''The Joys of Motherhood" published in the Sunday Journal awakened no re sponse in my heart save pity for the children and husband and contempt for such a mother as "K." plainly pictures herself to be. . v . ; t V . . How', can we mothers hope to train our children - for noble manhood and womanhood if we are Continually be wailing our lot as "K" seems to be, and not content with spoiling the hap piiv rs of our own home, we must needs fiu' li.-ih our wrongs in the columns of the unday Journal, in the hope of striking "an answering chord in the hf art of as many discontented women " we can. -: Being blessed with littles, of my own who are not yet of school age.every day is Saturday with us and not being bless ' d (?) with either cook or nurse, the meals are to cook, and children to care for on bright as wel as stormy days, tut with the help of God and a good huhbarid I am trying to train them to be a help instead of a hindrance, and hen they are old enough to go to school I am sure I shall look foiward to Saturday as a- day of- .pleasure and rest, and not a taste of .'the other place1' ,as ''K" seems do. : . Sunday was but a continuation of Saturday's storm, but for, the sake of "KV- husband and children, we will hope the cook came to prepare the meals,' and the nurse to care for the children yes,, and to kiss them too, as we see; so many of them do so that the poor mother was left entirely care-free to hold her hands, walk the streets, at tend a club meeting, or anything else be may have had the energy left from her Saturday's toil, to do. My own little nes are often very trying (and what b althy boy or girl ia i.ot noipy and naughty tat timft), but when the day is er.dtd, and they, tired out with play and helping mother, give father and mother a good-night kiss, never forgetting to add "this has been such a nice day, or to end their evening prayer with "God make me a good lit tle boy," my few cares are as speedily forgotten, and through the prayer ut tered by their lips , mother ia given strength for the work of another day. Every woman has the power to make of her home a heaven on earth, and I have little patience with the mother whose sole idea of heaven is an escape from hell of her own making here be low. 1 :- r " One who is proud to sigh herself. A SOUTHERN MOTHER. T Lt-.ir - - ! i .t v I t Memor am, I feel it my duty to express my hea fe'.t mpathy for the departure of a dear f rind of mine, Mr L H French, who died in Carteret county. I shall also say not cly do I mean a friend of' mine alone, but a loving friend to all that knew hira. I have known him from youth and when grown we were never, too far apart to gee and visit each other, and never could I say that I have had more pleasure at any place than I had when I was in his residence which was six milei from New Bern in . Craven county. He married - Julia Mcllwean. the accomplished daughter of the late Franklin and Julia Mcllwean of New Bern, and she also being very -wealthy which caused ouid helped them to live happy together. i It was his kind and helpful ways which caused him to lose his wealth, but he was always honored by his chil dren and all who knew him. About three years ago he moved to Carteret county to live with his youngest son Mr.' L. I French. Often has he re lieved the suffering of the poor by giv ing them homes, they could stay with their' own dear ' families; he was also ready to give good advice both kind and legal as he was a well read gentleman. He held different offices and has been Justice of the Peace for over 30 years of his life. He has left us all now to pay the debt that we will all pay and I deeply sympathize with his bereaved family, Written by a Craven County Friend.
