T PASSING EMS j FRIDAY. 5 or 6 doses "666" will cure any case of Chills and Fever; Price, 25c. Carteret county's first cotton blossom was sent in from Pelletier by Mrs. Ularie Smith, who says that she pluck ed it from her field June 27th. The schooner Annie Farrow, Capt. Burrm, arrived from Hyde county yes terday with a cargo of country produce, such as cattle, hogs, chickens etc. The Journal has received a cotton blossom from L. C. Stokes a farmer living near Grifton, who says that it is the first one reported in that section. It was plucked June 27th. A telephone message was received from Vanceboro yesterday, saying that the rains of Wednesday and Thursday had done much good although crops hadj. not been particularly suffering from drought. Crops are described as being-perfectlj beautiful. ', A . report from Oriental yesterday stated that a colored woman had been ao badly burned at her home near tbat place that it was more than probable that she would succumb to her injuries. Meagre details were learned in regard to the accident, but it seems., that she . was attempting to make a fire in the cook stove with a can of kerosene and the can exploded while she held it in her hand. SATCEDAT. Another large shipment of Irish po tatoes passed through this city yester day morning enroute from Pamlico county. All during the present week large shipments of the tubers have been made from that county and from all re ports the farmers are receiving good prices for their products. His many friends in this city will re jrret to learn that Mr. R. C. Roberson, of Clnyton, N. C and who recently as sumed the management of the Gaston Drug Company, is seriously ill at the home of his parents at Clayton. Mr. Roberson was taken ill in this city sev eral days ago with an attack of typhoid fever and was carried home. Next Wednesday the First Baptist Sunday School of this city will picnic at Oriental. A special train will be se cured to carry the .crowd down to that place and the fare for the round trip will be very reasonable. This will be a good opportunity to visit that place and it is more than probable that a number of outsiders will take advantage of this reduced rate. The Broad Street Grocery Co. is mak ing preparations to remove to the brick store on Broad street that was occupied by C, V. McGehee. New goods are being placed there every day but the business will not be transferred until next week. The removal is necessita ted because of lack of room in the present quarters. The new place is considerably larger and in better shape to accommodate the large and rapidly increasing business of the company. SOTO AY. B or 6 doses "666" will cure any case of Chills and Fever. Price, 25c. Yesterday afternoon Capt Harper took a party down to Slocura'a creek on a crabbing expedition. Last Friday night one of the valua ble horses belonging to Daniels & New berry was stricken with an attack of colic, and before medical aid could be secured the animal died. ' Quite a large shipment of soft shell crabs pBssed through the' city yester day morning enroute from Morehead City and Beaufort to points in the western part of the State. , Mr. '.T, F. McCarty is having the building that occupie J the corner of his lot on Pollock street and which was formerly occupied by T. F. McCarthy & Son grocery store torn down, in or der to enlarge his lawn and so that he could further improve the premises surrounding his dwelling. A company of colored people have purchased an automobile and will use it fui a public conveyance, for hire, espe cially to take out pleasure parties for a ride. It is said that the charge per per nor! is forty cents for a ride "around t in-circle," that is from town out Jack- Koillh road, via the Oaks to Neuae road nn.l hack, which is quite reasonable, in tlio nlmence of a car line, It it understood that several licenses t i at II mult liiiior have been issued in t i city ty the U. S. Government YES SIREEI THOROUGH BRED TOBACCO. A quarter pound plug of sure enough good Whether the owners of these licenses will make an attempt to sell malt here is not known, In the law enacted at the recent session of the legislature there was nothing said in regard to this variety of liquor and it is probable that an attempt will be made to place it on sale. The other morning a small colored boy who had beat a ride from the pas senger station on the eastbound pas senger train came near losing his life by attempting to jump from the stepB of the car. He was thrown several feet away and rolled down an embank ment but fortunately he escaped seri ous injury, This business of young boys beating rides on trains is very dan gerous and should be .stopped. TUE8D1I. Today, July 4th, being a Legal Holiday, there will be no business tran sacted by the banks of this city. Misses Aldie Bagwell and Mamie Denton left, today for New Bern to at tend Miss Pearl Walters house party. They will go to Morehead before re turning home. Charlotte Chronicle. Three cases of disorderly conduct were disposed of in thh police court yesterday afternoon. The defendants all plead guilty to the charges against them and were released upon the pay ment of the cost ot the cases. Several of the local dealers have fire works on sale at their places of busi ness. Each year the celebration of the 'Glorious Fourth'in this manner collects a ghastly toll in the maiming and death of hundreds of children and it is to be hoped that nothing of this sort will oc cur in this city today. The Sunday excursion train from this city to Wilmington is gaining for itself a distinction that is not at all enviable. Parties going over to spend the day at Wrightsville say that on both the outgo ing and incoming trains crowds of row dies terrorize the passengers by their conduct. Few people desire to travel over a road that allows such conduct. In attempting to avoid running down a launch loaded with ladies and children as it was passing through the draw at Morehead City Sunday afternoon the torpedo boat "DeLong" ran into the draw and the bow of the boat was badly battered. The captain of the ves sel Btated to the Journal reporter yes terday that unless he had run his boat against the draw it would have struck the launch and cut it in two. Fortuna tely the jar did not start a leak in the vessel and it was able to come on to this city. A Well Kaown Man's Opinion, . It rtftti. The Savodine Co., New Bern, N. C We have derived so much benefit from the use of SAVODINE, that we wish to add our testimony to the list of those already acquainted with its mer its. My wife has been using SAVODINE for quite a while for cold in the head, also has found it a ready relief for CATARRH but above all that, is the fact of its having proved itself invaluable to us for our baby. A short time ago he was ta ken very tick, and as he would clap his little hands to his ear. we decided he must be suffering with earache, and re alizing that something must be done at once, we put a tiny bit of SAVODINE In his ear covered it with warm cotton and in a few minutes he was sleeping as sweetly as though he had never had pain. We cheerfully recommend Savo dine as we will always feel grateful for what it has.done for us, ' C. LUPTON, . Chief of Police. New Bern, N. THIRTY SPIIJIIG MILLS CLOSED Many Thousands of Operatives Thro wd Out of Employment For Ten Days of Longer Gastonia, 3 Thirty or more spin ning mills in Gaston county will be closed down far the next tea days, of two weeks, and as a consequence many thousand mill operatives will be idle for that period. This number repre eeata 75 per cent or more of the spin ning mills and even larger percentage of spindles in this country. Those mills which useHheir own yarn in manufac turing cloth will not close down, though it is a fact that a few of the mills in cluded in this number are affected by the shortage of power caused by low water on the Catawba and a consequent shortage. in electric power available. The unfavorable condition of the yarn market is given as the real cause for this shfet-down. One of the best posted manufacturers in this section stated today that he would not be sur prised if the larger part of the spin ning mills in Gaston and this immedi ate section should find it necessary to remain idle for a month or more. Oyster Islands similar to those form ed of coral are fori nil in several purls of the world. The Islands in Newporl river and Beaufort bnrhor. North Car ollua. says a writer lu the Onturj Path Magazine, have been discovereo to,, bare as base a reef to wtiicb the spawn were attached and above tills layer upon layer of oysters, vegetable growth and debris brought by the ac tion of the waves and winds, all ot which finally grows high enough to rise above the surface of the writer This growth Is exactly analogous to that of the coral Islands of the Pacific. The islands near the mouth of the river Tagus, in Portugal, are said to have been built up In this wny also. Here, where there is such a quantity of oysters that 100,000.000 a year would scarcely be missed If they were re moved, the expanse of water Just be yond the river's mouth Is dotted with oyHter Islands. As in the case of the coral reefs, which on the seaward side may be covered with living, growing coral, live oysters thrive In the same waters where the accumulation of dead generations has served to form the Islands. Muscles May Move Themselves. Albert von Haller, a Swiss surgeon of the eighteenth century, was the first to point out tbat the muscles of our bodies have an automatic action. Before Halter's time It was believed that the muscles could not contract or swell up of themselves, but were drawn up by the nerves of volition. Bailer discovered that this Is not so, but ' that a muscle, if irritated, will draw Itself together automatically, even when It Is quite separated from the nerves, and this has since been proved to be true by a great number of experiments. So that though It is true our nerves are the cause of our moving, because they excite the mus cles and so cause them to contact, yet the real power of contraction is In the muscle Itself. The body of men U full of wonders, not the least of which Is this automatic power of contraction In all muscles. Louisville Courier Journal. Notice of Loss of Certificate of Stock. P. L. PERKINS, This the 80th, day of June, 191L - ' Genius end Appetite. Sir Francis Galton held that a good appetite Is one. of the attributes of genius. "Moat notabilities nsve been great eaters and excellent digesters on the same principle that the furnace which can. raise more steam than Is usual for. one of Its size must burn more freely and well than U common." Scott was of the same opinion. In a letter to Canning respecting to article promised to the Quarterly Hevlew he advises him to break the neck of it after a hearty meal, "preferably of polled chicken." - And he practiced what he preached, for, tike Tennyson, Dickens, Thackeray and many other nineteenth century authors, Scott was an ' excellent1 trencherman. One fiechad Bey tried It, with a re mit weird enough to serve as a basis tor a detective story or a comic opera. The young Turk bad organized a football team among his friends, to gether with some Greeks and Arme nians, and bgaa practicing. Not very long after, in the middle of the night, police came to his house and carried him off to 8cutart .There be was sub mitted, to a long' Interrogation as to the club and the game of feotbalL 1 The authorities were convinced that they had found a great plot and that the club mast be a secret society. A special messenger was sent for the ball, and that was duly examined and found to be an infernal machine. The rules of the game were considered to be another piece of damning evidence, and still worse were the sweaters and colors of the club. After long deliberation the culprit was sent to the higher police authori ties in Stamboul, who went through a second long examination and came to the conclusion that the empire had been saved from disintegration by the early discovery of a great plot They dispatched the whole matter to be In quired into at the sultan's palace at Ylldlz, and a special commission, took the matter In band.
