New Kent, N. C, November :, 1906. ONE BAROMETER OF PRCSPERITY. Of the many industries in this country which may be held as indicative of the country's prosperity, the iron industry is one of the greatest. Almost a count less number of men and people depend upon it for their livir g, and every in terest of importance is directly or in directly affected aa the iron production may be. The increase in the out-turn of pip iron is something enormous. In 19115, the production in the State of Pennsyl vania, alone, was 10,570, 127 tons, or about 2,000,000 tons more than the whole output of the country in 1$ while for the year ending June ftith, 1906, the pigiron output was the largest In the history of the business, that is it amounted to 24 432, lot; tons. The use of iron is -becoming greater each year. Specially is it true of this country, where the structural work consumes thousands of tons, and vari ouf manufactures demand iron rather than wooj, because of the growing scarcity and high price of the latter. As compared with the rest of the world it is estimated that the percapita eon sumption of pigiron in this country is 620 pounds against fiS pounds. ROAD BUILDING EIGHTH TOWN SHIP. The spirit of good road building can truthfully be said to be growing and developing into real and tangible re sults in Craven county. On a trip over the Trent road from New Bern to the Jones county line, the good work is specially to he setn. This road has been for years, in places, notoriously bad. So bad that a great deal of coun try trade has been lost to New Bern. The change today is most gratifying. While the road is not yet completed, yet unless the weather is bad the nine miles can be trotted by a horse and buggy. This is progress, and besides the greatly improved roadway, the road is being straightened and broad ened, the width to be forty feet. A drive over this road gives an idea of the improvements already made, and those being made. The widening of the road give a most beautiful effect, together . with the straightening. Every farm along the road is already more valua ble, for the improved road makes the distance in driving time, much less to New Kern.' In Mecklenlurg county, is miles from Charlotte, farm lands sell for fifty dollars an acre, due to their accessibility, because of good roads. Craven county is now putting into service its convicts on the roads, in stead of giving this labor away, to be used in other counties. The work of road construction in this, the eighth township, is in charge of Mr. J. M. Spencer, and the work is being faith fully and skillfully pushed along. The road tax, which cannot be felt by any taxpayer, is being well used, and with a Continuation of road building as now going on, this township will soon have good roadways leading from all sides into New Bern. This will mean in creased trade for the merchants. It means increase of farm values, and tatier and quicker getting to market with produce by the farmers. Outside if the educational tax, the good roads tax is the best Investment for 'x payers, good roads and good schools, practically go together. Let the tax for good and better county roads be made in every township in Craven. K3T AS A MATTER OF COURSE It Is human to grumble attheill that flesh la subjected to; and to accept with scant, if any thanks, the good things of life. At this season, set e; Hi t through our civil customs, and i '(ized by our religions denomin f i, as the time to offer thanks to the I lie Giver,'' for the mercies and T ' z t the 'year, our Thanks ,': a are too apt to beofaper- functony character. As the average person notes in the newspaper that the President hat set the day for Thanks giving. As is further noted, the Govern or of the State has set his hand and sea' to denote the same day. So perforce the merchant, the business man and the citizen accept the day as a holiday, and partially if not entirely, observe it But Thanksgiving Day observance, in its true sense has a far greater signi ficance than is given it. Very few per sons read the President's or Governor's proclamation. Yet it is a matter of personal profit if one or both, were read. If a study was made of the of ficial proclamation for Thanksgiving Day, there could not help but be an in dividual change of thought. There would come that individual introspec tion, the looking backbrand twelve months, if not many years, and a men tal note be made of blessings which have come, and been accepted without thought, much less & prayer of grati tude to the Giver. The plea of "busi ness. ' The offered excuse of "being so busy," is all sufficient to many, to per mit them to pass by or neglect to no tice, the duties of the hour, as well as the blessings which are given. Life, its good things, its blessings, are not chance. Neither are the afflic tions just chance, a matter of bad luck. Nothing in life is just so, because it would come so any way. And so on this national observance of Thanksgiv ing Day, it is important to not merely pause in our rush, but to stop, to rest for the few hours, and think long and seriously. There is no logs in this. The gain will be, if the study is made of the full significance of the occasion, of a better citizenship; a clearer and more loyal patriotism; a true and higher Christianity There will be the physi cal ri-st and the mental change, that will make the work of the morrow and the succeeding days of the new year, easier and more profitable. Let .not Thanksgiving Day be accep ted as a matter of course. Take it in its highest and truest, and it will profit the the individual, and through the in dividual, develop a nobler and more Christian America. Motor Cycle Accident Last night Roy Egerton was riding his motor cycle on Middle street go ing at his usual speed and when about oposite his father's store the machine i ppeaed to stop and then to start up again after which there was a crash, the front fork broke and the' young man was thrown on the ground with terrific violence and his machine on top of him. He was picked up in an uncon scious condition and taken to Dr. Dug uid's office where it was found that his injuries while severe were not danger ous comprising mostly of bruises on the head. $100 Reward $100. The 'eaders of this paper will be pleased to learn that there is at least one dreaded disease that science has been able to cure in all its stages, and that is Catarrh. Hall's Catarrh Cure is the only positive cure now known to the medical fraternity. Catarrh being a constitutional disease, requires a con stitutional treatment. Hall's Catarrh Cure h taken internally, acting direct ly upon the blood and mucous surfaces of the system, thereby destroying the foundation of the disease, and giving the patient strength by building up the constitution and assisting nature in doing its worth. The proprietors have so much faith in its curative powers, that they offer One Hundred Dollars for any case that it fails to cure. Send for list of testimonials. Address P. J. Hi Sold in New Bern by Bradham't Pharmacy and other leading Druggist Drunken Young Toughs ' Shoof up Train. ' Special Correspondence. Raleigh, Nov. 27th. At the Sunday school meeting yesterday a young lady of this city, who is very prominent as a city missionary, told of her exciting adventure Saturday on a train on the Southern Railway coming from Salis bury to Raleigh. At Thomasville four young white men, all intoxicated, got ou the train. They left it at some sta tion between that place and Raleigh and as they were departing one of them drew a self-acting revolver and fired six shots, one of which almost grazed the cheek of the young lady in question and another bullet going .through the ear of a passenger. Nothing seems to have been with these toughs who were well dressed. Mad Happy lor Lift. Great happiness came into the home of S C Blair, school superintendent, at St. Albins, W. Va., when his little daughter was restored from the dread ful complaint he names. He says: "My little daughter had St. Vitus' Dance, which yielded to no treatment but grew steadily worse until as a last resort we tried Electric Bitters; and I rejoice to say, three bottles effected a complete cure. "Quick, sure cure for nervous complaints, general debility, female weaknesses, impoverished blood and malaria. Guaranteed by all druggists. Price 50c. Hang Out Your License! Revised statute law No. 3239 is a most important one for those who hold U. S, licenses to sell liquor. It calls for the public and prominent display of the license. Several parties in this city hold these licenses issued by Uncle Sam. Some fail to show the credential. Yesterday .1. W. Hamilton was before C. B. Hill, U S Commissioner, charged with failure to observe 3239. He gave bond for his appearance before the next term of the Federal Court. A Methodist Minister Rtcsmmtndt Chamber. Iain's Ceugh Remedy. ' IF THE STREETS WERE" " PAVED WITH" GOLD This Fellow- Would Still Have a Kick Coming. ' V (Special Correspondence. ) ; . Raleifch, Nov. 27. All kinds of queer things happen but one of the strangest is a complaint which an official received from a farmer regarding the budding of fine macadam road through the farm ers territory. The latter said that the road was a great nuisance because- it wore out the shoes of his horses much faster than an ordinary dirt road. He had no other ground of complaint than this, but he thought this was enough. Work Progressing Rapidly, (f pedal Correspondence.) Raleigh, Nov. 27th The contractor who is at work on- the Raleigh A Pam lico Sound Railway, was here today and reports that everything is being pushed as rapidly as possible, all sections of the line being covered. The contractor is the leading man in this line of busi ness in the United States and he has a great force at work. The importance of completing the road at an early day is felt. There will be two ways of get ting from Raleigh to Beaufort, one by going to a point about forty miles from New Bern, and then by a branch to that place and thence to the coast, the other by using a branch line across from Snow Hil. The distance from Raleigh to Norfolk by this r ute is considerably longer than by the Seaboard Air Line or the Southern, but the Raleigl & Pamlico Sound will be a competitor for business between these points. Prohibition is Not All. : The Greensboro Record says wisely: "One fault with prohibition is that too often its most enthusiastic support ers take it for granted that as they do not see a saloon open and doing busi ness there is no liquor being guzzled and they are content. One great aim of prohibition is to stop making drunk ards; the old rounders are of course going to get liquor and drink it. 1 It would be a good idea if some concerted movement were made to induce the young boys around this town to desist from the habit of buying liquor by the gallon. We say "induce" for it is a case where they cannot be prohibited from doing It It U about time that moral suasion was added to the existing laws, for is sure u tbe sun shines a number of young fellows who were never seen around saloons are "biting" at the bait. It is quite fashionable' for three or four to chip in and buy a gal Ion and swig it in their rooms. This is a dangerous practice . and ft is making drunkards right under the nose of pro hibition and the worst of it is that it is done with great secresy. Time was when nothing could hide the smell of booze on one's breath, but in this age of "improvement and invention, "some fellow has discovered something that kills the smelL We were talking to a young fellow the other day and he was full to the brim, yet a trained nose trained from experience-could not de tect the least smell of liquor.
