Revenue Officers Raid an Illicit Dis
tillery.
The 88th Anaial Session ef State
Dental Society. Report In
the Horace Haywood Pols
ealag Case. Aanaal
Meeting ef Wem
en'a Foreign
Klssloaary
Society.
Raliigb, June 19. The 88lh annual
session of the North Carolina Dental
Society began this morning, Dr. J. 8.
Spurgeon of Hillsboro presiding. Gov
ernor - Ayoock delivered the address of
welcome. The society has 110 members,
of whom 75 are present.
Revenue officers made a raid last night
In Franklin county and captured two Il
licit distilleries:
The penitentiary is this year, for the
first time In 80 years, making no brick.
The brick making never paid well, but
was the best means, it was thought, of
utilizing the labor of certain con
victs. Two weeks ago Horace Haywood, col
ored, and his family, at Garner, this
county, were poisoned. He died,' but
the others have recovered. His stomach
was sent to Chapel Hill and Its contents
analyzed. Today the report on It waa
made to the county. It is that death
was due to Paris green and ground
glass. The analysts cost the county
$100. There Is at least one suspect. Ar
rests may be made in a day or two.
Most of the talk Is about Gov. Ay
cock's proclamation of reward, $100 for
each of the Salisbury lynchers. A state
ment Is made that one of the negro boys
lynched was only 11 years old and had
no hand iu the murder of the young
white woman. A letter from Salisbury
said toughs, concealed in rear lots, were
the people who did the lynching, but it
is also said that this statement was made
to conceal the fact that some prominent
citizens took part In the lynching. Gov.
Ayoock saw Solicitor Hamman Tuesday
The latter is actively collecting Informa
tion. One man was heard to say here
that he believed any person or persons
who betrayed the lynchers would be
murdered. The majority of the better
people deplore the lynching, yet it is
sanctioned by some people. The unthlnk
ing portion of the population opposes
the offer of a reward. It was at first sjald
there weie about 50 of the lynchers.
The State charters the Martin Furni
ture .Co. fit Hickory, capital $50,000,
Thomas J. Martin being the principal
stockholder.
The 24th annual session of the Wo
men's Foreign Mission Society for North

June 19. The crops are looking well
considering the dry weather, corn and
cotton excellent, tobacco Is badly cut off
by dry weather, potatoes are turning out
well and selling well, most everyone ts
satisfied with their sales; grain is not
near what it should be, it was too dry to
head much. Fruit will be scarce this
season on account of dry weather. Crops
as a general thing are clean and In pret
ty good order.
