V. ax seoond-chuiB mutter. New Bern, N. C, Jan. 80. 1906. EDUCATION AND ITS ASSOCIATES Getting an education ought to be ore than the acauirement of the knowledge of books, just the learning which gives its possessor the ability to read the signs which shall make . the daily life one different from that of he putely Illiterate person. There are many young persor s who go beyond this mere knowledge of books, whose parents and guardians 1 ice the m in the way t f acquiring an education, which shall make them self providers, therefore useful to the world, and beyond this, even, they have acquired a knowledge which right ly employed, means a special value to their community. , It is not simply learning, but its rightful application which means every- thine to its possessor, and those With whom this possessor of a good educa tion comes in contact. Every youth ought to have the kind of education which enables the individual self- examination, to detect any flaw, and : correct it, so that the individual may have a clear perception and be able to skilfully associate with the education gained, self-reliance, self-respect and personal usefulness, for with these goes the ability to earn a satisfactory live lihood, and prove a valued member of any community. ( In this day and age, the importance of an education which embraces thorough manual training, ought not to be overlooked or under estimated by parent . and guardian, for the young man or woman with such a '. manual training, cannot make a failure in life, unless through personal , wilful The value of a manual training of the youth of either sex, proves the need of such a course of education in every - school, public and private, so that may not be out of the reach of any child, and all friends and supporters of education should use their influence establishing manual training branches in every school, so that no child may grow up and go forth to do battle in the world, without some knowledge of trade which can be employed to secure livelihood, and such a trade learned, that the person shall find it of a char acter that is suitable, that is a profes sion or trade that is congenial as possi ble, therefore inspiring to the worker, for congenial work is not hard work, and nearly every person may find a life work that means not slave work, for work, however, hard is easily endured, if the worker takes int rest in ft. A PANACEA FOR EARTHLY TROU BLES. In an age like the present, when the pendency is to go at once to what may appear the root of every trouble, it is nst surprising that wild theories are proposed, and in some quarters accept ed as a sure panacea for existing hu man troubles. . : ' Dr. Osier proposed that all men of sixty years be chloroformed. - To this has been added the propositions to chloroform all habitual criminals; the incurably insane; sufferers from incura ble diseases; all afflicted children, and atkled to this list with equal propriety might be named habitual drunkards r.d cigarette smokers. Tie main iiloa in all this, is the put 1 ,r out of the world, putting into 1' ir graves, those persons who are ..:y a J v.; mcura- imi-e to Taker, or who are a . ,,t 1 I re; St i:i tached to the newspapers which advance morbid questions is no small one, as Bryan said . , ' ; . Tis strange the mind, that very fiery particle, Should let itself be snuffed out by an article," ; but the peril is there, for beyond ..dis pute is the hypnotic influence of a' sen sational press, which works upon minds that become receptive to propositions which might appear merely as sugges tive of humor, but which are taken and thought over from a serious point of view, until people come to look upon the advisability of artificially ending life as no crime, but rather the correct thing, when life may be afflcted in it self, or has become a burden to others, and either through chloroform or some other means, life is destroyed, and the supposed panacea of trouble secured. EXCUSES FOR ACCEPTING EVILS If special thought or attention is given to it, the investigator will be surprised to note the number and char acter of excuses made for every day vices, and further the persons who will offer, or at least accept excuses, for indulgence of vices. '? ;'; ':J. Probably greatest or all is the vice of liquor drinking. The average per son, and this includes professing Chris tians, will declare it to be a necessary evil, as though any evil could be so- classed. But as necessary, which means that drinkers are always provided with excuses, the sale of liquor has possibly as Btrong advocates in its favor among those jwho are church members, as may be found outside of the church. Those who will favor high license or dispensary, - will argue that, men are going to drink whiskey, and such being the case, why do they not get the local benefit from the vice, as to permit or force the whiskey drinker to send away, and give the outsider the benefit of the trade? On its face it looks plaus ible, but at best it is only an excuse for accepting an evil, and giving it so-called respectible recognition. The young man is excused if he wishes to sow his "wild oats," as the crop is called. The fact that char acter may receive a stain which may never be wiped out, that a sin may be come so fastened, that it cannot be shaken off, that passions may be cul tivated to grow a crop that can never be harvested and destroyed, these are all excused by really well meaning- peo ple, and yet those who may so lightly excuse the follies of young manhood, will at the same time acknowledge the evils of them, the dangers that follow in their pathway, dangers which often lead to quick destruction. It is this too easy offering excuses for every vices, and the equally easy ac ceptance of evil, where it does not ap pear to injure anyone, except the per son entering upon it, creates evil, when instead all vices should be boldly de clared evil, and inimical to man and so ciety, therefore dangerous to accept in any degree, if such a course should be pursued, then the world is likely to grow better, and. the -so-called little vices will be checked, and prevented from developing into evils which ruin men and work destruction upon society. Dsatnett Canno Be Cures' by local applications, as they cannot reach the diseased portion of the ear. There is only one way to cure deafness and that is by constitutional remedies. Deafness is caused by an inflamed con dition of . the mucuous lining of the Eustachian Tube. When this tube is infiamed you have a rumbling sound or imperfect hearing, and when it is en tirely closed. Deafness is the ; result and unless the inflammation can Le taken out and this tube restored to its ' -mal condition, hearing will be de uyed forever; nine cases out of ten are caused by Catarrh, which is noth ing but an inflamed condition; of th mucous surf aces J . We will give One Hundred Dollars for any case of Deafness (caused by catarrh) that cannot be cured by Hall's Catarrh Cure. Send for circulars, f r ee F. J. CHENEY & CO., Toledo, O.
