A novel method for increasing the usefulness of lumber baa been perfect. ed in England. The method ' consists, in brief. In replacing the air in wood with a solution of beet sugar and re moving the excess of water by a subse quent drying. The Inventor of the pro cess, Mr. Powell, attains his object by using a large boiler m which the- tim ber to be treated is placed and the beet sugar solution pumped in. After the air has all been replaced by the solution the wood is kiln dried. Examination of the wood seems to show that the sugar is absorbed into the fibre of the woody tissue and is not simply held in the in tercellular spaces. It is claimed that timber treated in this way is no longer porous, will not shrank or warp, and la stronger, heavier and more durable, Moreover, it is said that this wood is not liable to dry rot; t la hoped that by mixing the proper poisons with the sugar both the wood will be made resistant to the attacks of unfgi and insects. All who become members of this church must solemnly subscribe to these tenets. ; They are as follows. i 1. As adherents of Truth, we take the inspired Word of the Bible as our sufficient guide to eternal Life, We acknowledge and adore one su- preme and infinite God, we acknowl ,dge one Christ hw Son, Christ Jesua; the Holy Ghost or divine Comforter: and man as His image and likeness, 3. We aknowledsre God's fortriveness 0f sin in the destruction' of sin, and the spiritual undenstanding that evil is un I real.hence not eternal. Rut the belief m sin is punished so long as it lasts. wy w acknowledger Jesusatone ment as the evidence of divine, effica- cious Love, unfolding man's unity with God through Christ Jesus the Way shower. , 5. We acknowledge that man is saved through Christ, through Truth, Life and Love as demonstrated by the Galli- lean Prophet in the healing of the sick na" the overcoming of sin and death. Also, that the crucifixion of Jesus and h8 resurrection served to elevate faith nd understanding to perceive eternal Life the allness of Spirit and the noth ingness of matter. 6. We solemnly promise to strive, watch and pray for that Mind to be in I us wnicn was aiso .in unrist jesus; 10 ve one another, and to be meek, mer- ciiui, iusi ana pure. Copyrighted and used by permission of Reverend Mary Baker G. Eddy, the author.) ; I will say with reference to the third tenet that the sense in which evil is here defined to be unreal is briefly this, that it is not created by God. Mrs Eddy 1. the author of these ten- eua. rto one can reau uiura witnoui DB- coming aware that every person who subscribes to them adopts the Bible as his guide and as the Word or Uod. . It cannot therefore, be truthfully charged I that Christian Scientists are unbeliev- era m the scnpuires. ine tact is,tney are ardent believers in the Bible, read- ing and studying it daily and making it their constant companion. An intclli- gent perusal or these tenets leadesto the following clear deductions: The absolute supremacy of God; the divinity. of the Christ; that there is but one Christ; the forgiveness of sin through the aestruciion 01 sin; tne atonement for sin and all of its consequences througn unity wan uoa the r ather; in other words, through obedience 1 1 i..t -i. ma uivitm mw, buivuuuh num sin, sick nMS tint! dl lllh. that. thlH S.llvnrinn free to all; that the spiritual man, God s universal and eternal son, occu pies a relationship to God that can never ,.f 41.... - !..i: u: hi biij u uc ni-iino vi. mui. i eiuiiofiKiiip be severed or di-Htroyed; that this man a Cod's :',e and likeni--e can no y ; r. re le (1 'rin d t! im c-a God him l"1' ';i ;tiM .snmncnnlil of the meaning of there words, and the declaration of Genesis that God made man in His 'own image and likeness would hence be a falsity. ; ; LEAD A CHRISTIAN LIFE. . ; The sixth and last tenet comprehends all the proceeding tenets. The solemn admonition to strive and pray for the Mind of Christ is a call to live the high est possible Christian life. He who attains to that attitude of living where in he has in him the same Mind that was in Christ Jesua is surely a Chris tian. He who earnestly strives and prays for that Mind is surely, to-that extent, and in that sense, leading a Christian life, though he may yet have to travel a long way before reaching the high goal. Step by step he may cli Jib the ladder whose top; marks the full measure of the stature of manhood in' Christ Jesus. ; ' ' ' - L This tenet is a restatement in almost exact words' of Paul's injunction to the Phillipians, wherein ' he commanded them to have in themselves' the t same Mind that was also in Christ Jesus. . ; HEALING TAUGHT BY JESUS. - : I now wish to speak of Jesus' teach ing with reference to healing sickness. He sent forth the twelve to preach and to heal the sick. He gave thejn-A com-' mandment, called by some, . Bible com mentators his Great Commission; . 7? 'in Matthew x:, this commandment is thus recorded: ,,,;., , ! ' 'Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans en ter ye not; but go rather to the . lost sheep of the house of Israel. " And as ye go preach saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. , Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils; freely ye have received, freely give. ' I "Provide neither gold, nor silver, nor brass in your purses. ,. ' "Nor script for your journey, neither two coats, neither shoes, nor yet staves for the workman is worthy of big meat." V- ' - mi . ' , . ' . . inis commandment is a unit. It is not two commandments. There is in this language no warrant for any ; at tempt to separate the commandment by declaring that the part relating to preaching was to be perpetuated, but the part relating to healing the sick was to be put aside, as having reference on ly to the time in which, and those to whom, it was given. 'After His resur rection and just before his ascension, Jesus gave to the same disciples to whom he gave his first great command ment (excepting 'Judas Iscariot, Who had betrayed him), a, final command ment This constitutes -the two- last verses of the book of Matthew: - "U0 ye tnererore, and teach all na tions, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost . "Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you; and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto theendof the world," - HEALING THE SICK IMPERATIVE. ' This language is broad and unquali fied. It comprehends all the command ments previously given to his disciples, and this, of course, includes his first great commandment ' According to Mark's Gospel, he commands his dis ciples to preach this gospel to "every creature." -This is a plain and unmis takable direction or instruction. Let me plainly ask: When was it ever re pealed, countermanded, qualified, . or changed in any manner by Jesus or any one else of those having biblical author ity to teach or preach?-Where is the record thereof ? We declare, therefore on the most explicit biblical authority that the part of the great command ment relating to healing the sick was as imperative as that pertaining to preaching. Healing sickness is, then an essential and indispensable part of Christ's gospel No right exists for the effort to put aside Jesus' commandment to heal the sick and to heal according to his teachings and his methods -of heal ing, without drugs, surgery or any ma terial remedies or appliances. The same divine power that healed in Jesus' time 'heals today, bo far as it is understood u'.nil mmMtnoA "' ThflrA in knt An. Tviifl. r----- - , . . .. Trnth r. ..u.nl. self from the world. The physical healing of Christian Science results now, as in Jesus' time from the operation of divine Principle, before which sin and disease lose their reality in human consciousness and so disappear as naturally and necessarily as darkness gives place to light and sin to reformation. Now, as then, His mighty works are not supernatural but supremely natural. They are the sign of Immanuel, or God with us a divine influence ever present in human con sciousness and repeating itself coming now again as was promised aforetime.
