Passing Of An Old Landmark. The old hickory tree in the Christ church yard is doomed. The main limb fell down yesterday from its own weight, old age and decay had done their work. The rest of the tree is ' now a menace aud the limbs should be cut down before it breaks and does great damage. The Iree is aft old land mark; its age antedates the hiatoiy of New Bern and under its shade have rested and studied some of - the Old North State's most famous men. It was one of two of the original forest trees within the city limits, the other being the fine old cypress in Mr. S. W. Smallwood's yard. v - As much as possible of the old tree should be saved and it would be a good plan to have the trunk nerve as a poit over which to train an ivey vine and it would make a beautiful ornament Calilce.v - .
