Dynamite Explodes In a Toolhotue On

Philadelphia, Jan. 7. An explosion
of dynamite occurred today In a con
tractor's toolhonse beside the Pennsyl
vania railroad tracka in West Philadel
phia,
"Doc" Mullen, a watchman employed
by P. IfcManoa, the contractor, was lit
erally blown to pieces and a dozen per
sons living In the vicinity were cat by
flying glats from the shattered windows
of their houses,
A number of laborers employed by Mc
Manna were at work making evacua
tions along the line of the railroad. The
atlcks ot dynamite used for blasting had
been frozen and Mullen placed them
ear stove In the hut to thaw out The
explosion followed, killing Mullen In
stantly and wrecking the shanty.
The pavement for blocks were cover
ed with broken glass from the shattered
window pane of the dwellings. Twenty
empty passenger coaches coaches stand
ing on a aiding of the Pennsylvania rail
road were damaged.

Niw Tobk, Jan. 7 Perry Belmont
the Democratic candidate, was defeated
for Congress in the speoial election
in this Seventh district to day by Mon
tagne Lesseler, the Republican candi
date. The vote stood: Lesseler, 7,077; Bel
mont, 7,283, giving the former a plural
ity of 894 votes.
Ex-Confederates' Claims.
Washington, Jan 7 A bill of much
interest to ex-Confederate soldiers to
day waa favorably acted npon by the
House Committee on War Claims.

side arms taken from them in violation

dent Grover Cleveland, though not yet
fully recovered from his Illness, is much

Affairs of Germany.
Berlin, Jan. 8. The speech from the
throne, read by the imperial chancellor,
Count von Buelow, at the opening of
the Prussian Diet today, took a gloomy
view of the economic situation. It
pointed out that tbe revenue of the
State railroads in 1001 fell considerably
short ot the estimates, and 'that tbe
whole results of the financial year were
disappointing.
In the budget for 1903 the revenue is
estimated below that of the current year
bat the balance between revenue and the
expenditure Is to be maintained without
having recourse to loan. '

Rae of Wilmington, who la here, aaya
the electric railway from Wilmington to
the coast at Wrlghtsville will be com
pleted in time for the aummer trade.
Work is now in progress.
During the past year the State library
acquired 1,069 books. Of these 83 were
about North Carolina or by North Caro
linians. The 19th volume of the State Records
has appeared. There will be one more
volume and then the general Index.
The 3d volume of the North Carolina
Regimental Histories was delivered to
the State Librarian today.
The chief clerk to the State superin
tendent of public Instruction says the
latter today began the seventh week of
bis attack of pneumonia. He says the
superintendent's cough Is bad, his tem
perature rises nightly and his left lung
has not healed.
Secretary Bruner of the agricultural
department left today for the Charleston
Exposition. He says tbe exhibit of the
department there is completed. It is
so admirably laid out that what yet re
mains to be done is simply changes to
improve tbe effect.
President Huith G. Chatham of the
North Carolina railway has just leturned
from Charleston. He says that the North
Carolina exhibit Is the best there and
the only complete one. Quite a number
of .North Carolina cotton mills are rep
resented in the 'xotton palace", many
are not.
The railway which is to be built from
Kin stem southward, is to strike the At
lantic Coast Line at Warsaw. The road
will be 6G miles long. The KInston peo
ple will build it to Hallsvllle, and the
Wilmington lumber interest will build
from Wallace to Elallsville.
Tho grounds of the State Normal and
Industrial College at Greensboro, now
very bare, are to be beautified. George
Foster Pe ibody gavo to the College' for
a park $10,003 and of this $5C00 Is to be
at once expended. In the spring there
will be some notable visitors to the col
lege, among them, President Elliott of
Harvard.
Tho Norwood Cigar company of this
city has the largest factory in the Stale.
It today declared an 8 per cent divi
dend.

General Managor T. F. Cole, of the
United States Steel Corporation, arrived

Men were at work all night putting In
additionad pumps to reduce the water in
the drift where the men are entombed
and it possible prevent the mine from
flooding. The additional pumps are work
ing, and the water is under control. Mine

all the bodies.
