One oi Mr. .8. Howard's chil

badly that she died that day. The
children were left alone in the

Miss s telle WUkins arrived

Miss Delia. Marine, who has been

Wo are sorry to hear thai our

Snow, Beautiful Snow.
The young people are bappy and
tha older ones ought to be. Snow
baa fallen to the .depth of three
inches, aoM a more beautiful ooe
wa rarely see. it snowed from ten
'clock p. rn. Sunday till midday
Mocda), verr quietly bat almost
tnonssistly. This U aaa tima for
farmers to look over farm aceoants,
bslanos ap cost of producing the
rarioos crops, and te ui which
side the balance is.
It is a aerioas fact that very few
farmers know the exact cost of pro
dueing all the crops raised.
If all farmers would keep ac
coasts carefully and then meet
often aad discuss farm experiments
aad farm experiences, the sgricul
taral operations of the land would
mors cheerfully and profitably
performed.
Snow balling and snow eating
are prevail a g today as tae year
close, and we may expect acropol
eolda to be aahtred with the early
days of the New Year. In fact they
are already appearing. -
One lively boy from New Berne,
who is visiting nea.- Bel lair, had to
be snowed ander a few times before
he could realise that we oountiy
boys knew how to play with snow.
Welt, Christmas of 1894 is past
aad only ose casualty of any im
portance occurred about Bellair,
Alex Watson, who was clerking in
Guy 8. Lane's store set fire to some
powder while attempting to light
a fir cracker, and bad his face and
right hand seriously, bat not dtn
geroasly burned. He is doing all
right bow, and will soon be oat.
If the money wasted for powder
was pat a Ohrirtmaa offering to
sad the goepel to those who bave
nSYer had it, how much more
oar dear Savioar would be pleased
withthe result.

very long accounts oi the organ
ization of a wharfage and storage
combination which they pronounce
without rivals in the magnitude
of its operations. The combiu.i (
tion is a scheme brought about by j
the tact and business skill of Thos. ;
A. Mclntyre, President of the'
WilmtDgton, New Berne and Nor- 1
folk Railroad and owner of the i
famous Glenoe Stock farm, Onslow
Co., N. C. He has been shaping
bis plans for its consummation for
three years past.
Mr. Mclntyre is to be the Presi

Presidents, and William A. Nash,
Treasurer. It is to be known a the j
Brooklyn Wharf & Warehouse Co. ;
This immense plant con'rols,

miles of wharf a-ge, its warehouses,
storehouses, and grain elevators.
It comprises
houses, having

a floor area of
9,390,000 square feet, a water front
ot two and three -quarters miles,
four and nine tenth miles oi bulk
heads, thirty-five covered piers,
as well as nine open piers,
forty acres of storage yards, and
sixteen grain elevators with a daily
capacity oi i,uvu,uuu unsneis arm

The net earnings of theBe plants
last year aggregated about $1,500,

Mr. Mclntyres' concentrattve abil

By combining the 2 different
offices under one head he will save
approxinately 8500,000 per annu u
ixclusive of rebates and other
economies. This will bring the
net annual earnings np to 2.00,
000, approximately.
Mr. Mclntyre says tnat the
paolic will welcome the change.
Be says the charges nave been
excessive and the service ihe worst
possible, and that he went into
the scheme for the simple purpose
of procuring Uettei service for bin
own film, Mclntyre and Wardwell,
who handle more grain than an
other New York concern and are
much interested in the wharfage

Tbe Cold Weatber Playes Havoek with
all Kinds of Fruit Oranges Freeze
on the Trees -$5,000,000 Loss.
Jacksonville, FU.. Dee. 20
Disoatcbes to the Times-Union
indicate that tbe cold wave has
been very destructive to the orange
and vegetable crops. No section
of tbe State has escaped. Oranges
on tbe trees are frozen solid, and
it is said there is now not a sound
box of oranges in tbe State. Peas,
tomatoes and other vegetables are
ruined.
Dispatches from the east coast
say the pine-apple crop is ruined.
It is estimated that thera were
2,500,000 boxes of oranges on tbe
trees and that 2,000,000 of them
are a total loss. loung orange
groves are reported ruined. Oid
trees may pull through. The total
loss will, likely reach 2,000,00.
Tbe freeze is more disastrous than
the memorable one of 1SS6. The
average temperature early this
morning over Florid was about 20
degrees.
. A LATER ACCOUNT
Jacksonville, Fla., Dec. 30
To-day's report from the orange
and other fruit districts are still
more discouraging. Tbe pine
apple crop ot the East coast is
praoeically ruined, and last night's
cold (23 above zero) caused further
damage to oranges and oraDge
trees.
Tbe direct and incidental losses
will foot up fully 5,000,000, for
next yeai's crop of oranges will be
a milliou boxes short, on account
of this freeze. Several thousand
men employed in picking and
packing are thrown out ot work,
and much suffering must follow.
At S o'clock to-night the mercury
is at 42, with an official prediction
that it will not touch freezing point
before morning.
