C, August 10 Governor Russell has received such advices regard ing the conduct of the "santified bandit" now on the coast of this State that he directs the solicitors of two districts to prosecute, them. They are now working in Carteret county mainjy. oaiuruay rrencn ftroiid river, near Marshal, rose eight feet in four hours. It swept away a man and woman who were iu a buggy. Her body was found today ten miles down stream. It is learned that earnest efforts are being made to effect reconciliation be tween Governor Russell and Senator Pritchart', who for months have occn at outs. Eight members of the Populist Stale committee, which meets here Wednesday are said to be friends of Gongrcssman Skinner and inimical to Senator Butler. They will try to oust A. E. Fountain as Populist State chairman. The incctinjr will be lively, as llutler will do some plain talking. Some leading populists are now declar ing that unless the railway commission takes more positive action in reducing rates and increasing taxable values Hie next Legislature will abolish it. Rain is badly needed in the counties along the northern border of the State. United Slates Marshal O. J. Carroll is very sick at Connelly's Springs. It looks quite like collapse. It is the plan to take him to Buffalo Springs. Letters to the commissioner of agri culture from prominent Colorado people say marly are coming from that State to North Carolina. At the yearly meeting of the (junkers, or Friends, at High I'oin: onlv about five thousand persons were present. Usually there are double that number. Distinctive Quaker dress is now entirely discarded. Today the election is heine; held to ascertain if the voters are willing t, levy a special lax, not o exceed 10 cents on the $100 anil 110 cents on pl, to main tain public schools A spirited i-inipaign has been waned in few places, but in most of the townships thei r is no interest. Captain Claude 11. Henson, lor lifteen years one of the principals of tin- Kaleigh Male Academy, is now at Norfolk, and in September takes charge of the King's Mountain Academy. The state roof is being pu! mi the Map tint Female University here. In all ways the work is being pushed in order In gel the building in readiness for three lain dred students by November 1st. Though the shipments of choice grapes from this city continue, yet prices are very low. It is a disappointment to the growers, who felt sure of high prices. WHEAT STILL JUMPING. Advnnco or Two OntN. I'ittsbcbo, August 11, Coal is still plentiful here and prices are steady. There is still a large quantity of coal in the river available for rail shipments, but much held for emergencies Is now being sold, as it Is regarded by the oerators as almost certain that a break w ill lie made by the miners al several places within the next ten days. The reason given for this view is that there is great destitution among the fam ilies in the villages surrouiidin the mines. The contributions from the pub lic have been devoted largely to the feed ing of the men at thu camps, while the women and children iu the isolated vil lages have been neglected. Appeals to the otlicials come from the villages every day for aid for the families of men who are at the various camps. Operators think the strike will be con tinued at certain places as long as the contributors are liberal, but the destitu tion which prevails in the villages is re lied upon to induce the men to accept the oilers which have been made by operators until such time as a settled rate will have been established. It is stated here today that the New York and Cleveland (i as Coal Company has under consideration a plan for shar ing profits annually with the miners. The plan will not be put into cITect until after the strike. tMcKro on Trial. Special to Journal. R.U.l'.Iiiu, N.
