The movement on foot to estab lish a first class brass band in this city, which is now being done, is one that deserves the hearty sup port of every citizen. The older people of tbe city will remember the splendid band which was here about twenty years ago, and the pleasure it gave our people, not to mention the reputation it gave New Berne. By placing the present band upon a solid foo.ing, it will be able to take care of itself afterwards, and there can be no ucstion of the bene fits which it will give the city and its people. Help it. Cox admits that bo was surprised yesterday at the corner Bollock and Craven streets when his wheel ran over a moccasin snake that was making his way snake fashion across the street. The moccasin was crossing the road from the direction of Dr. Hughes' yard. After being run over tne BtiaKe was Uesp itched by ahoy with a stick so that this particular reptilo will do no harm. The moc casin is considered very venomous, and is a native of the Southern States, There are two varieties, the water and the upland moccasin, the the latter is sometimis known as the cotton-mouthed moccasin. The contest ( ?) was between a black horse, a white horse and a mule, trotting race, no class. Black took tho lead at ouco, Mule following, and White bringing up the rear of the procession. On the second lap, Black led Mulo by fifty yards, White a close(?) third by two hundred yards. Black winning in a walk. The second heat was closer, Black Inline held back as much as noHti- ble, but Mule conld not beat him. White took third place, flnishine probably fifty yards in the rear of Mule.
