W liliaius. v Text: Acts 5, 3: "VVby haih SaUn Cll- ed thine heart to lie to the Holy Gbostr ". ' . . . Ananias Is one ot the distinguished men in Biblical history. He made u name for being bad. There are many good men mentioned In the , liibie whose names have dwindled in to ob livion,, but every man 4n the Kiblo who was notoriously bad has made a name to live. y . , This Ananias was the first, president of the "Ananias Club", anj Sapphira, his wife, was his confidential secre tary;. There seemed to be perfect af finity between them. They -v were charmingly matched, and I have no doubt that they lived In great peace and harmony. I think It Is 'a good tiling for a bad" man to have ' a bad wife." At least. It keeps up the lder. of affinity, and tiie most'awfnl thins this side of perdition is for a good man to be tied up with a bad woman. Hence, the Apostle, speaking of mar riage, said,. "Only in the Lord." v. f. Ananias was a man who wanted to be popular. . When lie saw other peo ple joining the church, of course, he "Jlned." His sort always go with the multitude, good or bad, ' He was get ting along very well, and was quite popular until "a good man" sold' his possessions and gave it to the. Lord. At once this man became ImViienaely popular. It was too much for Ammi as, and he said to his wife'' we are losing deal, and something hniRt be done." "We wil sell our possessions and give it to the Lord; also, land be-1 come as popular as Barnabas, bfit we will not give It all to the Lord. 'S We will Save out something for ourselves, and we will get the credit for doing the same thing the other follow did." "We will keep back part of the price". "Good", said Sapphira, bis wife, "you are a dear; you always know how to do the right thing." . So they sold their 'possessions and brought the mo ney to the churchy The Holy Spirit revealed to St. Peter that this man was a hypocrite of the deepest die. Peter said, "Why hath Satan filled thy . heart" to lie to the Holy Ghost? Thou hast not lied to man, but unto God." Ananias fell dead. ;! . In a short while his' wife tame in, not knowing what had happened, and she said to Peter When aske about the matter, "yes, Indeed, we only got so much fqr the land." Peter said, "tbe feet of those wbo have buried thy husband are at the door and will carry thee out." And she too", died suddenly. This is a short statement of the history of the baa Ananias. So ended the first, "Ananias Club." . ; Hypocricy ia the meanest .thing In all the world and the- most unreas onable thing. There Is no reason why a man should play the bypocrit. It 4s more popular to be bad than to be good, even In 'this advanced Christian age. When I see a man making a pro tesion of religion and holding on to any of the old life, I always think that "he has kept back part of the any of th old life,, I ayways think that "he has kept back part of the price." He lies ;. 'V Christ said, "ye 'cannot serve God and Mammon." And this is what math ematicians call an axiomatic truth, 'a self evident, proposition, and every man and every woman In-the. commu nity who. professes the religion of Jesus Christ, and doesn't live It, Is branded a liar by their neighbors, It matters not how bad the nelfihliors may be themselves. . The other day I heard a Christian man complaining that his horse did not thrive. He smellej very strongly of whiskey. I advised blm to give the horse the whiskey, for If the horse did not thrive, It would not ruin his char acter, but the scent of the stuff on tho man would ruin his character In this advanced Twentieth century.' Ho said that he did not drink. I replied, "then you o'ught to hive your frtends stop pouring llquor on our clothes, lie Is a liar and a Hypocrite. I knew a man once who htU- high position in church, be loved office, h loved display. He was often seen on tbe streets with a Bible under his arm and sometime with other women, but never with bis wife. He seemrd te forget that (.he Blble.says 'htmband: love your rives." and had rtad it husbands, love your neighbors wives All sorts of rumors attended that man He was a ruined man but did not know It. He was playm me part m an there was not an Indi vidual In town wbo had rrtnfidonce In hlra. Including himself. The grandest man to be found today U the ml true, godly, character, and tho most miserable scoundrel on tho face of Oie earth Is the modern Ananlast, the prating hypocrite. Some 'aluner will read this and say. "Give it to Him." 'That I J'ii tha reason I don't attnc churrh; there are too many hyywritcr there." . "In two weeks after beginning your treatnibet I was well. I used niue bot him. ; - ' . AVhen I was a young man. I came to town and got my hair cut and trim med ray finger nails, got a pair of cuffs on and a high tariff collar, and a red necktie. I got a position with ray old friend) T. A. Green, I had to rush from morning to night and have had the rushing spirit ever since. One day the head clerk, Mr. Samuel C. Windley, found a counterfeit dollar in the money drawer ana called me and said: you have taken a counter feit dollar. I came and examined the money. He took a genuine silver dol lar and a counterfeit dollar and taught me difference between the ring of tbe genuine and the .counterfeit and 1 have known It ever. since. A thousand times I have been reminded of tbat counterfeit dollar when I see Mr. An anias strutting around trying to pass off for a good man. -, I! hayen't time fdr a long discourse today but I want to say just a word or two about the good Ananias. He's the man who wa sent by God to In struct Saul of Tarsus In the way of h-lKhteousness. Saul had letters to Damascus to kill blm and to destroy all other Christians, but, when the Savior appeared to Saul, the scene changed and the Savior spake to Anan ias telling him to go and teacb Saul. He did it;. The Christian always o- beys, though . It may., seem at times that it Is really against bis Interest When he went In to Saul, he laid bis hand on his head and said "BroUuv Saul." t How beautiful, that the man whose life Saul was seeking could ca'l him brotber. When Saul got ,rlgh, he took up his abode on "straight street." There are a great many Chnu tlans who live In "Crooked street" and can be seen at late hours of the night when decent people are In bed ' Now, bypocrit, you stop your fool Ishness and move out of that corner where you live, and like Saul of Tar bus. get quarters on "Straight street" and when you meet your friends l.ere after, they will smile on you instead of scowl. ) , . . f If you Insist oa being a member of the Ananias Club, come around to see me next week and we will torm the sood Ananias club for work at Long Wharf, and will elect you president, and that '.woman who likes you. we, will make her your confidential secre.i tary.
