A Serious Lettuce Disease
Throughout the lettucegrowing sec
tion. and particularly conspicuous in
the neighborhood of New Bern, wil
mington, Fayetteville and Maxton, oc
curs a disease of lettuce of extreme se
rity and destructiveness. It may be
easily recognized by its symptoms.
The disease begins with the wilting
of the outer lower leaves, which droop
and fall flat upon the ground. A similar
fate rapidly overtakes the inner leaves,
and so on over the whole plant, till with
in a few days the entire plant is dead,
lying flat upon the ground.
Upon the under side and at the base
ot the leaves will be noticed, at this
itne, dense cottoo-like growthee (Myc
elium). and in the later stages small
black, irregular bodies (Sclerotia),
from a quarter of an inch long and some
what less in thickness will be found in
similar situation. The Sclerotia and
mycelium are unmistaken signs of this
disease.
This disease is know as the"drop',
and has for several years been a seri
ous menace to lettuce growing in many
portions of the United States. It is
caused by a fungus visible to the eye
as the mycelium and sclerotia referred
to above. If this fungus once gains en
trance to the lettuce bed, no certain,
or at least no economical treatment is
known to get rid of it.
It is therefore extremely important
that all growers who are now free of
this disease take every precaution to
keep free of it, also any growers who
have a portions of their beds free
should use every precaution to keep that
portion from becoming infected.
These precautions consist in preven
ting any diseased plants or fragment of
diseased plants or anyo the mycelium
or sclerotia from obtaining access to
uninfected fields or beds. As soon as
any plant shows an indication of this
disease the plant should pe pulled up
buriSd with lime or destined by fire.
The spot from which the plant was
pulled should be thoroughly drenched
with Bordeaux Mixture. If ihese pre
cautions are followed, by those people
who are not at all or only slightly af f ec
ted with this disease," it will prob
ably be possible to hold the disease in
check.

Sunday School Convention.
Kitts Swamp, Dee. 9th, 1906.
The devotinal exercise were con

The minutes of last meeting were read
and approved. Bro. Seth Gaskins the
township Supt stated in his report that
he had visted Oak Grove and that thi
Sunday School at that place had been
revived and new officers appointed. The
roll of schoo" was called. Galhlee and
Kitts Swamp were represented and re
ported schools in good working order.
Bro. J. A. Ask in, mad 9 an excellent
address, taking fcr bis subject Cause
and Effect in the Sunday Schools. He
spoke briefly of the origin of the Sun
day School and the great good done by
them since they were started. Claude
and Maggie Campbell recited some ex
cellent selections- which added to the
pleasure of the meeting. Much to the
regret of all present, Mr. Daniel Lane
was unable to attend the convention,
but Rev. W G Walker filled his place in
the program, making an interesting and
instructive addres. He spoke of the bet
tor advantages, by way of Sunday
Schools, enjoyed by the children of to
day than those of fifty years ago, when
our parents were children. He attribu
ted, to a great extent, his being a
preacher of the gospel to the influrence
of the Sunday S hool, and urged upon
the parents the duty of going with
their children to Sunday School, insist
ing that they needed its influence as
much as the children, besides setting a
good example. He closed his remarks
with some good advice to the teachers
and officers, especially emphasizing the
necessity of always being on hand at the
right time. ' ' . " . . .
Bros. Ask In and Basnlght, responded
with short encouraging talk.
' After a song and benediction the Con
