ON A MISSION" OF Df-STItr. TION. From the barber shop ti c lire spreid rapmly in t hrce ilin-jtions. Out at the front the row of wood build ing on the Bernard property across lhc street fill an easy prey. The wind was blowing from the southwest and the lire w ent uo further up Third street than Dr. B .gwe i's office. Io, the other oirectiou it swept to and destroyed the law building occupied by C. M Bernard and F. (1. James, and from this building Skinner & Vyhedixe's office-. Smith's stib.es and Hooker s bor room weie only s.ved by strcnip us work. Had these -tniiidings been lost the fire would have gone a: hast one or two blocks each way on Cotanch street. HEART-SICKEXINfb Down Evans street on either side the raging flames continued their mad tight. bcKing up two blocks of s lendid brick lui Idings. It was tnough tinukullie heart suk to see the walls o: thes-; hund soine buildings one after another totter and fall a mass of ruins. It looked now like the whole of the street would In ch .met I and not a business bouse left. Busv woi kers hurried with turns ol goods until the streets and lots for squares anay were covered with conglomerated stocks of merchandise. BI ILIIPSO TORN DOWN. As the fire came on down the street it was concludid that if the old DaDcy frame bui'dmg on the corner could be torn down it would prevent the fire from crossing Fourth stieet, and get'ing this buildiog out of the way would alsi save tbe doubled store of J B. Cherry & Co., which it faced, as it was not thought their store would catch from tlje Tyson brick black then burning. Severd kegs of pow der were exploded about the Dancy building only demolishing a small part of the structure, when workmen sit to with axes and ropes and lit-rally cut and tore awav tbe lower part of the house, letting tbe npper sbiry ot the wing on the street come down with a ciash. HEROIC WORK. Fortunately tne fire never reached this building at all, but was checked at the Brown aDd Hooker bui diug next to it. ADd stopping it there was as da:ing and heroic work as we ever saw done. S. T. Hooker, Chief of the Fire Dopaitmint maishulled a lew brave men to his as-i-tsnre and they stood on top ot the build ing in a fxce of blistering beat and tl,. i.es and with another squad of workers on the inside, they brnght manfully until the unjoining building, only sep.trjt. d by a single brick wall, had burnul b. vend the danger line I' is known that Mr. Hooker is the best manager and worker at a. fltv the town h.is, and his own pro perty being in jeop.rdy seemed to nerve hiro for more strenuous efforts thai ever, and after a gallant tight his bidding was saveo. COURT HOUSE NAIUto XV I. Y ESCAPES. While the tire was burning tierces t sparks rained thick and last on r.n fs of buildings beyond the public square, and they had to be constantly wafcbe.l to pre vent the Are breaking ou. in that quartc. Suddenly there was a my "tie Court House is on fire," as a light blaze -appear ed on the steeple of that structure. Sev eral men rushed up the flight "f sta rs and made their way out to the roof of thai budding. With ropes a ladder wss diavvn over the tall aves und braced against the steeple. Quick as a flash BobMoye scaled ihe ladder to the lop and 1" und he was still some teet from the blaze. Two mm followed him up the ladder nnd these held Bob out at arms length above their heads until he ci u'd put out tbe Bte and saved the building. It was a noble and hazz.rdous piece or work. LACK OF WATER THE TROUBLE. Because of the snuc old trouble that the R-fleet or has bee gel s. long to be remedied scarcity uf water the firemen wiih t)ie engine were powerless to do effective wor. H 'hen they tiiat reached the tire even one decent well would have aitibled them to have put it out in the I'oo n where it originated. As it was l hey stuitid at the market hon-e e'l but hoi onlv got a stream f.irly s ar e I ! .fore the well was exhausted. They worked ar duously, moving the engine mm place to place trying t i fiud wt. r. even going down to the branch near the Y. SAD ! SA D ! All day Sunday huudreds of people throoged the streets to behold tbe gloomy picture presented in the ruin5, and many a heart ached a. they saw in tne smoking heaps half tho business portion of the town. A Neglected Place of the Nain Public Road A Load Thrown Frjm a Wag on. Such a storm of'wind and snow is howling aroun 1 the Bellair settlers, that it is rather hard work to keep warm. Truck work is suspended and to keep from freezing seems to be the important business at present. The thermometer is about 15 this evemii Feb. 11 Gb and is falling fast. News is not plentiful about here but snow is, ami as this is the first one this year, iet us all try to enjoy it. and as the snow passes away we will get some important news, per haps ;i wedding, a funeral or some thing. It may be news to the road super visors of township Xo. 8, to tell them that only a few days ago just abo t the hour of twilight's evening departure, on the road leading from Xev lk-rne to Bellair and just below the Washington fotk of said road, in a very deep large hole a barrel of sugar some chocolate cakes and perhaps other little articles were deposited from a wagon as it was moving up said road, these tilings however were not deposited for safe keening in a place, No, No, but drawn by the centre of gravity because one end of the wagon was in the hole, and the hole being three feet deep that end was three feet lower than the other end of the wagon. If mud was as good as flour to make cakes such a hole would be rich to attach to a bakery, but for such a place to be clear across a public road in a civilized part of Craven county ? It looks rather like a compromise to respectable civiliza tion.
