or luture. He sual there were atius-s ol
these doctrines in Ihe sixteenth century
and no out- would deny it, but thtt the
church wni not responsible lor them ami

He gave as a prool of temporal pun-

told him in advance by the prophet Na

be forgiven. These accounts are found in
Numbers 12 ami J Chronicles 21.
Mr. (uinil delhicd indulgence il ninl'tl

Saints which urn stored ill the U'tasury ol

lie cited in particular, the cases ol John
the Baptist and tiie Virgin Miry, both of
w hom he stated w t re v it lout -in, and that
in consequence every p ing of sull'rring ol

who was a sinner. 'I lie punishment which
these merits are to t ti'-et are not judg

but ptnifttKiefi vh i(.'h the church prescribes
as an atonement toy the sin, and which
can be made less severe either by shorten
ing the tiuralion or lay enanging cue pen
ance to a milder form.
Indirectly the merits of indulgences are
aUo applied to souls in purgatory, 1 Cor
inthians Oitl-S was quoted and explained
as a case in w hich the Apostle Paul, mi
posed a penance, and 2. Cor. 2:5 I"
as a prool that he abei wards commuted
it. This example b.iug given, it was
followed by quotations from the cany
fathers to show that they continued to
follow the practice, and it was held that
absolution tiom mn preceded the prescri
bing ot the penance or at least that it was
during ;Ue tinje of its performance.
The authorities quoted fr proof of its
(early practice were: "Pope Innocence, J,
Sr. Jerome, St. Basil, the Council of
Ler'nla, the 314 decrees of Ancy ra, the
Council of Carl hage, St. Augustine; Tcr
hullian, the oldest Latin lather, who
was stated to be the first to mention this
practice; and St Cyprian iu the following
Century. The quotations extended on
do.vn to tKe time of leo X, who lived iu
the sixteenth century, which brought it to
the time of Luther, whose aback mi what
Catholics say was the abuse of indulgen
ces iccl to the Reformation and the pro
mitigation ol what tuey claim w as then a
new doctrine, the dogma of justilieatioii by
laith only, a doctrine not Iheu found iu uu y
creed, or the canons of the church or ihe
deciecs of any general council.
He explained Romans, 3:28 as refening
to a man's being saved in this- dispensa
tion without the ceremonial work s, of the
ol et dispensation, and quoted Such passa
ges as 1 Cor 13:2 anil Romans 2:1 to
piove that justitie itioii came by works us

Who .Should Advertise.
Who should advertise, is a question
that has been propounded ami auswered
in ditiereut ways.
Our answer: Every one v ho has any
thing to sell, whether it is proeluct ot the
head, braic or machine, and in cases
where those w ho w ish to buy, or -ex ure.
or exchange anything that tlieycuinot
obtaiu conveuientlv, they sh' uid adver
tise.
Advertising should be treated pre-c -elv
as any other investment, ami in nine eases
out often it pays a better profit than any
thing lor whieu money is spent.
The btst evidence that adver-ising pays
is the fact that millions of dolors are in
vested in it by all sorts and kinds ol tride
and by the most successful business mci;
in the laud Of course it pays
No sensible man cau believe that suc
cessful business houses advertise ami
become extensive advertisers for the fun
of the thing. With them it is business
just as much as buying stock or selhug
products.
There are certain principles oftraele
that men ought not to ignore, anel among
their, tbe principal one is regular, legiti
mate and persistent advertising.
