Waterc, Clk Bil Co Com. April 7th lf'J. Report of Grand Jury April Term of Court: New Bern, Craven Couuty, North Caro lina, April 10th, 1903. To His Honor, G. S. Ferguson, Judge presiding: We, The Grand Jury for this term, respectfully beg to submit to the Court the following report of tho servi ces performed by us. W'c have endeavor ed to faithfully follow Instructions. Our duties have been executed to the best of our knowledge and ability. Out of 57 bill Indictments we find 38 true bills, 11 not true bills, 8 continued over for lack of witnesses. We made 14 presentments. We visited the county jail and Inspec ted building and yard, found premises clean and in order. We find 2 windows in south end of building entirely closed by solid Iron shutters, we would advise that these solid shutters be removed and In place of same use Iron grating so as to allow free circulation of air In sum mer and sunlight in the winter. The old wooden floor in building should be replaced by a new one as the present one Is In a bad condition. We also find that a crack in division wall between main jail and outer rooms is unsafe and should be repaired. We would suggest the addition of 4 new Iron cages as they are needed for the safe keeping of prison ers. In the office of Register of Deeds we found every thing in order. We would recommend that the register be allowed to have an old volume of Records, Book No. 6 transcribed, as It is very old and the paper Is rotton and discolored. A new copy would be the means of pre serving the records. We found the Clerk's office In order and well kept. We Inspected the office of Sheriff and found everything in order. Neuse river bridge was examined and it was found that 10 or 19 new planks are needed in floor of bridge, to replace those that are badly worn or rotten, one of which Is so rotten as to be unsafe, the rest of bridge is in good condition. We found on inspection of Trent river bridge that the south end of draw gate Is not safe, aa it cannot be locked. Found 99 rotten or badly worn planks In floor of bridge which we advise replacing with new ones. Railing in bad condi tion in tome places, the platform leading from bridge to keepers' home Is In a dangerous condition. r The county Home was "visited and upon examination was found to be in first-class condition, clean and well-kept the keeper doing all In her power for the comfort of the lnmates, sll of whom say they are well cared for and well fed. We find they are badly crowded, four and iV lvi suus vsviaj tug w ROiUO i IUVU1 the diseased Inmates have to occupy the tame room with those In health. . An 8 room building should be provided at once to meet the needs of the Home ar d , to replace the 2 buildings recently do j stroyed by lire, we would also suggest , that a force pump and hose be addi-d for ! use In case of fire. Wo find Court House bulliltnir and ! grounds well kept ar.d In lirtt-clas j order. F. G. Miti iiem., Foreman Grand Jury. Necessity of Paying To Vote, Poll Tax So Wants Big Pay For Carrjlns Con victs. Free Cigars Kills Com petitor. War Anniversary. Easter Offering. Raleigh, April 13. The Democratic candidate for Mayor of Shelby propounds an Interesting question to the State Auditor. He asks If It is necessary for an elector to have paid his poll tax for 1902 before he can participate In the municipal election this spring. A new registration Is ordored in all towns so that only voters who conform to the new constitutional requirements can vote. The auditor refers tho Shelby can dldate to the Attorney General. N. B. Broughton left last evening for Burlington whoro he spoke last night In the Baptist church, of which Hov. N. S. Jones Is pastor, on "The Sunday School and the Evangelization of the World." Tomorrow night Gov Aycock will speak in the same church on "Education and the Kvangellzatlon of the World. Judge Thos. R. Purnell and family have returned from a visit to New York. Today, April 13th, just 38 years ago Sherman's army entored Raleigh. The older citizens all remember this anni versary. It was just such a rainy day as this. The L O'B. Branch Camp of Confed erate Veterans here will send their drum corps to the reunion In New Orleans next month. About eight will attend from Raleigh. The sheriff of Cherokee brought three convicts to tho penitentiary and he sends the State Auditor a bill for $152.30 for this. Of course such a sum Is entire ly too much and will not l;e allowed. The sheriff of Guilford reports that his collection of 1902 btato taxes are $27,420.84 gross Of wlileli the auto iielB $25,900.57. This Is $2,000 more than the previous year. The Supreme Court will take up 12th district appeals tomorrow. Owing to the competition of the American Cigar Company the only cigar factory hero Intends going out of business. Tho trunt has been distribut ing 6,000 cigars here freeand is givng a bonus to purchasers of their goods. Dr. Egbort Smith of Greensboro will preach the commencement sermon at Peace Institute May 17th. Yesterday at the Eastor service $900. was raised on the building fund of the Church of the Good Shepherd. This will be ono of the handsomest churches In the State when completed. CASTOR I A For Infants and Children. The Kind You Have Always Bought - Bears the Signature of HORRIBLE HOLOCAUST. A Lamp Explosion Destroys a Dwelling and Kills Two Children. The home of Green G II at sell at Wards Mill, Onslow county, was destroyed by fire last Friday night and two children, a boy aged eleven years and a girl of two years were burned to death. The accident was caused by the explo sion of a lamp which the boy had just filled. The lamp overran and the oil spread over the table. The boy in strik ing a match to light the lamp ignited the oil which caused the explosion. Five children were alone In the house at the time, the father having gone fish' lng and the mother having stepped over to a neighbor's a short distance to carry some medicine for a sick person. While at the house she heard the exploBlon, but before she could return the front part of the house was a seething mass of flames into which no one could enter without almost certain death. Another sad circumstance about the accident is that Mrs Hatsell may not re cover. When she saw the destruction of her home and learned of the fate of her two children she fainted away and had not regained consciousness up to a late hour yesterday. Her condition is ex tremely critical. Mr J O Littleton and son who j live near by were attracted by the noise and light and hastened to the house and got three children eut but not before they were badly scorched. Both Mr Littleton and his son escaped with only a few burns. All that could be found of the two children were the bones which were bur led Sunday.
