(By Willard Homan.) : Norfolk, Va., Oct. 13 To save three score Hves from death and rescue more I than a half-million dollars worth of i property from destruction is an achiev ment of which most ;raen would gladly talr. Such however is the record of the Revenue Cutter Seminole for the first six months of the year and hardly a man or officer of her crew can be per suaded to talk of it. This vessel is to day busily engaged in patrolling the waters of the Southern Atlantic Sea board from Cape Hatteras to Jackson ville and it is probable that she will vinit Norfolk next year during the life of the Jamestown Ter-Centenial Expo sition and that many thousands of per sons may have an opportunity to see the useful craft. . ' - The Seminole is a single crew vessel of 786 tons and ia one hundred and eighty teet iin length. She ia built of steel and has a speed of about 17 knots She is commanded by Capt 3. H. Quin- an. Her first rescue , of - the year was) that of the schooner Adelbert Ames of New York. This occurred on January 18th, 1906. The schooner was bound from 'Wilmington to New York when she was flung on a shoal at thsCape Fear bar near Wilmington, N. C, by a southwest gale. The schooner wss pounding to pieces when discovered by the Revenue Cutter. The Adelbert Ames was hauled Off by the Cutter and later towed into Wilmington by a passing tug. , The schooner car ried a crew of seven men. . The Seminole met the American bark Ethel, of Elizabeth, . N. J., off. Cape Hatteras on January 27th with ten men aboard. The vessel was making I wen ry-four .inches of water per hour from a leak sprung in a heavy gale which had been raging. The crew of the Sem inole were at once ordered to relieve. the tired men, and at length the ves sel was towed into Lookout Bight, N. C. Two days later the Seminole star ted for Southport, towing the Ethel The hawser by which she was fastened to the Revenue Cutter, parted three times during the trip. She was finally got into smooth water inside of the Cape Fear bar, and then it was. found that she did not leak as fast as in the rough water outside. The bark would have undoubtedly sank bad not the Rev enue Cutter chanced upon her. A lit tle later the Seminole pulled the Amer ican schooner -Msggie S. Hart, of Nee York off the shore at Hatteras Inlet where she had been flung by a heavy gale. The Maggie S. Hart was fast pounding to pieces when the Seminole reached her. The tug "Rescue" was present and assisted tha Seminole in' the-work of hauling the schooner off the shoals. The next daya heavy storm arose which would have broken her to pieces without doubt She was towed into Norfolk where repairs were made. The Seminole had no sooner finished this piece of work when she was noti fied that a derelict was floating about the ocean in the vicinity of Hatteras.. She at once went in search of it and found and destroyed the derelict fifteen miles southwest by south of Hatteras ight The next exploit in which this cutter was engaged was the rescue of the Clyde Line Ship Navahoe from . the clutches of the bar at Middle Ground Shoal Cape Fear. The Navahoe had a large crew and carried besides a ' large', number of passengers. She also had a valuable carfco aboard. The four masted schooner Myrtle Tunnel of Philadelphia was dragged off Frying Pan Shoals near Cape Fear a short time after. This vessel and its cargo were worth about $100,000. Cruising off Cape Fear on the 13th of June the officers of the Seminole saw a aunken schooner squarely in the path of navigation. Charges of dynamite were lowered to the schooner a decks 8 fathoms below the water and she was blown up. This derelict was the schoo ner Jennie Sweeney of Philadelphia Six hundredTand fifty pounds of dyna mite were used in destroying this ves sel.
