Orifton, N. C, is not a citv, 7iot even a large town, yet it seems anxious to attract attention; any way if it continues it is bound to at tract a notoriety which many places do not care for. Last week it was a murder and yesterday it was bur glary. Mr. Bryan Gardner, who keeps a bar at G rifton, has been in this city spending a few days, but yesterday he received word that his place had been broken into, and he left in a hurry to see what damage and loss he had sustained. ATter Hnay lw. Within the last few days, thtie was a small house on the lot of Mrs. Wm. Whitford, pulled down. With this house there is connected a strange story : During the late war, the Federal hospital being near it, it was used in which to deposit the dead. One morning in removing them, prepar atory to build, one of the negroes, who had been connected with the army and who it was supposed was dead, opened his eyes, notwithstand ing that while in the house his body had been in the bottom tier of the dead. After the astonishment of the burial corps had subsided, the negrj was sent back to the hospital and soon entirely reeoveted his health. Now some years had elapsed. - wtinn t h n nnur i,( f li r nrnmiwi 1 ... -..v. . ... , . t:.r., S fiim-.nn vieitr,,! jh. ... .jwv.v.ivn, ' ,DI i her relatives at I'rovidence. At last a small bootblack sauntered by, and the man concluded to take chances. With a fine pretense of having just dropped the bills, the man gruffly ordered the younster to assist him. The hoy comprehended the situation at a glance, seized the little fortune, took to his heels, and, easily dis tancing h's angry pursuer, vanished permanently from the scene. Fx. Unexpected Hurricane. The recent hurricane in the West Indies is remarkable in that it came at a time of the year when the resi dents of the islands consider them selves almost safe or quite safe from such visitations. The hurricane months are July, August, Septem oer. aud October. These storms are slight a flairs, from the meteorolo gist's point of view, for they move along a narrow path ami it is rarely many miles long. Their violence within this limited field, however, is truly frightful, and in a few minutes one of them will often change part of a West Indian island to a treeless desert. What may be called the aabits of these storms are so well understood nowadays that the Cap tains of vessels dread them little, except when close to land. With plenty of sea room they can be e:;ii avoided, for the barometer arwaf- gives timely and unmistakable wai 11 mgaud the direction of the wind re veals exactly where the storm centre :s, whether it is approacning 01 receding, and the proper course to steer for safeiv. Ex. A Remarkable Law. From Argentina by way of Fane it is only fair to admit comes news of the passage of a remarkable law, by the enforcement of which tin statesmen of that far-away republic very foolishly expect in :iic couist of a few years to crowd us plams- and mountains with inhabitant,--. One clause of this euactmenl reads "On and after Januaiy 1, every unmarried male citizen of Argentina who ia not less than twenty, or more than eighty, years of age, shall, on the first day of every month, pay a tax, the amount to be determined by the municipal authorities." This is certainly going a long wave, but the South Ameri can legislators went still further, if the Parisian dispatch can be trusted nd rounded out their law with an other clause, which reads: "A celi bate of either sex who shall, without egitimate motive, reject the ad dresses of him or her who may aspire to her or his hand, and who continues contumaciously unmar ried, shall pay the sum of 500 pias tres for the benefit of the person, man or woman, who has been so refused.'' Perhaps this schonie will work as its inventors hope, but the chances are that before January 1 arrives, Argentina will have lost by emigration every unmarried person now living in the country. That second provision would inspire terror even in the late Mr. Holmes. Ex. Bncklen'a Arnica Salve.
