The striking Kanawha Valley

Morris Creek Miners lias been

Oolorado SpriDge, Col., June 3
The sheriff continues making pre
parations for the battle with the
striking miners at Cripple Creek,
which will undoubtedly occur in a
few days. Another train load of
deputies was started for the front
about 3 o'clock this morning, and
two companies of cavalry lollowed
later. -
A large supply of ammunition
and army rations and camp equi
page will go forward tomorrow
night. Officers were out to-day re
cwit'ng men for a company whose
duty will be to accompany and pro
tec; the supply train. One of the
car airy companies is composed of
omeof the wealthiest mine and
land owners of this city.

Portland, Oregon, June 4.
The river continues to rise and the
situation grows more serions. The
river here is 31 feet above low
water, and i rising at the rate of 1
foot every 24 hours. Three fourths
of the wholesale district is under
water from 2 to 10 feet, and the
water is Cast encroaching upon the
beat part of tbe retail district Hun
dreds of small houses are to tbe
second story and have begun to
torn cer.
Many merchants are nnable to get
lumber to build platforms to keep
their goods above water. Every
available boat in tbe city has been
hired, and boat men receive from
tl to 95 per hour for their services.
The Western Union Telegraph
Clnmpanv'a office is snrronnded by
six feet of water. Only onebrTdge
is open to traffic. A rise of six in
ches more will shut off the gas sap
ply of the city. The union depot is
two feet under water, and tbe
Union Pacific car shops are sur
rounded by five feet of water.
The Southern Pacific is the only
road running trains. The Union
Pacific is hopelessly tied up.

finaneUI rep irts of the great na
tions ot toe earth for a number of
years and have reached the follow
ing couclQsious.
Much money means much .trade.
Much trade uiakes much work for
tbe faetoi ier1.
Much 'artery work gives much
employment to willing labor
ers. Much employment ena-blea the
laborers to buy the productions of
the factories and farms.
Much buying and selling makes
much business for the mer
chants. Much tnatiay cannot be had by
using gold only as a basis ot cur
rency; all history is witness to the
truth of ihts statement.
Reform seldom begins with ollice
holders tha' are in power.
'T'TDe ti'Toruia never seek to mul
tiply the Dumber of office hol
ders. To put the telegraphs and Bail
roads in the hands of the govern
ment would be to multiply office
holders beyond all precedent.
Multiplying office holders ln
crea3es the power of party at gov
ernment expense and opens tbe
way for more wide spread corrup
tion. A charge that does not reduce
govern tn e U ' t xpenses and increase
the general good ot the masses is
not rtfi-rui bu' siouply a change
that may ratifv soreheads but
bring no relief to the people.
That is tho best government
which give prosperity to tbe great
est number ot citizens.
Plentiful coinage of silver is the
only way to ruaks the currency oi
the laborin g classes plentiful.
Gold is peculiarly the currency
of the bankers and specula
tors. Silver is peculiarly the currency
of the mi- -'s.
Tho contraction of silver has
brought distress to the laborers ot
all nations who have tried the ex
periment. parties tbat are in power aud in
favor with bankers ind speculators
never reform iu favor of Lhe labor
ing classes; the last thirty years
of the U. S. Congress gives all need
lul evidence on this point. An ex
tiavagant government always
means a costly government always
means impoverishment of the peo
pie.
That is the meanest government
which concentrates capitol into a
few hands, and impoverishes the
wage, worker , and producers ut real
wealth.
When every voter adopts the
sentiment of true reforir, each
politician will be ready to con
form .
True reform is to avoid all sore
heads of every disposition, aud
make capability a.ad honesty tbe

The Must (iiirantie in the History of
Southern Kailroadiog.
MKMrnia. Teua., .Ihj .51. -The
most K'S'itic rate w.ir in the his
tory of railioad.ug iu the Southern
States has broken out, and every
road south ofthe Ohio and Poto
mac rivers and some of the Eas
tern lines areinvolved.
The trouble has been brewing lor
some time. Teree or four lines
have been secretly cutting rates on
Eastern business for a month past,
thereby reaping a rich harvest. The
other roads soon discovered the cut
and demanded that tho guerrilla
watfare cease. The Southern Rail
way and Steamship Association
waa asked to interfere and put a
Stop to the rate killing, but Chair
man Stahlman was unable to bring
about a settlement and advised tae
roads that had stood by the agree
ment to go in'o the fight for blood
Aa a result, the Louisville &
Nashville, the East Tennesse, Vir
ginta cv Georgia, the Tennessee
.Midland, the Kansas City, Mem
phis lS: liirmiugham, and the Chat
tanooga el: St. Louis Railroads to
day posted a notice that a reduct
ion of (o per cent, on freight to and
from E istern points would take
effect June -. The notice of the
cut created no little excitement in
railroad circb-p, but it was not
thought chat passenger rates would
be disturbed.
The idea wan dispelled late this
afternoon, however, when the Ten
nessee .Midland postd notice of a
sweeping cut in passenger tickets
to E istern and Northern points,
rue Louisville cv Nashvillo promptly
met the reduction aud announced
that it was in the fight to the finish.
The other lines have not met the
passenger cuts yet but they are ex
pected to do bo to-morrow.
ATLANTA, Ga., May .'51. At a
meeting here to day of tariff men
representing Southern lines West
ern cities, it was decided to meet
tbe cut made by Eastern lines on
business for the South. The indi
cations are that the war will extend
and become more intense.
