The notes printed below are from a valued subscriber, of many years, of the Journal, the venerable Col. Thos. L. Hall, of Morehead City, and they are the reflections of one who, spend ing the evening of life in peace and quietude finds pleasure la making reminiscences that are past These notes wil be interesting to the Journal readers who wish to recall his torical data." Col. Hall Is considered an authority on matters of Important historical naturo and consequently his notes will, be read with a great deal of interest : The noted 'A Jamestown Exposition" surely, has not been egualled by any people or country before the twentieth century. . . ' It surely has awakened a memory of the early days ot "our great Amer ica." ; ;.; Hence a brief synopsis ot historical facts may interest some readers. In its early, day1,' then were thousands of Englishmen and comparatively few- natives from other points of Eurooe. History, sustains the fact that the men of highest merit, especially In North Carolina, and Virginia, were Scotch men or descendants. Next tat 'rank with them, notably was the 'Swiss." that "Count Jpegraffenrled" sent over from the ancient city of Berne, Swit zerland, 'In the year 1709. The over number ot Englishmen gave them the chief ruling power over the colonies of America. 'Us notable that, even in this day the innate characteristics ot England still exists. The injurious work, against "South Africa" plainly shows It, and It is known that recently the present King ot England, not long since, was made "Emperor of India," It may be here apropos In regard to the characteristic of the Scotch, that the noted jAhdrew Carnegie la well known as a Scotchman who came to America a penniless boy; and he Is now known as the second richest man in America. - He has often shown his commend able character, by furnishing free great amounts of money in aid ot In dividuals and "educational organisa tions," much needed. - Another noted Scotchman was Jtobt Burns; in the shadow of his residence James Wilson, "Secretary ot Agricul ture," was born, of Scotch parents. He now is the only man of "McKia ley's cabinet" of office, who holds his seat at the now President's council table. Another noted man who was born In Scotland is Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor of the "etelephone." The late Speaker Henderson, of- the Na tional House of Representatives, came from Scotland a boy in his "teens." It may not be generally known that nine Presidents of "our beloved America" had Scotch blood in their veins.' Just here, 'tis a pleasure to add that the now noted city of New Bern In its early day was noted ior Its distin guished men of culture and refine ment, so much bo It was for years called after "the Ancient City .of Greece, "The Athens" of North Caro lina, and as an evidence of its men of eminence. It was unequaled by any other city for its men of distinguish ed merit In every line. As before written, the Scotch and Swiss were noted for all qualities that lend to exalt and dignify mankind. . Pages might be writen, and columns filled by giving the names of New Bernean men of noted merit Gaston, Donnell, and Gov.. Speight, May be named at this late date. The Bryansk Atmores, and Judge .
