WUHXJW SMASHED And Goods Stales. Approrei Method U Obtain Articles. The dry goods store of Joseph Roht, Syrian merchant on Broad street, tu broken Into ok Wednesday night, tad sereral pain of shoes, and torn smaller articles taken. The thief need a itone of tlze lafflclent to shatter a pane in one of the show win dows, end It U supposed reached In and took at many articles as he could carry off. Sereral windows hare been broken Into of late, In like manner, and Broad street seems to be a farorlte Held for these depredators. While the amount of goods stolen Is usually of but small ralue, some ralua ble plate windows hare been destroyed and much annoyance caused. The officers of the law appear to meet with no success in apprehending these thleres, nor do they prerent these dep redations. There are many people around town who hare no risible means of support, they toll not at all, but lire apparently well all the while, and the whole town is continually being annoyed by petty thieving. It's up to somebody to sppre- hend the thleres. Patrick's Continuation, Morehead Postmastersnip. 8pL Wash. Cor. Charlotte Obserrer, 8rd T. E. Senator Slmmona today removed the embargo and It is assumed that Daniel Patrick will at once be confirmed as col lector of customs at New Bern. Patrick, while Collector Hahn has not, in the opinion of Senator Simmons, presented any valid reason for further delay. Logs Menace Navigation. The low water that Is now troubling the sailors is not without some advan tage, as men are .enabled to get out the many logs that are In the bottom of the river, These logs are a great peril to navigation and boats have often been stranded on them. While engaged in removing the re mains of an old foundation from the river in the vicinity of the Virginia- Carolina Warehouse, which was Bald to hare been an old .still house, they found a quanlty of logs. They are said to hare been in that position a hundred years and yet they were perfectly sound. They were held together with wooden pins and made a substantial, firm founda tlon; the water covering them with dirt and slime afforded them a good protec tion from destroying elements. The removal of this stuff from the slip where large boats are In the habit of anchoring will prove an Immense ad vantage and It Is to be hoped that when ever the opportunity presents itself that the river will be cleared of these danger our "snags."
