciting sport at the same time. The foun dation of the monument was finished -SUurday. Messrs. Nunn Jt McSorley hav.. had a door cut on Pollock street for an en trance to tbe ice cream department ot ; their store. This will le quite a con venience to the patrons of their establish iment. especially tfce ladies and their es corta. The young men have fixed np .tbeir ice cream parlor quite attractively. A freight train was wrecked in a queer i manner in Raleigh Friday. The train was coming to tbe city down a grade and when near the penitentiary it became un- coupled and seperated into two sections. The engineer not knowing this kept on at -.a rapid rate and slowed up as he got in to tbe city. Then tbe other section came -on swiftly down tbe heavy grade and crashed into tbe rear of the forward one. The result was that four cars were de railed and badly damaged but fortunately no one hurt. A correspondent in this isroe takes to task those persons that go to church and take tbe end seats nearest the aisles. It is an ugly practice and is probably com mitted la all churches. It is verv em barrassing to people who have to crowd bj these inconsiderate persons, ami also to usher who are often held responsible for not properly arranging the early com ers. It is a bad hahit and should be abandoned. Haaarc ta a Mew B-srne Bay. Mr. Chas. A. Scott, the fifteen year old sou of oar townsman Mr. S. II. The contest was open to all the tul--ests of the college and fifteen tried -to achieve the honors. ADVERTISEMENTS I. EVS What I Adrertising aud What U News The Way to Determine About Items that are on the Dirldln? Line. We have recently received criticisms to the effect that in divine mention ot' i.i- them free the U-st kind of advertisement they could have, to the disadvantage of home physicians just as skillful and j North Carolina institutions ot like clur- aeter just as thorou2b.lv equipped though not on as Urge a M-ale as those in greater centers ot population. We have this to say: In many cases like those spoken of the parties hive wide cin les of Iriends, good subscrilers to the piper, who arc anxious to know how their afflicted ones fire fiiiring. and in no way can they all obtain the information so readily as by the newspaper statement, and to keep back the news when we have it would not even be justice to them. Every one knows that the Journal is a home paper and w orks as btrongly lor home as it is possible for a paier to do under tbe circumstances, but it should be at the same time a neit paper and while we admit that such mention is a line ad vertisement for tbe institution receivimz it we wid never withhold items which con tain genuine news for fear that some in dividual firm, institution or organization. al m;i 1 nr at home, will n-ceive tu-nerit 1 1 1 1 r w h k h it 1 1 1 n 't iuv Tiit- p -i n t i that the matter, though it really is of private interest and calculated to do private benefit, U also of public interest and for the public benefit It is indeed a difficult matter some- 'mies to correctly discriminate between what is Dews and what is ndvertisin journalist has to use his judgment in the matter and he cannot injustice to either himself or patrons hold back news items in his possession even should there be a private benefit thereby But there is another phase of the mat ter: If the matter in question is one in which only those who receive the benefit are interested it is then purely -an adver tisement, no matter how large the num ber interested may lx, aud even where it is a matter in which tbe public, or a large portion of it is interested, the mo ment the news part is exhausted every thing that follow, whether a lengthening of the article in the same issue or subse quent references, (unless something new develops) is advertisement, pure and simple, and leloDgs to be dealt with ac cordingly. Pat Out the Fire Themselres- Tbe dry-kiln of Ch&ttoka mills, those of D. Congdon & Co., were discovered to be on tire yesterday afternoon about 2 o'clock, around one of the ventilators. The Qremen were quickly on the scene, but the tire had been extinguished before they arrived by tlie mill men with their appliances for the purpose. Connection was maiie with a hydrant and a little water was thrown by tlie firemen but it was no showing of ac tual work. As l lie wind wis carrying whatever sparks might have couie from the milNn an opposite direction from the drvkiln, the fire is snpiiose.l to have caught by sparks from a passing locomotive. The excellency of Capt. C'ongdon-'s ar rangements for extinguishing tire was highly complimented on account of die work done yesterday, the tire at first was supposed to be inside the kiln, and steam which would quickly have extinguised it there was at once turned into tlie kiln by a large steam pipe direct from the boiler, a length of hose was soon attached to tlie pumps and in a little over a minute one stream of water was on the tire and then two of them, being 1 J inch ones, were being thrown upon it inside of three minutes, with the result tliat it was soon out. A gentleman who tells us that he has been all over the country and been in the largestjnills north 'ind south, but lias never seen any ether so fully equipped for fighting tire :n this one. The mill it Self can in a few minutes apply wat r on any that occurs There are two pumps each of which c-in throw two streams, and CtHl feet of hose besides the automate sprinkler, an elevated tank from which the tifih stream caw be taken but which is rlesingi ed pn marily for extinguishing tires by us own action; pipes extend from it thr..n:h Hie mill", and at intervals, theie epc.iings which have been clos-l with a-iiv n eli ing metal which, should a tire start, would melt towards the tire and spray it with all the water then standing in the tank. The Free Will Hiptlst Cbureh During the series of meetings just hel l in the Free Will Baptist church the building was tilled nightly to its utmost capacity even to the spice in the aisle le iog occupied, and as a rule there would still be quite a numler an.u.id the door unable to gair admission. This condition of affairs shows the wis Jom of that denomination In erecting thein house of worship in the western part ot tbe city which other churches have greatly neglected in the selection of building sites. Tbe field for work in that direction has for quite a time been open, qui'e a number live in the western part and the population near by is in creasing. It is well that a permanent es tablishment has been effected. Eight converted during the revival will be baptized this afternoon at the foot of Broad street. Death of Mr. L. J. Taylor. Mr. L. J. Taylor received a telegram yesterday announcing the death of his wife, Mrs. Carrie Lovick Taylor, in St. John's Hospital. Baltimore, where the has been for two months past. Mrs. Taylor has lieen a great sufferer for two years past, but lias had the con solath us ol religion to siNtain her. She united with the Biptist church when on ly twelve years old. Sue was at the time ol her death in the 30th year of her age. Sheleav.su husband and lliriv chil drcn,h have the sympathies of our peo pie. The remains w ill arrive to night. The expectation is tor the funeral to take place toui.it row morning from the Baptist church. A (Jood Meeting. The Y. M. C. About Ready to Open Mr. Ii. Iv. Perry has been at the Atlan tic Hotel lor some little time now looking alter the getting of everything in perfect order for the season. This week his family conn s over to the hotel from their home in Beaufoit for the summer. We understand that owing to a member of people having signified their wish to get dowu to Morehead before the first of June, the date first chosen for opening it has been decided to regularly open the hotel in a very little while from cow. Morehead no doubt has a good season ahead and we are gl i.l of it. "Set Along." Il will not Iv a miss ut this Uine to tlirow out a few hints on tlie two words at the head of this article. As fashion seems to Iv the order of the day with some jvople. why not some leading church-goer set the fashion, w hen thev got to church to take seats as far up as possible aud not sit on the end of the pew and be a stumbling block in the way of others who come in after them. Some big fit persons who are in the hahit of sitting on the end f the pew don't want to Iv lathered in gelling up and dowu and having their corns mashed, and it is a general thing that people don't love to squeeze by in order to get a seat. So it is unpleasant and inconvenient all-i-oiiinl. Mv advice to you is to --set along." It is necessary now fur deacons and stewards to keep the end of the pew- lie cause they have to wait upon Mie eongn gation to take up the collections, etc. I am told that in olden times it wa-neees-san tliat certain jvrson should sit on the end w ith their muskets to keep off the Indians, We live in a mon-etilighteiied and i viliz il :u;e and that is not neees.sir . so lie in keeping with the times and set iilotu . t'lIfKCH M KM it i:t:. t'oxey's Army ami the South.
