THE TEDIOUSNESS OF LAW COURTS
The adjustment of civil actions be
tween persons, and between persons
and corporal ions must forever continue,
but there ought to be with the growth
of the work of the Superior courts,
methods devisi '. which shall prove some
relief to tho-ewho need the court to
solve eivil actions for them, instead of
making it an extra expense and bur
den for litigants.
The law's delay is often attributed
to the Judge and lawyers, the first as
being over conservative, hence assent
ing to technicalities, which lawyers
whose personal interests may be best
served by delays and continuances, or
whose clients will pay largest fees,
if their cases shall be continued until
they have worn out their opponents
through harassment and costs.
The solution is not an easy one, for
who shall impute unfairness to the
Judge, who may spend seemingly extra
time on cases, or can the plea be made
against the lawyer, for unjustngss,
who serves his client, even if the course
pursued be one of dilatoriousness ?
However this may be, the present
Superior courts do not offer the relief
uemanuea, or serve tneir full purposes.
The Superior court of Craven county,
which has just ended its two weeks
ternrv finished perhaps one-tenth or one
" twelfth of the cases on its calendar
This left a huge preponderance of cases
to be continued, a large number liti
gants to pay additional costs for wit
nesses and lawyers, at the same time
leaving these litigants in uncertainty
if even the next court will find their
cases far enough advanced to receive
a good satisfactory trial. It is not to
be presumed that Craven county suf
fers more' than others, for the hard'
ship is to be found In other counties,
but thero Bhould be soma remedy, for
with the prcaont delayB, many honest
persons, with the cases of the utmost
importance to them are either kept
" out of court, because of the extreme
" uncertainty of gettirt.r a hearing within
any rfixed time or if their cases got
placed on the calendar, they can be do-
layed and kept from trial, until the
' costs drivs thetn nwa.v, to accept, pas
sively,
the injustice and wrong done
them.

Death of Fred. G. Land.
After a distressing sickness lasting
eleven days, Mr. Fred. G. Land, son of
James K. and Alice Land, died shortly
before noon yesterday. He had suf
fered an attack of typhoid-pneumonia
of the most virulent typo and although
he was a strong and vigorous young
man he was unable to throw off the
terrible disease.
Fred was born in Arapahoe, Pamlico
county, severteen years ago,, but has
Leen a resident of New Hern most of
his life. A strange and sad coincident
is that his disease und death were very
similar tc--that of Wade Ind, his cou
sin, who died in April, and to whom he
was very much attached,, the two being
nearly the same age. He was an ir
du8trious,Bteady and reliable young
man and had a' host of friends who

An Appeal For Aid
To the Public :
My Dear Friends 1 am compelled to
ask you for some assistance on the new
church house of worship which is now
in course of erection for the Cedar
Grove Baptist church congregation on
Cypress street above Burn, opposite
the colored cemetery. Already more
than 100,000 bricks have been or

brick work is about half finished. The
men, 22 in number, are still at work
and we hope to keep them there till the
building is finished and ready for use.
I am this week, asking all of the best
and liberal hearted citizens of this
town to give donations to help the work
along. I shall be very glad if you will
give something to the chnrch work
either to some of those who are can
vassing the city this week or send it
directly to this office. The donations
may be given in material or cash as
the giver may elect.
Thanking you for your favor in ad

Is there not some way that the city
officials can be interested in the welfare
of the stav-at-homea during the sum
mer months, in arranging a series of
-oneerts. by the Knights of Pythias
Band? The writer has no doubt what
ever that the business men as well as
the citizens of New Bern would gladly
contribute to this movement, bearing
in mind that the proceeds go for a good
cause. It looks like pity that a city
the size of New Bern, cannot have
something that would make the long
evenings of summer go by pleasantly,
when they have such a good band at
their disposal, and I am certain that if
concerts were arranged for two nights
in the week that they would be appre
ciated by everyone.
