He seems so much exercized by Senator Simmon'B idea that "Butler is the Republican leader that he as serts (Junior Solomon like) "that as Democratic leader Ex-Gov. Ay cock is the man." In most sections the rains were excessive, causing the creeks to ovei flow their banks, and thereby damaging an immense amount of crops in the low lands. : lieaulort ana Dare counties in the eastern district, however, report that rain is needed in some sections, There were a great many local showers and crops are reported to be in fine condition in many sections of the east ern district In the central district, mrn and cotton was much damaged in the, lowlands, and in fact all crops were injured r.ither than benefitted by the rains of the past week. Heavy winds with I ail were reported from many sec tions in the west and central portions of the State doing a great deal of dam age to all crops and fruit Cotton has been improved to some ex tent by the rain, but almost aTTsections report that it is shedding. The wet weather has caused rank growth.-' In Johnson county, rust on cotton is report ed to be the most destructive ever known; no rust reported in- the east; a few reports of rust in the west In the east tobacco curing is comple ted, except in Hertford county, and in Nash County it is being marketed. In the central and west portions of . the State tobacco is not . so far advanced although some report- curing all done. Some tobacco in Johnston county is be' ginning to fire at . the bottom of the plants, and it is thought that it wil have to be cut sooner than desired.
