General Fox on "Sonnd Money" Sil verites Trouljled Other Points of Interest Personals. Hon. Wm. H. Cox, .Secretary of tlie Senate leaves here tonight for Xew York, where lie will remain a few days. He regrets the wide spread agitation of the money question. He is heartily in favor of "sound money'' and gave me today some unanswerable arguments in favor of '-i0UIUj" currency, lie showed plainly how ''honest" money would be greatly to the advantage of the farmer. He also made plain how the credit of this government would be injured by any departure from the financial program so ably marked out by Mr. Cleveland and Mr. Carlisle. During the month of duly General Cox, accompanied by his two sons will visit Boston, Nicaragua, Saratoga, Montreal and (Quebec. The silver men are very much troubled at what seems to them to j be an .itable defeat. The silver j democrats are badly divided as to what policy they will pursue on the 14th of August when they meet, especially with regard to the popu lists. A Urief aud Tlain History of This Important Work. A canal across Nicaragua was pro posed nearly fifty years ago. and a concession was granteu by Nicaragua for a canal in IM'-1. Shortly after wards a route was laid out. which ran from San Juan del Norte (or Greytown) on the Atlantic, to and through Lake Nicaragua to lSrito, on the Pacific coast. This is tlm route the canal now under way will take. The Atlantic and Pacific Ship Caual Company began the canal, but our civil war iutefenvd with its work. Nicaragua hal a new Government, which seized the company's property, and in 1800 drove its employes out of the conn try. In 1Ss7, surveys having been made twice by our Government, a contract was made between the Government of Nicaragua and the Nicaragua Canal Association, and work was begun again. The canal will be 10'a c- s? miles long, 14n miles being through rivers and lakes and only -:' through cuttings; there will be a dam at the east end of Lake Nicaragua and between the lake and the Pacific: at the west end three locks will be needed. No work is being done at present. A Government Commission is on the ground now, and if it report fuvorably it is probable that the FTiited States will take up the work and provide the financial backing necessary. St. Louis G iobe-Demo-crat. (Queerest of Acei lents. The story runs that a man was found lying dead upon a . ouch, his life having been destroyed by a bullett discharged from a gun lving near. The circumstances of the matter positively proved that the case could not have been one of suicide, and, therefore, the only alternative which could be reasona bly suggested was that he had been murdered, An acquaintance was charged with the crime, b;.:t abso lute proof of guilt was not forth coming. One of the parties engaged in the case was so far interested in the peculiar facts of the death as to seek a different solution to the atl'air than that accepted by popular belief. The result of tjbs observa tion and deduction was very curioiie. The twelfth juror in the Fitzsimnions trial for manslaughter in the killing of Con Piordan in a sparring bout was secured this morning. The trial proper opened with a motion from Fitzsimnions' attorney to compel the prosecution to elect upon which count of the indictment Fitzsim nions was to be tried. This motion was denied. There are four counts in the indictment. In his opening argument to the jury, which lasted about an hour, District Attorney Shove said that he would prove that the blow given Riorda u by Fitzsimnions caused his death. He said that he would prove bv competent witnesses that Kiordan collapsed immediately after the blow on the chin and neck and that blow cracked the white matter in Pior dau's brain. There would be no contention by the prosecution that Fitzsimnions intended to kill Kiordan. Expert witnesses from among the Lost phy sicians in Syracuse, would bo called to show that the blow was the direct cause of death. Tlie District At torney hinted that there was dirty i work on the part of Pdtzsimmons in j this case and he would show it. Ilej said that Fitzsimnions had con-i demned Piordan's drunkenness sev eral times just before the bout. The irosccution likened the light tap given Ifiorqan to tlie kick of a mule and he told the jurors that when the ovidence was in they would see that they would prefer the latter of the two. The taking of testimony was then j begun and the gloves used by fitz simnions were plac-d in evidence. None of the witnesses did much to help along the contentions of the prosecuting attorney. Cue of the interesting features of the day occurred outside of the court room. After Con lliordan's funeral last November his body was placed in a receiving vault, and his brother in San Francisco notified. The brother never sent any word as to what wac to be done with the body. To-day Fitzsimjiiont, purchas ed a lot in Oakwood cemetery, and gave orders for the body to be pro perly cared for and buried ut his ex pense.
