Dan Moore, known quite well as "1, 1111 ber lan," obtniucd $JJ from a Middle street merchant to run a confectionary stand at the colored Fair. When the Fair closed Friday he cashed up and bought a ticket to leave yesterday morn Ing by the A. & N. (',. (rain. He was not cute enough for the afore said merchant however, who was at the station with a warrant. Dan was found sealed in a car ready to travel, but olti cers llrlnson and MoDtague intimated to him that walking to the City Hall was better than riding and now his case is awaiting a decision by the Mayor. The Kliislun IniluMtrlal Ismie. The Kiuslon Free l'ress has Issued a most creditable and interesting Indus trial Issue of its city, and the Joi;knai. acknowledges the receipt of a copy of the same. The Issue is especially creditable ai it represents all home work, being the product of the pen and press of Kinston. The work is a valuable one as fully showing Kinston's progress and advan lages, and is published in an attractive and nteresting form. Tlitt Jewlnli Nfiw Year. It la a matter to be much regretted that if a local 1 terprise starts in this city, and lt making a success, although its territory may 00 ! limited, so that another like enterpriaei could not possibly succeed, yet there is always a desire upon the part of our c itiens lo enter in a Bimilar industry 1 hereby paralyiing both. is it not possible, Mr. F.ditor, that something may be done In our communi ty that will beget in the minds and hearts of our people a desire to help each ' other rather l lorn pull down those that : are trying to do something 10 build up on r city aud il s surroundings, ll is a ! matter well known throughout the State that t he cotton mill industry is a great 'developer of the towns In which they are located. They give employment to lalior, they create a demand for agricul tural products, they give ac Impetus to the retail trade, and there is hardly a br .tin h of busiuess in I lie way of mer csut ilc pursuits that does not feel the bj ielu ial establishment iu such an en terprise. The natural advantages of New Bern have been harped on for years past, aud our people feel that the time will come when foreign capital w ill come in aud establish these industries, hut taking the past as a guide to the futiiic, we assert w il hunt fear of contradiction that until local i apilal lirsl interests itself in tbe establishment of these enterprises, that foicign capital will steer aloof. Ilul until 0111 people arc brought face to face w ith lies Mid condition, and put their sli iirlili 1 to the wheel, and show their fadh lo their works, we may live ou iu hopes that will end without fruition. Some lime ago a Chamber of C m iii'.Tcc as orgauized, and it now has more l ha. 1 eighty members. The wilier was appointed as chairman of the com mitlee mi industries aud business enter prises, and through articles appearing in your paper the public were asked to give this committee information which tney might use in inducing enterprises to come lo our city, nd your committee had hut lliree responses to their efforts. Can it be possible Mr. Editor, that the business men in our city are aalisfied with the condition of affairs existing here today? Can it be possible that our people will for years to come walk in the beaten paths ol iheir great grandfathers and be satisfied and contented' Can il be possible that Ihe business aud residen tial property that is now vacant that the owners can be satisfied w ith this con dition of affairs? if not, then let us gel together, let us w 111 k in peace and har mony, let every man do his part, and a dillerent stale of nil nils will exist in tbe near future than has ever existed in our city. You liusine.-s men, you men who have money, invested in North Carolina 4',' bonds, and note and mortgage, take out a part of this money, put it into a cotton mill, nnd instead of drawing 4 to (K, help to liiiilu up your town aud at the same time add to your incomes. What other business cau you mention thai has been as successful? Bill I think I hear some of our busi ness men replying lo this, saying, But we know nothing of ihe mauufacluie of cotton goods or of cotton mill Industry, Admit it. Have you no faith In the judgment of others? Do you not know as a matter of fact that there are men who are thomughly conversant with this business, honest aud reliable men, who cau be imployed to take charge of a mill plaut, and to make it a success? The writer with two others made a partial canvass of the city during the month of July lo obtain tulncrlptlont (or Ihe establishment of a cotton mill. P. U. Psli.ktikr. MINK WHIP. Aay Kluil From TVn atra to Kxpunplno Ones. Other Thlairs Too. New Bern has loug been adistributlng point for horses and mules aud has also become a place where everything per taining to horse flesh can be obtained, buggies, wagons, harness and all that. As an lustance of what is doue In this way, tbe following will show. At tho stables of John W. Stewart on Broad street were seen yesterday a single or der of buggy whips, aud this was to the number of 48 dozen, all of one kind. This shows that there is soinelbi ig doue in whips here. These whips retail for ten rents and are a marvel at the price. In fact it is hard to see how they can be made at that. Au Inspection of the various kinds of whips was iuleresliug. A handsome jel low wulp with a "Yellow Kid" label sells for 25 cents and from that up lo $ 2.00 there were many styles. A wicked looking whip is the bull whip, a long rawhide covered with leather for driving steers in the woods, and dog whips which are light colored leather plaited affairs with a whistle in the handle and alto riding whips of all kinds. Quite a good scheme are tbe whip ends for sale. These arc for whips that are broken, so that if you wish to keep the handle to your broken whip, these are fitted on at a cost of 25 cents and your whip Is as good aa new. Of course whips are on'y one item carried hy an up-to date livery. There are constantly new thlugs being put on the market, new inventions, Iuleresliug in themselves. A patent axle was exhi bited by Mr. Stewart thai will ruu 1,000 miles without oiling A rubber bit, very flexible because it is all rubber except a fine chaiu running through the ceutre, is just the thing for a seusltlve mouthed horse. Patent snaps aud all that sort of thing are kept and tingle pieces of any part of a vehicle or harness. Storm aprons and muteilal for making (hem, robes of all sorts bIzus aud colon from 30 cent "ki vers" lo tine plush things lhai cost $20., Perhaps one should be surprised to find sleigh bells for sale, but they arc there all the same, and In fact everything from big lo Utile, anil some closets full of liniment "good for man or beast."
