The examination on Thursday will be for the white teachers and on Friday for the colored teachers. They will begin each day at 10 o'clock. Irish potatoes sold yesterday on lo cal market for $3,50 and $4 per barrel. A few days ago several barrels sent from this section to New York sold for 75 cents and $1 per barrel Farmers who bring their produce to this market are assured of the highest market price uid fair treatment, while if they ship it ti northern markets they run a great risk of losing their money. Although this is one of the dullest seasons of the vear. especially in the mercantile business, there is fair amount of trading being done in this city, in fact a great deal more than usu al Manv New Bern neonle are BDend- ing the Summer out of the city and this assists in decreasing the amount of trading but there are a number of visi tors here each day and the amount of money expended by them with fecal merchants runs up into the thousands of dollars each month. United States Commissioner A. J. Loftin this morning bound over to the federal court Hugh Muse, on the charge of ilicit distilling. Muse was one of the three charged with connection with the still captured last Saturday on Pan ther Creek, near "fink Hill, by Deputy Marshal Smith, Deputy Collector Cam eron and Deputy Sheriff Gray. A news item sent out from Philadel phia Wednesday stated that Daniel Clarence Bryan, the young man who so mysteriouly disappeared a week or two had returned. Bryan claimed that he had been on a visit with relatives in New Bern but inquiry here failed to elicit fcny information as to wboss these relatives can be, and so far as is known he has not been in this city. Upon his return to Philadelphia he dis played to his land lady a shot sack full of gold money which he said had been bequeathed him by a deceased relative. An incident that was rather amusing to a number of people occurred at the Union station yesterday, In attempt ing to alight from the train with a box of chickens which he waa bringing to the city, an old colored man dropped the box, and upon striking the concrete walk it burst open. Two of the chicks at once made a break for liberty and aucceeded in getting clear of the bounds of their narrow confines. The old man quickly passed the box containing the remaining fowls to a friend and began to chase the recreants around the tion. He captured one of them but the other one escaped. His lamentations were loud. SUSDAY. S or 6 done "666" will cure any case of Chills and Fever. The hot weather evidently has the effect of taming the law break- era. ,,V-- Another boat load of Bogue Sound watermelons arrived in port yesterday moring and were disposed of to local dealers. These melons, too, as has been the case with all those so tar brought from that section were very small. The growers say that the hot weather which has prevailed for the past few weeks is the cause of thB. Although very little is being said in regards to "good roads" and the cen tral highway just at this time, the mat ter is still being kept before the public in a general way. Bocst this project whenever the opportunity is offered, for there is nothing that will assist in the materialization of a city's commer cial expectations as much as good high ways. News was received in this city yes terday that Mr, R. C. Robertson, of Clayton, who came here a few weeks ago to assume the management of the Gaston pharmacy and who was stricken with an attack of typhoid fever a few days after his arrival and was taken home had succumbed to the disease. Mr. Robertson was unmarried and lived with his mother and sister, So far as can be learned there have been but few mosquitoes in this city this summer. The writer has not heard a single one of these pesky little insects singing around on hot nights and has heard but few complaints from other persons. Evidently some one has mixed his slogan of ."swat the fly" with "slam the mosquito" and has ex terminated the breed in this section. During the past week or two a num ber of valuable horses belonging to people in and near this city, have died, the animals, in the majority of 'cases were suddenly stricken with what was supposed to be an attack of colic, and before aid could be given them they were dead. Over driving in hot weath er doubtless caused these attacks, and owners of live stock should be careful with them just at this season. The American Medical Association, baa compiled a number of interesting booklets on "Medical Fakei and Fak ers." These pamphlets deal with the manufacturers of a large number of "fake" remedies that are now on the market and fully exphins the results that will come from using them. A pos tal sent to this association at No, 635 Dearborn Ave., Chicago will secure one of these pamphlets free of charge. Two dwellings, Nos. 139 and 140 Pol 1 ck frtreut, the property of Mr. Chas. II. Hill, are being repainted. This will add much to their exterior appearance. Jailer Williams informed the reporter yrs'erd ly that he now had about fifteen "boarders" at his institution on Broad street. Of this number there are sev eral white men. One of the largest crowds of visitors went down to Morehead City Sunday morning and spent the day at the surf. When the train left this city it consisted of eight coaches and they were all well filled. Mr. J. Homer Mann has been appint- ed special agent for E is tern North Car olina of the South Atlantic Life Insur ance Company, of Richmond. This is a Southern institution, strong and wor thy of patronage. Mr. Cicero Gaskins, of the Sunday school at Kitt Swamp, requests us to state that Childrens' Day will be ob served at that place on July 30th. A collection will be. taken for Foreign Mis sions and a cordial invitation is extend ed the public to attend. A broken wire caused the fire alarm bell to ring violently yesterday morning shortly before 10 o'clock. The hose wagons responded, but before they had reached the scene of the supposed Maze were informed of the state of affairs and returned to headquarters. The Norfolk-Southtrn excursion fn m Golds boro to Norfolk todajwvill doubt less be well patronized. The fare from this city is only $2.50 and it is probable that a large number of New Bern peop le will take advantoge of this low rate and visit that city for a few days. The torpedo boat "Elfrida" will leave today for Hertford and Windser where they will take on board the Naval Re serves at those places for a ten days cruise. During that time the boys will be instructed in the use of the guns on the boats and will also engage in target practice. Mr. F. M. Chadwick and sons Willie and Jacob, left late Saturday night for the Straits where they will spend sev eral days fishing. Upon returning they will be joined by Mrs. Chaiwick and children, who are now visiting relatives in Carteret county. The party was well supplied with fishing tackle and other accessaries and will doubtless ful ly enjoy their outing. One of the force of employees at the Norfolk-Southern freight warehouse yesterday informed the reporter that freight traffic j ist at this time is unu sually large. ' This condition is doubt less due to the fact that many of the lo cal merchants are beginning to get in their stock of fall and aV'er goods. A few we.'ks from now it fi be much larger than at the present. Jessie Levingston, of Onslow county, who was convicted at theTaat term of the United States court on the charge of retailing and was sentenced to sixty days in jail and to pay a fine of 100 and costs, was released from custody yesterday morning by Commissioner C. B. Hill upon the defendant taking the insolvent debtor's oath in compliance with section 1,042 of the revised stat ues, ' . '-. : ; In Justice of the Peace S. R. Street's court yesterday morning Mr. J. J. Bax ter was awarded damages in the sum of $150 for a consignment of merchandise that was destroyed by fire when the Norfolk-Southern freight depot was de stroyed by fire last October. , The de fendaet company entered a denial of all charges and took an appeal. The plaintiff was represented by Mr, D. L. Ward. K Mr. J. S. Miller has located in front of his store on Middle Btreet a ball bear ing sewing machine wheel attached to a board that is affording the public con siderable entertainment. Painted on the board just above the wheel are the words "turn me," and all during the day and until late at night is this silent request complied with by the passerbys. With a strong turn the wheel will run for at least thirty minutes, and it is safe to say that it has been in almost continual motion since' it wai first put on exhibition. : . FAVOREDJAPAriESE Count Witte Thinks That Former ( President Worked Bluff ' ; ' oa Russia.; . St. Petersburg, July 17th!-Count Witte, the eminent Russian statesman, in a forthcoming pamphlet on his ver sion of the negqtiations for the treaty of peace between Russia and Japan, held at Portsmouth, will assail former ("President Roosevelt as siding with the Japanese in that memorable event. The Count says that at the first meeting of the conference in the United States the Japanese submitted their peace condi tions, twelve. in number, but that they were absolutely unacceptable. Ja par ticular he rejected the four 'final condi tionsthe Japanese demand for indem nity, limitation for Russia's maritime power in the Pacific the surrender bt Sagesaline and' the surrender of the Russian warships stationed. in neutral porta. This threw the negotiations in to a bad way, when President Roose velt prevailed upon the Japanese t submit their first eight points for dis cussion, when ended by an agreement being reached upon this much of the treaty. - , . As to the four remaining counts, the Japanese offered to give up the indem nity demand, limitation of power in the Pacific and 1 delivery of RnsBian war ships, but insisted of the cession of the southern part of Saghalien to Japan. This latter condition Count Witte re fused, and at the laat moment, when he was preparing to leave Portsmouth President Roosevelt, he says, sent u dispatch to the Czar, in which he open ly espoused the cause of Japan, declar ing that he considered the Japanese demands justified and right,' The Czar responded by saying that peace could only be concluded on the basis of the first eight points, already concurred in, Thereupon Mr. Roosevelt, Count Witte says, informed the Czar that 50,000,- 000 was deposited by Japan with a num ber of American banks, which would be available to continue the war. At this critical juncture Japan waived her de mands. Stockholders Meeting.
