K. v. Jno. T. Abernathy was ro addiniil - ed into the conferenoe. a Kev. Dr. Law, of tin Anieiican Bible Society was introduced to the conference and made an interesting statement about the work of the Society, Rev. Dr. lloss, editot of the XashviHe Christian Advocate, was presented to the conference. Dr. j lloss spoke at some length concern ing the great organ of tbe .southern Methodist Church. Dr. lloss is edit ing one of the ablest religious jour nals in America, a paper that every Southern Methodist can be justly proud of. Dr. lloss. remarks were in a very happy vein. Dr. Hoss said that he had came to the edi torial chair of Southern Methodism without having bad any previous experience in conducting a public journal. He had served in nearly every other office from plowing a one-eyed mule upon a poor farm in Tennessee to a professorship in a great university, and yet he was a stranger to the editorial chair. The Doctor said that the hardest place he had ever been in is that of the editor's chair. The Conference unanimously passed a resolution stating its hearty endorsement of Dr. Kilgo's position on Christian education. The report of the special commit tee appointed at the last year's Con ference to select one of the editors of the North Carolina Christian Advocate was submitted aa follows: "After conference with the pie sent editors, the committee was un able to come to any agreement, two members of the committee concur ring in the plans of tho present editors and two members non-con curring. Your committee is there fore unable to advise any line of action to the Conference in this matter." The report was referred to the committee on books and periodi cals. In the afternoon the Conference Historical Society held its armu;U meeting. A paper of rare merit was read by Professor Bassett of Trinity College. Dr. Bassett's subject was the "Xature and Problems of the Work of tho Historical Society." He said : Eev. Dr. Pone, was re-elected president of the society. Rev. T. N. Ivey secretary'. Rev. W. II. The owner of this principality is a generous and liberal-minded wo man about sixty years of age. She docs much good and takes care of her people. To each laborer on her setates she gives a cow. Her ranch of Santa Gcrtrulis is tho largest in tho world. It is boundeft by Cor pus Christi Bay-for a distance of forty miks, and by barbed wire fenccj for JOO miles more. From her front door to her front gate is thirteen miles, and she can drive in her carriage sixty-five miles in n straight line without going off her own premises. Her house is like a castle on the Rhine a typical bar onial mansion. It is situated on a slight eminence, surrounded by the modest dwellings of her dependents and by fields of corn. Beyond on every side, is a green wilderness of tncsqiute and cactus. The chateau is as completely furnished and as handsomely equip ped as any mansion on Fifth avenue, New York. No luxury that money can buy anywhere is lacking to the widow, who, by the way, is the daughter of the first Presbyterian missionary to tho Rio Grande. Corpus Christi is the terminus of a railway, and from that point a continuous stream of wagons carries ice and other necessaries to the ranch. Mrs. King lives for several months of each year in a palace at Corpus Christi. Her son-in-law, R. J. Kiebcrk, is general manager of the ranch on which are 200,000 cat tle of improved breeds. Long trains of freight cars are made np at Cor pus Obristi to carry Mrs. King s cattle to the East. To rue the vast estate costs about $100,000 a year. For every twenty miles ot barbed fence there is a man to make repairs and see that no break occurs. In the old days to cut a fence was an offence likely to re sult in the death of the perpetrators of the act. Three hundred cowboys are regularly employed, 1,200 ponies being set aside lor their use.
