C. as second-class matter. Section One, Tuesday, Jan. 23, 190S The Greenville Recorder says that the result of the Indictments bronght against the slot machines In its town has re salted in all of them being shot down and some already shipped away. War rants were'aworn out before the Mayor in this case. It is in this connection fair to remark that the continuance of these machines In operation here is a reflection on the morality and intelli gence of our people. Every few days at this season of the year the papers of the State record the fatal or serious burning of a child that has been left exposed to an open fire place or unprotected stove. Often the result Is a lifetime disfigurement. While accidents will some times occur, it Is no less than criminal carelessness to leave children exposed to an open fire. Burned children dread the fire but the lesson Is a too costly one to the subject. Also the leaving of small children alone In a house for any length of time Is In human. PRINCE HENRY'S VISIT. The approaching visit of Prince Henry of Germany, brother of the Emperor WilliamII Is attracting great attention, not only in the land he will visit, but in the neighboring and jealous Powers of Europe. The fear among them Is that Germany will be drawn Into too friendly relations with this country. There seems to be a large class of people in this coun try who are most anxious to cultivate good relations with the despotic govern ments of the old world. Russia Is always counted our friend and now Germany Is assuming an especially friendly atti tude. Prince Henry will meet with a warm reception, as he should, for while he rep resents despostism, he; stands for the German nation The .American people are not churls and know how to respect others anddemand the respect that is due. At the same time it Is not probab'.e that there will be a friendly or other al liance between the United States and Germany. In the first place there Is a constant commercial war between the two countries, due to the high tariffs Im posed by both nations. And In a politi cal sense the countries are very far apart. Whatever the feelings of Ameri cans may be for the German people, who are the kindest and In many ways the most lovable beings on earth, there can be no sincere regard for the German government which is the most arbitrary and despotic one In Europe, not except ing in many ways the rule of the White Czar himself. Fortunately for the peace of Europe, the Emperor William is a good deal of a blusterer and does not mean what he says. At least his words are always londer than his actions and when he speaks of "grinding to powder" his sub sequent deeds have often been of a re treating nature- TheJ spectacle of the ruler of a great nation Issuing a mani festo to his army that "some day it might be called upon to crush the peo ple" and that he expected his soldiers to do their duty, was an astonishing one to even those who were accusomed to the erratic character of the Kaiser. Of coarse there will be crowds of hero worshippers who will follow the trail of the German Prince while In this coun try, and probably; many foolish things will be said and done, but no harm will result. If there are any who fancy that the welcome shown tot Ylsltor indi cates a lasting sympathy between free dom and tyranny they will likely be dis illusioned by the events of the future, , KILL THE DISEASE , . The prevalence of smallpox In this State Is by no means exceptional for the disease is common In all parts of the country and especially so la a number Western States where the most strin gent regulations have as yet failed to deck its spread. ";V-'V; Tiers to pretty warfare going i ow La Wllaoa county awl the discus-1 lion has reached the acuta stage, one side claiming that the disease so preva lent there is aot really smallpox but a sense brought . back by returning soldiers and a heritage of the Spanish war. Many persons have bees drawn into the controversy, the State Board of Health holding that ft Is smallpox and should be stamped out by quaran tine and other stringent measures. It la asserted that where small pox now exists la several adjoining counties that the origin of the disease can be traced to Wilson county, being carried from that county by people jwho went there. This Is the belief of a large num ber of people and It would seem to only the part of ordinary decency and con sideration tor the rights and feelings of others for the Wilson county authorities to do everything in their power to lessen and abolish the evil. It is true that in any case it Is a mild type of the dire disease and few deaths occur, but if It even so closely resembles the real thing It must be dreadful enough to call for Its banishment. Every once In a while there is aroused a sentiment against vaccination. This has lately been stimulated by the unfor tunate use of impure virus, due to crim inal carelessness in the St. Louis cases and to neglect of ordinary precautions iu the New Jersey Instance. The dis covery of the efficacy of vaccination by Jenner has been hailed for over a cen tury as one of the greatest achievements known to science and it Is discouraging in this day and time to find cer tain illogical people talking agalnBt the system. Millions upon millions of lives have been saved by the use of the vaccine virus. Before the dls covery by Jenner, it is said that In whole sections of Europe it was hard to find a parson unscarred by the ravages of smallpox. It spared neither youth or age, wealth or poverty and it fell upon the just and upon the unjust. The hope of Jenner that the pest would be exter minated from the world has not been granted but the benefits have been be yond computation. The commendable efforts of the New Bern authorities when the disease vis ited here a short time ago have been ex perienced. The disease was prevented from spreading and stampted out. Kins ton is now doing the same thine. This kind of prompt action should be fol lowed by all places where the infection touches. CHOOSING DEMOCRATIC CANDI DATES. Democratic boomers in State and Na tion permit an over charge of mixed sentiment and enthusiasm to fill their minds in naming candidates for office. The Republican party is derided for its "practical politics" by thoughtless Democrats, who fall to note that this very practicality Is what wins. In presidential matters, .these Demo cratic boomers at once seized upon Ad miral Dewey upon his return home as a candidate for their party, simply because the Admiral was In high favor with the people. It was not even known that Mr. Dewey was a Democrat, but the enthu siasts favored him not for party reasons of policy, but for reasons of a possible success at the polls. Admiral Schley, on account of a pub 11c injustice, was seized upon as a candi date, and a presidential boom started In his f svor. General Miles because of a public re buke by the President, became a possl bility in the eyes of these same boomers and enthusiasts. Sentiment tn the case of such a man as Admiral Schley, is one thing today, But how about the practical part tomor row. Will the voters be guided to;vote for him, and then there Is the political class, which must have its say In the matter. Bo far as General Mites' case, a little consideration over his history, would show how far from a winner would be his name on the presidential ticket. And in State matters, there is ever the sentiment that a defeated candidate ought'to be given important considera tion, not on account , of personal fitness, but as a balm for wounded feelings re ceived through defeat in a previous election. The Idea is too prevalent that public office Is a sort of consolation prize for the vindication of some prominent man, who may have received some Injustice or affront. .' . Or because of some defeat, the candi date losing must become a political in valid, to receive as his just reward fu ture nominations until elected, is most absurd and Irrational reasoning. ),. . Party Interests demand that no warm ed over candidates shall be kept In po litical stock, to be brought forth at every election, when the voter went new goods. And aside from party Interests, both SUte and National affairs cannot be sacrificed to support sentiment and mis guided enthusiasm. '.. -. Inquiry was made directly of Republicans here a to bow on earth Harry Skinner came to be ap pointed district attorney. They say that not only had Senator Pritchard promis ed Skinner the place but the lata Presi dent McKInley had done the same thing McKinlcy knew Skinner in Congress and took a fancy to him. He formed a high opinion of Skinner and had also promised him the place. He had told Skinner the Populist paTty was dead and that the thing for him to de was to get in the Republican ranks. Skinner needed no urging. Inquiry was also made as to how Keith got the collector ship, when Pritchard wanted Slocumb to have It. In was said in reply that the President let it be known that a Wilmington man must have the place; that he had two or three times been rasped by the press for not following this rule. Last Saturday it called on Charles M. BuBbee, as the representative of the sub scribers to the auditorium, and suggest ed that the $7,000 auditorium fund be placed to tho credit of the tobacco mar ket fund, it being very evident that there will be no auditorium.
