What St sense of tbe swing of history on has in such places, and before the eternity of nature how ephemeral and incoeequently human life seems. Scribners. antes Grove's Tasteless Chill Tonic to do Kits riylafr With a Turpeae. Uuring twe summers previous to the present Messrs. Clayton and Ferguson of the Itli:e Hill nuteoio- loical observatory, assis-te.i by Win A. Eddy, of Buvonne, X. J. have made certain investigations in me teorology by means of kiteB. The scene of operations was Ulue Hill, an emiuencc a few inilt-d south of Boston, 635 feet in heieht. Num- erous sues oi tne Malay pal tern, in All sizes varying irom tive to over nine feet in height, have been brought into service i y these experiments. The larger. kits require, of couise, a cord of large size, yet any great length of this is sufficient to pull them down if the bneze bo light, and often sev ;ral of the Bmaller k ites have to be sent up iu advance to pull up a large one. On a few occasions they have hal up at once as inanv as a dozen kites, all attached b branch-String i to tbe main line. Iu a fresh breeze tbe combined pull from the usuil number is about 120 pounds and is much greater in gusts. A huge reel ou trucks has been devised for holJing the string, the length ran out being, registered by a wheel aad a dial. Nearly every diiy during tin's and the two previ ous seasons there have been sent up on the line an aneroid barometer and a self registering thermometer, by which the atmospheric pressure and the temperature at the highest altitude reached are ascertained, comparison being made with similar records at tho surface of the earth for the same time. A special appa ratus contained in a tin case has now been constructed for these pur poses for the humidity and for measuring the spre 1 of the wind, changes of weather are indicated at the high altitudes many hours earl ier than on tho hilltop. This fp paratus has recently teen sent to a height of a'out oue mile. Last year experiments were begun in bird's-eye photography, the cam era being suspended from tbe kite and operated by cords from die round. Most of the views obtained were quite clear and very pleasing from their uniqueness. Several in teresting phenomena have beer noticed in those experiments. Earl) one Angu it afternoon, while a five foot kite was aloft in a 'oreeee sr. tight as to barely keep it from fall ing, a large cumulus cloni approacl sd the zenith. When directly abovt the kite the latter began to ascend rapidly and almost vertically, ouh ceasing wben its string was all out md drawn taut. It followed tbt course of the cloud across the sky at short dis ance, but when it was qoiitt-- past rapi lit fell to its forrxer posi tion. Anothe. phenomenon in the Blue hill flying is the electrical manifestation i on the kHe string at all altitudes, but in greatest extent' when the kitsa are highest. Ou ac count of th ' pull on the string by the wind our Blue hill flyers have adopted floe piano wire for kile cord, as it ha i the smallest surface in proportion to the weight of any thing yet found. With this, how ever, the electric sparks often proved very annoying to the person holding the kite, until relief was found by thrusting th i end of a connecting wire into the ground. Even with this the vm vnipulators of the kites sometimes echibiled amusing jumps and contortions when a mischievous boy happened to kick off the stone hich held the wiie down. Boston people will be interested to ream Chat its celebrated east wind at its beginning enters like a wedge be tween tbj eirth and the stratum of atmosphere next above it. A north erly wind, on the contrary, slides along the lower stratum and chills downward, also tending downward in mass. A warm upper stratum does not affect the lower atmosphere so quickly. Up to the present time the greatest altitude to which a kite has been fl wn is 7,33J . feet 1,000 feet higher than Mount Washington This was a-complished at Rlue hill on August 1, tie kites used being a nine-foot kite, led by a smaller one rit.hu second .smaller oue below. The wiud surface furnished by these vas about siity Gve square feet. V. Y. Independent. "MOTHERS' FRIEND" Short n labor, lessena pain.
