citizecs on the serious charge of conspira
cy in procuring the injuring of partus
diseased with fatal maladiis so that they
could spec dily collect insurance money and
reap a large harvest ot spoils in short
ortler. We are informed that there ii re
two sides to the question and that so tar
only one side has been heard through

The preliminary trial will be hold to
day and the defendants will be ably rep
resented by two Xrew lie ran attorneys,
W. W. Clark and O. H. Union. They
went down last night for the purpose of
appearing lor thein at the preliminary ex
amination today. It will be held before
Allen C. Davis, J. P., of Morehcad City.
We understand that a number of the
tlelcnelants have over-due policies of in
surance in the companies, to compel the
piyment of which they hr-ughl suit in
the Superior court ot Caiteiot county,
and that most of those; suits have been re
moved to tbe circuit court at ll.dcigh,
and further that the same claims which
the defendants in the civil cases against
them set up as thciransr an-argued for
the prosecution 1. 1 those arrested.
We know nothing ul what tlie evidence
will show, but the above facts being so

nal actions agaiust the Beaufort citizens
might have been brought for purpose of
eliciting in advance evidence that would
come up on the, trial of those cas -s and
