Lancaster is now securely fastened in a cell in the Goldsboro jail. He was captured at four o'clock yesterday morning at a place known as Palmetto bridge about four miles from Vance- . boro on the road to Washington. Mssr3 Jacob and James Lancaster, cousins of the dead man, and George Hill caught him while he was on the road. The men were prepared for resistance but did not meet with any, the man wont with them willingly and they gave him unto the custody of the constable, Mr. W. O. Clark. Realizing the necessity of haste in order to get Bailey out of town before the people should be awnr of his capture and thus avoid any further vio lence, he harnessed his horse and hustled the prisoner into the buggy and drove on to New Bern. He made un usually good time and had no unusual incidents and reached the county jail with his prisoner about eight o'clock. Crowds of curious men went to see Bailey as he sat in his cell. He wag quite talkative and seemed to be in pos session of a large fund of nerve. He insists that he killed Lancaster in self defense. He is an undersized black' negro, with a small head and rather re pulsive features. He weighs between 140 and 150 pounds. His former home was in Pitt county. He has the repu tation of being a "mean nigger," and was notorious among the whites in the neighborhood. uch credit is due to his captors, two of whom were relatives of the murder ed man for not yielding to what mnst have been their natural impulses avenge the death of their cousin. They followed the course of reason and sur rendered the man to the officer of the law. In regard to the prisoner' statement that he shot in self defense, that Lan caster was coming toward him with an open knife has been proven false. The dead man's knife was found in his pocket and under no circumstances could it be a formidable weapon. And Bai ey's wife's testimony before the jury that Lancaster was about to at tack Bailey with a fence rail was also proved false. There was no rail within several yards of where the murder oc curred. The efficacy of blood hounds in tracking criminals was demonstrated in this af fair. Th negro had put a preparation composed of camphor, turpentine and kerosene on his feet to throw the dogs off from their scent but they got the trail and followed it to the bridge where he was caught. Fearing that an attempt might be made to get the prisoner constable Clark and deputy sheriff White took Bailey to Goldsboro last night to await trial in the criminal court here July 2. OASTOHIA.
