The Norfolk-Southern Railway Com pany have just concluded adding two more miles of track on the local shift ing yards. There are now 84 cases on the crimi nal docket to be tried next week, ard it is more than probable that ten or fif teen others will be added before the ses sion closes. Judge G. S. Ferguson will preside. Late yesterday afternoon S. H. Bar nett, the young white man who embez zled $240 from the Hall Tailoring Co. had failed to satisfactorily arrange the matter, and he is still behind the bars in the Craven county jail. A chicken with four well developed legs was exhibited to the Free Press man by Mr. Jim Taylor Saturday after noon. The little biddie was alive and got about right briskly on two legs, the other two being more ornamental than useful, though fully developed. Kins ton Free Press. The weather yesterday was extreme iy hot in this section and also extreme ly disagreeable. Reports from all over the eastern section of the United States stated that the hot wave was prevalent all along the coast. Toe weather bu reau, however promises us some cooler weathe within the next few days. A circular recently sent out by the State Board of Health requests every stable owner in the State 'to see to it that his stables are kept in a sanitary condition so that they will not be ger minating places of the deadly house My which spreads so much disease during the summer months. This is an excel lent piece of advice and it is hoped that it will be heeded by the stable owners of this city. THURSDAY. The first canteloupea of the season have made their appearance on the local market. The delicacies were shipped to one of the local merchants from An thony, Fla. Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock the Athenian lodge No. 8, Knights of Pyth ias will hold their annual memorial ex ercises in the Athens theatre. Hon. George E. Hood, of Goldsboro, will de liver the memorial address. Every cit izen is extended a cordial invitation to attend. It is to be hoped that every citizen in the county will take part in the good roads meetings that will be held In each township on July 4th. This matter is of vital importance and needs to be thoroughly agitated before the work of building the great Central Highwsyj begun. The quality of ve hicles manufactured by this reliable firm has gained an enviable distinction among vehicle users in this section, and the plant is taxed to its utmost capacity in fil ing orders. If a driver of one of the public hacks charge you more than 10 cents for car rying you anywhere within the city limits it is up to you tot refuse to pay him. At a recent meeting of the Board of Aldermen an ordinance was passed prohibiting them to charge more than this amount for carrying passengers any where in the city limits. Any viola tion of this ordinance by them, if re ported to the Mayor, will cause them to be severely reprimanded. The citizens of Kinston have held a meeting and an "agreement." has been drawn up to which 150 solvent persons are asked to attach their signatures guaranteeing to sign notes for the pur chase of a site for the proposed school for the Feeble Minded in the event it is located in Kinston. It is also under stood in the "agreement" that applica tion is to be made to the next legisla ture for permission for the city to bond itself for money sufficient to take up the notes, thus relieving the signers of their responsibility, Options have been secured on several tracts of land that are desirable sites for the school. FRIDAY. Next Wednesday the Centenary Methodist Sunday School will operate an excursion from this city to Morehead City. Besides carrying the members of the school on this trip it is probable that others will be allowed to purchase tickets and to spend a day at the sea shore. The Norfolk-Southern Railway Com pany is having an extention addition added to their freight platform in the rear of the Trent river warehouse. When this has been completed they will have much better facilities for unT loading freight boats, and it will also afford them more storsge room. Thore was a decided change in ihe weather yesterday morning. At eight o'clock the mercury registered 62 de grees against 81 on the previous morn ing, and no one- was seen preambula ting around with their coats off. The Weather Bureau promised some cool weather during the next few days and it arrived on schedule time. Contrary to expectations the torpedo boat DuPont has not yet been returned to this port, A few weeks ago a com munication from the Charleston navy yard stated that the boat, which has been undergoing repairs, would be re turned here about the first of this month. So Bar, however it has not put in its appearance, the delay doubtless being caused in securing a new crew. The Japanese have followed the lead of the United States in legislation to secure the abo lition of child labor, the safety of . the employes and sanitary conditions in fac tories, according to information received at the Department of State. Under the new laws, persons under 12 years of age may not be employed in any factory. Persons under 13 years of age and women may not be employed more than 12 hours a day. nor for the oiling or repairing of dangerous ma chinery. All shall have at least two holidays a month. Persons under 15 shall not be employed in the handling of poisons, injurious chemicals or explo sives. '' All persons working more than six hours a day shall have a recess during working hours of at least 36 minutes, and if working more than 10 hours the recess shall be at least ono hour, i Per sons working alternately in day and night shifts shall have at least 4 holi days a month, and the working boors shall be alternated at least once 'every ten days. Baird, Jr., has rasigned as General So licitor of the Norfolk-Southern Railway Co. and the John L Roper Lumber Co. of Norfolk. His resignation was' fol lowed by the announcement of thef ap pointment of Col. W. B. Rodman, of Charlotte, as' assistant general solicitor for the railroad and general, solicitor for the Roper Co. Rodman was divis ion counsel for the Southern Railway of this State. . At the sweet pea show given in the offices of the Gas Company a few days ago by the Children of the Confederacy under the supervision of Mrs. Hughes Holland and Mrs. B. E. Moore, twenty five dollars was realized 'from the pro ceeds of the sales. This amount in ad dition to the several cash prizes award ed the children and which were gener ously donated to thermae, was turned over to the Circulating Library and will be used in purcahsin Luks for the juvenile department. C., June 8 It was an nounced at the closing exercises of Trin ity College that the Nrfrth Carolina and tbe Western North Carolina Methodist conferences and the Dukes of -New York city, have entered upon apian whereby Trinity College is to be given a million dollar endowment, of which amount $200,000 will be raised by tbe church. ' -,- ': The gift of f 100,000 in lands by J as. B. and Benjamin N. Duke, of $50,000 for anew building by James P. Duke, and of $10,000 by B. N. Duke, for cam pus improvements, was announced to day, thut totaling $l6Q,(00 at this com mencement and running the Duke phil anthropies far above a million and a half to date. . . . . 'The million dollar endowment is to be used, it is supposed, for the purpose of establishing at Trinity College a depart ment of dentistry, medicine and other much needed additions. North Caroli na and Western North Carolina confer ences have agreed to raise $100,000 each of this amount, and it is generally sup posed that the Dukes will chip in the remaining $800,000. ..The gifts of this family to Trinity now amounts p close on to two million dollars, and with the hew addition this insfttntion will be sev eral times more heavily endowed than any other Southern college, !
