Lane (By J. V. Williams) To the New Bern Journal: I note with much sorrow the sudden death of my old friend and brother, ex sherill W. B. Lane. His noble life was a benediction to friends and neighbors. An old soldier, who served his coun try well, and who loved tenderly his old comrades. The intimacy between the late Capt Hardy B. Lane and myself seemed to draw sheriff Lane toward me. Only a few days ago I wa3 in New Bern attending the Stuart meet ings and met sheriff Lane on the street He was just from the church where he had heard Stuart and the light in his face showed the glow in his heart. "Been to the meeting!" said I, "Yes" said he, "IIo's great. " And then he said "Weil, Williams your old friend Hardy is gone."
