Tho weather has boon unfavorable recently for the handling of tobacco, but prices are fair where a good price has been marketed. Fruit and produce are in good demand and the market absorbs all receipts at satisfactory prices. Foundries and machine shops are be ing operated at lull cupacity, and to meet the necessary demands additions to several plants are in course of erec tion or in contemplation. High winds and excessive rain-falls during October caused much damage to cotton and tobacco in parts of eastern North Carolina and Virginia. The loss varies, in some localities being 4s mu".h as 00 per cent, while in other points not over 25 per cent. Only a comparative ly limited area is so affected. The re sult is that collections in most lines are backward and requests for extensions are more numerous than they were a year ago. Most of the merchants and planters in the sections so affected are measur ably prepared for the present adverse conditions, having made substantial profits during several proceeding years. Extra time and indulgence may bo re quired by some, but no serious finan cial stress is expected. Local retail trade improves steadily, but collections are a little slow Famous Strike Breakers. (Special Correspondence ) Greensboro Nov. 17 The assooial ion of tobacco farmers known as the North Carolina Protective Association, held its annual meeting here today and to night. There was a fairly good attend ance of delegates from the tobacco growing counties, when President John S. Cunningham, called the session to order in the court house at twelve o'clock. Ilov. ii. W. Rattle, of the First Baptist church, offered prayer, and Mayor Murphy delivered a line welcome address. This was appropri ately responded to by Secretary J. M. Sheep. Mr C. C. Moore, president of the North Carolina Cotton Association, being called upon, mada an excellent short talk on the necessity for farmeis organizing for protection of prices of all products raised, whether of cotton, wheat, corn or tobacco. After announc ing committees the session adjourned for dinner, after which Mr. J. O. Grave ly, Grand Lecturer, made an able ad. dress. At the afternoon session of the Asso ciation President Cunningham made an appropriate address outlining the acts accomplished b? the Afsocialion in rais ing the price of tobacco, and was fol lowed by Grand Lecturer, Gravely, woo demonstrated that by organization, thereby reducing acreage ard holding back tobacco, the Association had al ready been worth over a million dollars to tocacco planters. Resolutions were adopted recommend ing further decrease of acreage, dis couraging forcing tobacco on glutted markets, aid in fostering the establish ment of storage warehouses, 'redry ing houses, and factories. The legislature was memorialized to enact a law mak ing it a misdemeanor for warehouse men to report having sold tobacco on their floors except originol sales from first hands.
