Some four years ago I was Buffering from impure blood and a general run down condition of the system. I had no appetite-, was losing flesh, and had an all gone tired feeling, that made me misera ble. I began the use of S . S. I expect, Mr. Editor, many of your readers do not known there Is such a town in the old ctouth State as Luken, but we have a lively little town of about 800 Inhabitants situated on South river in Caneret County, thirty-five miles from New Bern by water in the midst of - a number of seal! fertile farmers. The town was started about three years ago, when the PamHoo Lumber Com pany built a raw mill, store and a num ber of other bulldiogs. v Tbe mlil was run for two years, but has been shot down for a year, whlchhas caused business to be dull, It bat f Urt ed up again and' the second mill will soon be bulk with a capacity of forty thousand feet of lumber per diy. and a railroad Is toon to be built from here to Beaufort, the rolling stock and rails have been b ught for It We now have a boat which makes one trip a week from New Bern, and as basinets snd the pi pulatlon increase which we look for ward to, at an rarly date the boat will make two-to three trips a weak. . We have a dally mall. - Several fatnilfea have recently moved In. Mr. H. V. Case and family from Ft. He will mive In his new house In a few dayp. At the first meetlrg tbe subject for discussion was, ''Is the Equator vijlblt?" Mr. Simpson foimerly of New Bern took the afferma tlve and Mr. Yi nker formerly of PhiU- delphla took the nega'lve.'thedlecostlon was quite lengthy and Interesting. Mr. Simpson contended that be had sailed around tbe world twice and crossed the Fqmtor ten times and had seen It every time and kcew that the color was bine, but notwithstanding his positive asser tions the judges decided It to be an Ima ginary line In favor of Mr. Tonker. Mr, Yonker is a eucceisful merchant. and farmer here snd has formed a strong attachment for his borne on South river so much that be has not been from home In three years. It ia Ta fact a serious situation, bnt nevertheless we cannot hetp being amused at the present situa tion. Mr. H.nes acknowledges that he was one of the many business men along the line of the road who favored the lease. The News and Observer files will show tbat the Interviews published Just previous to the lease was largely In favor of the lease of the road. A few of us were opposed, we thought all could foresee the piesent situation. . . The writer tor one, could not under stand how any business man or property owner could favor a lease of the road, woen we were geuing mcroatou '- ties for business, thousands of dollars expended annually for labor, and most i everything which was reasonable which we asked for, In our btUlucs! relation' with the road. It seems to the writer, that it Is now rather too la'e for kicking snd tbat our case is similar to the n an who thought Of puttiog the peg in the stable door after he found that his horse was out. There Is not much sentiment In business, and any one who has met Mr; Howland would surely be Impressed that he ii a man of business, snd no' much sentiment. Mr. Howland saa that this road was a good thit g to have, and In a business like way cb.ained It He secured the sid of the most Influen tial stock bolder, h3 secured the cod 11 dence of the Governor and also secured for his attorneys an ex-Governor, ao x-candidate for Governor and the nio-l .Influential lawyers and politicians of the State. He found the people of the State anr! the leading newspapers ready and anx ious for a ieste and the work was eaell accomplished. Sure y thle- is the bett of ev'donce to out before th - i leglsla are acd the lease will be ratified by a la-g majority, so whs.t Is the me of kicking? Tbe only satisfaction we who opposed the lease will have, is "I told you so." It stems to me that all these mass meet ings, all of these abutive editorials and squibs In our papers do ns more harm than good. , Mr Howlsnd and his asso ciate lave leased the road for ninety-one ears, which is about as long as any of os will have any nse for It, why not give them the "glad hand'' now and try and nuke the best of it?
