S. Basnight was entirely con- sumed by fire. . Notwithstandiug it was severe loss to Mr.. Basnight, his in domitable energy would not allow him to be discouraged and he began plans at ' once that would result in a still larger plant . : .V v i- ' - Capitalists from the north became in .. terested and on September 6th a charter was granted to the New Bern Lumber , Company with an authorized capital of $125,000 , - -s ' :. r.-.;: Since that time active preparations have been in progress to rebuild the burned plant, or in other words to build , a new one. for when completed it will : be one of New Bern's largest enter ; prises. The plant is located on the site of Mr " Basnight's burned mill, and is in James City, on the waterside just about where the Treut river empties into the ,, Neuse. The frame for the mill proper is being 1 - raised, but the magnitude of the plant .' can only be realized by a perusal of the plans. , ' - A nest of four boilers will generate a six hundred horse power of steam, ... while the machinery will be driven by .' a five hundred horse power, four valve, Atlas engine of the latest make. .-' The mill will be what is known as a '- "double circular mill" and will occupy k a building 48 by 120 feet, two floors, all 1 : the machinery is of the latest improved patents. . There will also be a spacious four-room dry kiln, built of brick. Wharves will be built along the water side extending to the channel and an immense storage horse capable of holding one million feet of lumber will be erected on piles over the water ; The company will put in ten or more miles of steam tram road, right away, and will also lay a spur of track con necting their mill with the A. & N. C road. This will give them transporta tion eitner by rail or on the water by barge or sail vessel. , . :. STARTLING BUT TRUE. " IV: la the world over were horrified on learning of the burning of a Chica . go theater, in which nearly six hundred people lost their lives, yet more than five times this number or over 30,000 people died from pneumonia in Chicago ; during the same year, with scarcely a passing notice. Every one of these cases of pneumonia resulted from a co'J and could have been prevented by , the use of Chamberlain's Cough Reme dy. A great Wny who had every rea son to fear pneumonia have warded it oft by the prompt use of this remedy, The following is an instance of this sort: "Too much cannot be said in ; favor of Chamberlain's Cough Remedy, and e ; t 'u'i!y for colds and influenza. Thomas Jefferson's Umbrella. Jerome Eddys Weekly Squib has this good story to relate of , Thomas Jeffer son who plays Rip Van Winkle., here March 9. v ':'f .-; ; Thomas Jefferson, the son of Joseph Jefferson happened in New York one day and called upon an old friend, an Alderman. During the call an Italian couple came and asked if the Alderman would unitethem tin maraiage. . The Alderman performed the ceremony, and after accepting.liis fee politely handed to the bride an umbrella. , v. Mr. Jefferson eyed the r proceedings gravely, and after the couple went out asked: "Do youalways do that, Charles?' "Do what? Marry them?.Oh," yes." 'No; I mean bestow a present upon the bride" "A present! Why, wasn't that her umbrella?" gasped the alderman. "No, it was mine, replied Mr. Jeffer son, sadly. Editor Journal. .: In view of a recent juvenile escapade of local occurrence,-1 which, owing to parental activity, was deplorably short lived, the following storiette from the San Francisco Aagonant may appeal to those of your readers who. are blessed with a sense of humor, and furnish a hint to parents whose boys are pining for the freedom of the forest. . He was ten years old and when he slipped out of the house at daylight he left a note for his mother saying he was going West to fight Indians. A discouraging combination of cir cumstances, in which hunger, weari ness and fear all played a part, made him think better of it, and he returned to the parental root at 9.30 p. m. He was not received with open arrrs Indeed, the family met him with cold ness. The clock ticked, his father read his newspaper; his big sister studied in silence; ever his mother didn't seem to care whether he cartie iback or not Nicodemus, the cat, not being in the secret got up and rubbed himself ca ressingly against the culprit's leg. He stooped to pick him up, and then, with a last desperate attempt to start the ball of conversation, he demanded homesick ly: "Is this the same old cat you had when I went away?', J. L. K.
