The beast of the field, no matter how green the grass in its own pasture, looks beyond the fence, and strives to get into the road or the field outside, thinking the grass there is better and richer. To man, it is the something from which he is barred, that promotes de sires, and urges effort to secure the ob ject. If the object be of the world, of pleasure alone to the animal nature of man, like the beast in the field, the at tainment ia most likely to lead not to better things, but to hardship, first in the sttiving, and disappointment in that the pasture new was not as fresh and rich in its resources, as it looked beyond the fence. Looking beyond present conditions, seeking better ones is worthy of man, and it is the man of purpose who so looks, but not until there is a complete mastery of the field this side of the fence. TRUS1S AND GOVERNMENT TO DO ALL BUSINESS The protectiveness of the tariff sys tem has reiehed such an absolute ex treme, that even the Federal govern ment seeks protection, judging from the President, who asks that the pub lic coal lands be held, and worked, fr the government's use, if the coal trust shall show any intention of advancing prices of coal. And if the government shall operate its own coal mines, make its own ce ment, gun powder and build its own warships, as it is now doing, why not continue its construction and manu factory process, and make everything that enters into the n; eds of the peo ple? The fact is that the government on one side, and the trusts ontheother, offer nothing to the average iiealer anil manufacturer, except to get out of business, or if important enough, get under the shelter of a trust, and draw pay for being good and quiet. That the tariff system is abnormal, is to be plainly seen by this suggested government operation of its coal fields. What w auoh a tariff, anyway, but a menace to the people, and that the sys tem is no longer needed, and even more, the government seeks to perpe tuate it, not that it assists the people, but the government attempts to shield itself, by going into business on a huge scale, while the small manufacturers must go out of business and the con sumers must be ground down to keep rich the trusts. A tariff system which protects a class to its continual enrichment, and calls for the government to go into business to protect itself against the extortion of the trusts, ought to be retired. That socialism is increased by an unreason -able tariff system needs no explanation and that the present tariff means that the trusts and the government between them will do all the business, unless the system be abolished, needs no ex haustive demonstration. This Ceuntry will go to the Dsmnltion Bow This dry weather will be the ruin ation bf the farmers if it continues much longer. Already the potato crop is damaged fifty per cent. The fact that there is a short acreage of the cop and consequently it being expected that high prices will result will not avail 'or the sustained loss. The Journal communicated with some of the leading truckers yesterday, Messrs. W. K Crockett, W. H. Bray and W. C. Willett anil each one report ed that the condition was very bad-and unless rain should fall within a very few days the crop would be utterly worthless. This damage, of course, does not af fect the potato crop alone but the Bean yield which is one of the best crops the truckers handte.bolh as to production and as to the financial returns of if. The damage on beans ranges from 25 to 75 per cent, in some cases the ruin is complete. Cotton has suffered to a great extent. Some farmers have de cided to take in the cotton already planted and will put corn in instead, it being too late to plant cotton. The forecasts and physical fore runners of a storm seem to have been valueless from a meteorologital stand point as there have been numerous in dications of rain which have not made good.
