One of the most peculiar things In the whole history of signs Is the fact that while all other shopkeepers were patronizing the embryo painters the tobacconist always called upon the woodcarver ou the continent as well as In England. As long ago as Eliza beth's reign the wooden Image of the black boy was the favorite sign of the tobacco dealers. Later the cus tomary sign was the highlandcr or a figure of Sir Walter Raleigh. In Hol land, f jr some strange reaso-.i. the to bacconists adopted the dairymaid as their sign, with the motto, "Consola tion for sucklings." The Indian, nat urally enough, has always been the predominant sign In this country, al though once In itwhlie a reversion to type crops out with the ancient black boy. The Great Jenner. An Englishman bad occasion to go often to an eminent physician and said to Jeames, "You will be tired of open ing the door for me." "Not at all. sir," was the gracious reply; "you are but a hunit In the hocean," Another Jeames was accustomed to say during his master's occasional ab sences: "You had better try hopposlte. There's a very respectable man hop poslte as we often sem's to when Sir William Is lmbsent. His name Is Jen ner." Iradon Mall. Bow Lonsj the Bill Uat, A dollar bill has an average life of about fifteen months. Two dollar bills, not being quite so actively used, last on the average more than sixteen months. A five dollar bill lives on an average two years before It is worn out and tbo government Is called upon to replace It. It's a pleasure to tell our readers a bout a Cough Cure like Dr. Shoop's For years Dr. Snoop has fought against the use of Opium, Chloroform, or other unsafe ingredients commonly found in Cough remedies. Dr. Shoop, it seems, has welcomed the Pure Food and Drug Law recently enacted for he was work ed along similar lines many years. For nearly 20 years Dr. Shoop's Cough Cure containers have had a warning printed on them against Opium and other nar cotic poisons. The Second Grand Event of the Stirring Fraternal' Order The Woodmen of the World demon strated for the second time yesterday that they are able to present as good and unique an entertainment as need be given in the'ttne of Btreet parade." There have been grander pageants that have traversed the streets of New Bern and processions have occurred wherein the trappings" were far moro elegant than anything seen yesterday but it is doubtful if there has ever been a more novel and pleasing scene than was presented at that tme. - Of course the prevalence of ox teams was a fea ture that attracted the attention be cause they are not seen every day. The parade was formed at the Forest according to the program with the ex ception of the intermediate squads of "Woodmen on Foot", which it was found impracticable to have on account of the liquid condition of the streets. However, the wagons, carts and horse men together with the various attrac tions of bands, fantastics etc., made it a very interesting sight. Prominent among the horsemen was Chief; of Police Harget mounted on the old jlay bank fire horse "Jim" these two old warriors and servants of the city were the observed of all obser vers. Twenty-five years have they served the city faithfully in their ca pacities and they are both in good con dition, although Jim ison the "retired' list. It was a common comment on the street as the people noted him that he still had so much of the fire of youth in him. He seemed to enjoy the'proceed ings and pranced and capered on the march as he did years ago. The exercises at night consisted in the installing of officers in which Mr. E B Lewis, of Kinston, officiated and afterward he delivered the address which was greatly appreciated. The entire proceedings showed the growth and strength of the order locally. Bad Stcmach Trouble Cured. WHAT THE KIDNEYS DO Their Unceasing Work Keeps us Strong and Healthy. AH the blood in the body passes through the kidneys once every three minutes. The kidneys filter the blood, they work night and day. When heal thy they remove about 500 grains of impure matter daily, when unhealthy some part of this impure matter is left in the blood. This brings on many dis eases and symptom pain in the back, headache, nervousness, hot, dry skin, rheumatism, gout, gravel, disorders of the eyesight and hearing, dizziness, dropsy, deposits in the urine, etc. But if you keep the filters right you will have do trouble with your kidneys. B. R. King, the well known police man, residing at 708 Wooster street, Wilmington, N C, says: "I had terri ble pain in my back which worked around to my side and in my stomach, so bad at times that it laid me up. I used internal medicines and they did not help me. I used plasters and rubbed with liniment and none of them helped me at all. Seeing Doan's Kidney Pills recommended I got a box of them. The next day after commencing to uso them I noticed relief. Since using two boxes of them I have not bad an ache or pain in my back. It is with pleasure that I add my name to those endorsing the claims made for this remedy." Plenty more proof like this from New Bern people.
