DCSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT Local endeavor'for local industrial development, under the auspices ot: . . . .. , the needs of Mew Bern, it should be continued with. every possible ef fort to make ie successful. But while the industrial effort should be pursued .with every effort possible, there, is another phase inju VTIO.WL BVXK the advancement OT New Iiern. com-j BERE. mercially, that calls for attention and action on the part of the cham ber of commerce. Taking up the commercial history of New Bern, what lias imi.le its proa pert)", and the success f bankers and merchants, init i'i.s rii;rieiiliiirai interests, which are within Hu- trnde circle of this city?. , There is saw mill industry. and,!olnsely allied, ilie timber land interests', whioh have been money makers',' and' made Niw Bern a banking raty, of importanee. But with all the mil and timber in terests fully credited, it must be ac knowledgej that it ii; the agricultural interests th it have" lieen' the chler source for local prosperity forwilii truck and other crops in seas matile abundance, every trade interest or New Bern has ste;ulily trained, anrt the local hanks have -become the re-i positorics of increasing funds from the farmers. . With this agricultural feature In view, the Journal ei'Us attention to the possibility s of. biiiMiu'; no the farming interests of thi s lii'niediaTf section, tributary to this city. This means going after the iunst deslra- ble class f immigrants, not those in 1 Europe, but those in Uie west ana ; northwest. Take up th'e historv ori I the Canadian northwest within thej last few years, and if is found that'., farmers, from the stales of I Mimas, i. and Iowa, and other ,tat s. have sold out their farms, aurt.'iaUen millions of dollars to invest in Canadian farm lands. And yet tnese' far u a thwest lands, only abundant In cr ip pros pects for a few month:;, with a long season of snow and, Ice, arc not to be compared t this eectlan, provided equal intelligence, cavitiri and energy are" expended in agricultural develop ment here. This i toe 'land of realty annual crop cultivation, if farmers '" so wish. Them ate kthree . to . four crops, and not anycrowding. I is agricultural possibilities of this scc tton that ought to be presented to the agriculturist of the wesand northwest If one hundred or Ave hundred or more families of the successful farm ers from .those sect!' Jus -could le . shown what can be done hrev .and thlg tide of Immigration lie directed thl way, by proving, that this section offers far superior, t advantages for agriculturists, tbaadnt other sec- tlons, there wotild 1e a''galn for New jBern that cannot be'eomputed. And rarely dij this fail,, tor it was the oast of the people here, . , .... . , . . unique and unequalled. The Fair" has closed years ago to the loss of this community, but the beautiful weather remains, and white the visitors " here now are tew tn number,: compared to the days when the fair was the attraction, yet those who Ytei't New Bern during the win ter, are as those of. former days, full of praise for this climate. It s the freedom from the real ele ments of Winter, that makes this sen son peculiarity genial to visitors. There are the occasional cold days. There are snow falls and ice to tie seen in creek and river. But these are bub incidental. The real weather is the kind that makes out door life 'attractive, wnen walkiftg riding and even boating can i'be enjoyed and winter is only known through the reports from other sec- This is a section blessed with winters, a section for the tour : yeuial winters, a section for the tour ist who would escape the ice aua snow fields, and instead of being kept wiLhin doors, can each day en joy freedom in the open air, to do is one wills. OF SEW However startling, from a ersonal view point, the particulars are con cerning the defalcation which has just been repot ted at . the National Hank of New Berne, from a financial view point, from every side of its business situation, there cannot but be the thought of every intelligent mind, of those acquainted with bank ing methods, that today the financial status of this bank must rest upon a sounder foundatnti, than it has at any period, while the defalcation just reported has been going on. Two facts sustain this position. First,, the defalcation was sus pected before it became a matter ;f public knowledge, and during this time, there was a check upon any further defalcation, and at the same i j time ample cash funds were brougnt to the bank's vaults and the bauk dl- rectors made good the estimated de- falcatiou. Second, the replacing up ! on a sound money basis, what was j previously, an uncertainty in way or j financial soundness, though this un soundness was a secret, places this hanking Institution today where its ! financial integrity will not be ques- ,jone(j It is from the personal side, rather than the financial side, that the pres- nt (.rouble is to be largely deplored. flie National Bank of New Berne, i ! with its capital stock unimpaired, its i large surplus fund, its individual pro tiu account, and the high "uanclal i .umding of its officers and director!. i i A ili continue to carry forward its hanking business" without interrup tion, or even hesitation. As already noted it Is from the personal side, not the financial, that this bank nas '.ern so sorely touched. Flowers Campeiu Dr. C. A.
