. Your superintendent Mr. Brinson has
kindly invited me to meet you on this
.-J occasion that we may have a face to
face talk on the prevention of some
ot th mora Important death- produc
ing .disabling, disease, of .our commu
nity. : S&i:-v i.'i
When4 tell you that it is esjimatea
that, more than 600,000. nearly on
half of the deaths from all causes in
the , .United States , occu c . every, year
frem diseases which are strictly : pre
ventable, you will no doubt see with-:
out , further' argument : the necessity
that every man, woman, and child, In
our land should immediately enter the
ranks to battle against the spread of
these diseases. "The diseases of . this
class that . mor nearly concern u
a, re, Tuberculosis, typhoid and Mala
rial, fevers, and hookworm diseases.
Ther are of course Other diseases be
longing to this list, uch as yellow
fever, mall-pox, , dlptheria scarlei
fever, small-pox. diphtheria, . scarlet
but they altogether cut a small flgur
In our death . rate, In. comparison to
the four first enumerated, and strange
to say,; while this is tho case, these
comparatively insignificant . diseases
have for years and year received the
unstinted care and concern of muni
cipal state and national authorities,
involving the expenditure of Immense
suiaa of. jmaney,.. while . tuberculosis.
typhoid, aud malarial fevers and boos.
worm diseases are allowed to continue
their silent and deadly march almost
unmolested. , Jt ,1a not my purpose to
enter fully into the discussion ptthesv
eauses and,, prevention of tbese. dis
eases, but simply to say enough to
Interest ' 7w , in the study of - ther
causes ,and the methods of their pre
vention. At the head vt the list we
have under consideration stands tuber
culosis, j About 10 or ' 12 per cent ot
th deaths in th . United States ' is
eaused by this one disease, the es
tlmated total being 170 to 200,000 pu
annum. ;' v"1 ' .
I recently attended the meeting ot
the ' International Tuberculosis Con
gress In Washington City where wer
assembled men Of th highest rank
in our' profession' from all over th
world. Of this vast assemblagge of
scientific men, no voice was heard
dissenting from the dictum tuat tuber
culosla can be and muBt be wiped oft
th face ot the globe. Concerted act
ion and effort must be hud to stay its
march, and I know of no better place
to go tor recruits" to this army of ex
termination now being formed, than
to the ranks of th teachers of the
coming generation. Reforms of what
ver kind take easy, root In the ten
der minds under your car as pupils.
"Teach your pupils at the very first
