In another column of today's paper
U an advertisement of the Norfolk ft
Southern Colonization Company an
nouncing its purpose to bring to east
ern North Carolina desirable home
Eeekera. Though thia company has
no connection with the Norfolk ft
Southern Railway, it is understood
that it has already formed desirable
connections In the west and north
west by which they are enabled .to
get In touch with the best element of
that section seeking homes In other
parts of the country. These people
constitute the most desirable class of
Immigration that can today be se
cured. They are Americans, familiar
with our langnage and customs, and
readily adapt themselves to our cli
mate and agricultural conditions. In
fact, many of our1 most successful
farmers and business men are among
those who Immigrated here from the
northern and western states. It is
the purpose of the Norfolk ft South
ern Colonization Company to promote
encourage this movement. With this
end in view, tbey are listing for sale
the best of farming lands throughout
eastern 'North Carolina. For these
Ihey find purchasers by co-operation
with their connections in the west.
Those who have more land than they
need would therefore do well to cor
respond with Mr. W. B. Allen, secre-r
tary of ihe company No. 301 Citizens
Bank Building. Norfolk. Va. Mr. Allen
is well known throughout North Car
olina. He has long been identified
with the iusurance business in the
state and has been eminently success
ful. He now gives it up to enter upon
this colonization work. The president
of the company is Mr. .1. B. Blades of
New BAn; its vice president, Mr. E.
J. Becton of Kinston, Secretary W. B.
Allen, Norfolk, Va. These, together
with Mr. W. B. Blades, constitute the
hoard of directors of the company, lt
has strong financial backing and it
entering niion its work under ans
pices that promise snccess for the
company and good work in the devel
opment of eastern North Carolina.
Firemen's Fund.
Editor Journal.
Please allow me rpace In your col
umns to say a few words in regard
to the noble work of the firemen on
Monday night.
I have seen fires in ether places,
cities with paid departments, but 1
have never seen In any place, or at
any time more noble work or braver
men.
Almost rtsklug their lives in the
awful beat they stood their ground,
directing their efforts against every
attempt of the fire fiend to destroy
more property, and these attempts
happened every few minutes." It ia
Indeed a miracle that the fire did not
go to the river, and too much cannot
be said or done for the men who risk
ed their lives time and again, in (heir
efforts to save property.
Another thing that the citizens of
New Bern should bear in mind is,
that these firemen get not one cent of
pay. Never a banquet given in their
honor, never a subscription taken for
their benefit, and not even a rubber
oat. . .'-it. .
The engine that was spoken of in
yesterday's Journal as "ont of com
mission" was not out of commission
but out of fuel, and the Ore was under
control when the engine was carried
back to the engine house and put In
shape for another Ore.
Of course, it is all. well and good
to thank the firemen, bat thanks don't
go very far. What the people of this
city ought to do Is to raise a Fire
men's Fund, and let them know that
what they do Is appreciated.
Now I am sure Oiat the good people
of New Bern will do the right thing
by these men, and contribute freely
to this good cause.
I will start the list with Ave dollars,
and will be glad to take and forward
to the "chief," anything that the good
citizens of the town will give.
Yours rery truly,
PERCY . THOMAS,
