The first game of lase ball played here this season re sulted in a victory for the home team, winning from Maple Grave by a score of 4 to 3. ; :i : : V The game was very snappy from be ginning to end, neither side being able to score before the sixth inning and then only on an error of the pitchrr. The features of. the gamerere the pitching of Gatlin and a brilliant run ning catch made by Jones in left field, also the support given Gatlin by Bland behind the bat deserves mention, he being there with the goods on all oc casions. Notwilhstandig the disadvantage of the wet ground, and of course, the wat er soaked ball there" was a finely played game of baseball at Blades Park yester day between the Lima and New, Bern teams. It was close and naturally the interest kept up until the end: The Lima players demonstrated -one thing:,' although they canje from a rural community they know how to play ball and untie stand the science as well as anybody. Their pitcher, Perry, who did some Very creditable work in - the box quit in the fifth inning and was' re placed by Bland who was more clever. Bland bad a drop delivery which was commented on .very favorably. . The catcher was a brother ftf the pitcher Bland who held his position very well. In-addition to their even playing and freedom from costly errors those tf the New Bern team who distinguished them selves were Arnold in a difficult catch in the field; Armstrong, work ' behind the bat and at the, bat; McSorley as short Btop. Tucker, first baseman did excellent work at his position and he also did some good stunts at the bat. John Patterson maintained his ' reputa tion as a pitcher admirably. ; f The crowd was not large, perhaps there was good reason for it but it is very discouraging to announce a ball game and go to considerable expense to get a team here and then have only a handful of spectators, , There is always a lack of enthusiasm too which makes the players indifferent, Consequently it can easily be seen'' that very often the cause of rocky games of ball comes from these conditions. It is expected that there will be some fine 'games of ball in the near future and we hope the boys will be encouraged by the present e of a good erowiL , - Following is the score by Innings: . Ida Tarbell today, in a telegram to a local news paper, replied to John D. Rockefeller's defense of his business methods, made by bis attorney, Virgil Kline. Her state ment says in part: . "I accuse Mr. Rockefeller not of breaking the law, or even the rules of business as they seem to be interpreted by many men in business- I judge him by the golden rule, and I claim Mr. Rockefeller himself gives me the right to use that rule in estimating his char acter. J 1 . - . "He presents himself to the public i) only two phases, as the richest man in the world and as an active adherent of the Christian church. , If Mr. Rocke feller did not and had not all his life publicly declared that the church and the Bible were the most precious things in his life I should hesitate to apply the golden rule to the Corrigkn case. .': As it is, I claim that I have tha right. '- ' ;. "I see nothing in What Mr. Kline ha? written to make me change what I wrote in summing up the case in ques tion. Mr. Rockefeller's practice, mu tual helpfulness has nothing to do with trace. Might makes 'mistakes right; not generosity, ; not justice, ,not hu manity. It is a far cry indeed from this creed to the one of that religion which Mr. Fockefeller hold3 up to the world as his most priceless possession the religion whose very essence is bear ing 'one another's burdens." One Dollar Saved Represents Ten Dollars Earned.' The average man does not save to ex ceed ten per cent of his earnings. He must spend nine dollars in living ex penses for every dollar saved. J"hat being the case he cannot be too careful about' unnecessary expenses. Very often a few cents properly invested, like buying seeds for his garden, will save several dollars outlay later on. It is the same in buying Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy It costs but a few cents, and a bottle of it in the bouse often saves a doctor's bill of several dollars. For sale by F. S. Miss Lillian Scott, who lives with Mr. Alexander Brinkley, at 165 Broad street is the young lady upon whom the unpleasant notoriety has been cast. The Journal reporter called at her home yesterday and got from '. her an abso lute denial V of any knowledge of Fred E Carlton not having remember ed to have ever heard his name before and she-is at a loss to. know how he came by her name unless it was through a magazine as she had at one time sent an answer to a puzzle published in the magazine.
