The rain which has been the principal event for several weeks has worked a great deal of damage among the farm ers. There has not been one crop that was up to the usual standard of yield and quality. All the early truck crops were hurt either by the cold-dry weath er of May or the wet weather of June and the farmers could realize little or nothing from them. Potatoes were left to rot in the ground, the farmers having prevented from digging them on account of the" rain, the cabbage, peas and beans all fell before the wan ton destroyer, i ; : ' ; For a time there bade fair to be a surcease from the ttqaid element but it has started up again and has probably put the finishing touches on the cotton and tobacco crops. Farmers are dubi ous over the prospect for not one of their staples will yield more than a 25 per cent crop and then will be of in ferior quality. The storm of Monday was one of the worst we- have had this year. The amount or rainfall was if.ua inches in 24 hours. There was only one worse storm, that of June 13, when 4 21 inches fell. There are thousands of families home less, or living in poverty and wretched ness today, who could nave been living in comfort, in good homes, if the hus bands had confided their business affairs to their wives. ' Women are very much better judges of human nature than men. They can detect rascality, deception, and insin cerity more quickly. I know business men who would never think of emploning a manager or super intendent, or a man for any other im portant position, or of choosing a part ner, without managing in some way to have their wives meet the man and get a chance to estimate him, to read him They invite the man, whom they are consideringfor an important position, to their home for dinner, or to spend a Sunday, before deciding. They want the advantage of that marvelous femin ine instinct which goes so directly and unerringly to its mark. I have known of several instances where a wife had cautioned her husband against having anyth'ng to do with a man with whom he was thinking of go ingjinto business, but the husband ignor ed the wife's opinion as silly, and disre garded her advice to his great sorrow later, as the man turned out exactly as the wife had predicted.
